Went 5-2-1 (including Top 8) at the CFB Game Center Game Day. Below is a tournament report:
Match 1
2-0 against Bant Company
The first game was pretty close until I slammed down a Chandra and wiped his board. Follow up appearances from World Breaker & Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger sealed the deal. A World Breaker chain got him in the next one.
Match 2
2-0 against Mono-U Brain in a Jar
This matchup is extremely favored for me because it is extremely hard for them to beat
Kozilek's Return
. Both games pretty much worked out that way, with Chandra and Return sealing the deal.
Match 3
2-0 against B/G Cryptocrats
Game 1 was a complete blowout in my favor. Having only 1 Zulaport Cutthroat made wiping the board easier to do. Game 2 was as close as they come. My opponent summoned the mighty Ormendal, Profane Prince, but with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger coming in next turn to exile the last 20 cards of his library (he had exactly 20), it was too late.
Match 4
2-1 against G/W Humans
My opponent fatally overextended in game 1, which allowed me to
Kozilek's Return
five creatures. In game 2, I drew poorly and was outraced. In game 3, I cut off my opponent's land supply with a World Breaker chain, sealing my 4th match win.
Match 5
0-2 against B/W Control
This matchup is miserable for ramp, so when I found out my opponent was on it, I knew I would be in for a hard time. What made things worse was that my draws were hideous, and I wonder whether good draws might have changed the outcome. This wasn't the worst case scenario, as I was able to draw my last round into top 8, coming in as the 6 seed.
Quarterfinals
2-0 against Bant Company
Once again I tromped a salty Bant Company player. I could hear the dismay in his voice as I slammed threat after threat. The real MVP in those games was
Jaddi Offshoot
, which helped keep me in the game until I could land those threats.
Semifinals
0-2 against B/W Control
I faced the boogyman again, and it was even uglier than before. Mulling to five in game 2 already down a game is a pretty bad feeling, but I stuck with it and tried to make the best of it.
Last Thoughts
Overall, I felt like my deck performed extremely well, and that my testing had paid off. It was obvious that most of the people that I played against were experienced players, which makes my finish even more surprising. All in all, a great day at the shop, and I hope that this success will continue to translate.
