Chainer & Friends (Budget)

Commander / EDH Mono-Black

MULRAH

This entertaining budget deck stocks graveyards, providing Chainer, Dementia Master with plenty of targets. Sacrifice outlets allow you to get value if people try to wipe the board. Mortal Combat and Morality Shift provide some powerful combo potential, especially if Balthor the Defiled (who is currently beyond the budget of this deck) ever makes it in. Syr Konrad, the Grim is a strong alternate commander who can be absolutely devastating with all the movement of cards in and out of graveyards.

Updates Add

This deck was one of the first I put together, and I was relying on cards I had on hand. In addition, some cards were included just because I didn't have any better ideas. I'm not about to say the swaps I'm making here are brilliant additions, but hopefully they get the deck a little more tightly focused on its key themes.

First there's getting the "ramp" spells to actually ramp, even if only weakly:

  • Basal Thrull --> Millikin
  • Blood Pet --> Phyrexian Totem

Card draw could be more closely tied to the theme of getting creatures into the graveyard and then getting them back for {B}{B}{B} and 3 life.

  • Delirium Skeins --> Liliana's Standard Bearer
  • Bottomless Pit --> Triarch Praetorian
  • Mindless Automaton --> Hostile Negotiations

Sacrifice outlets need to be at instant speed and free, so you can bin your creatures instead of having them exiled when Chainer is removed:

  • The Eldest Reborn --> Woe Strider
  • Sadistic Hypnotist --> Vampire Warlord

I realized the suite of creatures that provided removal upon entering the battlefield was probably good enough to serve as the deck's removal suite. I made a couple tweaks here to ensure every card hit something upon entering the battlefield:

  • Prowling Pangolin --> Shadowborn Demon
  • Bane of the Living --> Nekrataal

Eliminating generic removal spells opened up room for an entirely new suite. Although common configurations of this deck don't include a lot of life gain, I felt like this could be something worth adding, given the cost of 3 life to use Chainer's ability. I went after creatures that could provide some life gain upon entering the battlefield, so they essentially cost only mana when brought back by Chainer. They have other functions as well, making this sort of a toolbox suite:

  • Ghastly Demise --> Serrated Scorpion
  • Liliana's Triumph --> Mire Triton
  • Reckless Spite --> Nocturnal Feeder
  • Sengir Autocrat --> Skemfar Shadowsage
  • Meteor Golem --> Noxious Gearhulk
  • Price of Fame --> Misfortune Teller
  • Force of Despair --> Windgrace Acolyte

Finally, there are a few cards I'll be sending to a budget Commander cube that I want to replace here. A few of those generic removal spells fit the bill, as do these:

  • Sisay's Ring --> Infernal Idol
  • Ransack the Lab --> Mindslicer
