Commander / EDH Casual Tribal UB (Dimir) Zombie

Every playgroup needs a zombie horde deck!

This is my current list for my Gisa and Geralf zombie tribal deck. It relies on the graveyard to recurr creatures with powerful ETB effects like Gray Merchant of Asphodel or get multiple death triggers from creatures like Vindictive Lich. The commander enables some amount of recursion as well as a handful of other cards like Havengul Lich or Ever After.

The goal of this deck is to overrun your enemies with a large army of large zombies and zombie tokens. A few zombie lords and Door of Destinies make your undead bigger. Diregraf Colossus and a recurrable Noosegraf Mob provide you with some tokens. With Kindred Discovery carddraw should also not be an issue.

If attacking does not suffice, the deck features some alternate win conditions. Frequently recurring Gray Merchant of Asphodel may already be enough to steal the game. If not, we have some infinite combos going on, all of which are centered around Rooftop Storm. While it is tempting, I would strongly discourage casting rooftop storm unless a) you need the card to survive or b) it is the last missing piece to a game-winning combo and you can win if you cast it. Otherwise players will quickly realize the thread this card poses.

Given you have Rooftop Storm in play, these potentially infinite combos are possible:

  1. Altar of Dementia + Gravecrawler - Seems pretty self explanatory. Sac the crawler to mill someone for its power, then cast it again for free from your graveyard and repeat the process. This is of course sped up by having some power-enhancing effect on the board. Be aware on any reshuffling Eldrazi like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre as they nullify this combo.

  2. Ashnod's Altar + Gray Merchant of Asphodel + Havengul Lich - This combo aims to drain the life out of every opponent. Sac Gary to the altar for , then use one mana to enable it to be cast from the graveyard with the lich, cast it and repeat the process. This combo can be altered by having any of the "drain-zombies" (Plague Belcher, Diregraf Captain, Vengeful Dead...) on board and use whatever zombie you like to be sacrificed(Vindictive Lich is a great choice).

  3. Kindred Discovery - Not really a combo on its own but rather an alteration or addition of the other combos. Let's say you have the first combo online but instead of Dementia you only have Ashnod's. You can repeat the above process as many times as you want and draw a card for every time you cast that crawler, ultimately getting you to your other altar with enough mana floating to do whatever you like. You may have found another win condition once you get to the altar, however...

That's it. While I dont like two-card infinite combos, I think these are fair 3-5 card combos that, if you get them online, have had enough build up time for your enemies to counteract or prepare for them. Sometimes it is better to quickly end a game and start the next one than to get frustrated over stalled boards.

Did I miss any combos? Although I played the Deck several times and had lots of fun with it there were still a few surprising interactions that I did not intend when I build it.

I am always looking for improvements for my decks, so if you have any suggestions let me know and I will be very happy. Feel free to check out my other decks.
