I am getting pretty nervous about my ability to stop a flying deck...

May 17, 2012 12:21 a.m.

Luckily, other than Delver, there aren't really any pure flying decks in standard at the moment (though and Lingering SoulsMTG Card: Lingering Souls tokens fly, and those two cards constitute a sizable chunk of the meta game.

The best thing to do about a flying weakness in my opinion is Corrosive GaleMTG Card: Corrosive Gale. Two or three in the sideboard should do the trick.

I am thinking of swapping the increasing devotions for Timely ReinforcementsMTG Card: Timely Reinforcements. I am thinking of removing the law keepers and the trackers as well. But I am not sure what o replace them with. Angelic DestinyMTG Card: Angelic Destiny, Hero of BladeholdMTG Card: Hero of Bladehold, and Green Sun's Zenith MTG Card: Green Sun's Zenith all seem like they would do well here swords of winning and awesomeness and cavern of souls would be good too but their price tags are a bit steep... Not yet certain what else to change but i am definitely working on it.

If you can afford or Champion of Lambholt MTG Card: Champion of Lambholt is interesting. Sword of War and PeaceMTG Card: Sword of War and Peace is also a very, very powerful card for these kinds of decks. If you can get your hands on some copies I would definitely run them.

As for switching Increasing DevotionMTG Card: Increasing Devotion for Timely ReinforcementsMTG Card: Timely Reinforcements, the later can really screw you against control. It has no place in the mainboard. I will recommend Gather the TownsfolkMTG Card: Gather the Townsfolk, because it makes human tokens, snugly fits into your curve, and allows for powerful plays with Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish.

What about life gain? Is there any good cards that would fit for that? And what about the fact that many of these cards have a cmc 4 (way more than what I would swap out), should I swap out for some mana ramp like Avacyn's PilgrimMTG Card: Avacyn's Pilgrim or Birds of ParadiseMTG Card: Birds of Paradise?

What about Birthing PodMTG Card: Birthing Pods and some Strangleroot GeistMTG Card: Strangleroot Geists to tutor up some Champion of Lambholt MTG Card: Champion of Lambholt s?

put champion of the parish and avacyn pilgrim to 4 of's and then add in some fiend hunters for control, maybe 4 depending on how bad you need to get rid of their creatures. look at mine if you want block constructed w/g

Angelic WallMTG Card: Angelic Wall doesn't look like it's where you want to be, it does nothing in standard, I'd suggest cutting those.

Also, running 4 Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish makes it more likely that you'll get it out on turn 1, you might want to do that, and Gather the TownsfolkMTG Card: Gather the Townsfolk looks like it could do awesome things for you, I'd run 4 of that as well.

If you need to keep off opponents' creatures, Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter is nice, and Thalia, Guardian of ThrabenMTG Card: Thalia, Guardian of Thraben does nice things against other decks, and blocks many things.

It might not even be entirely wrong to have Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgment or TerminusMTG Card: Terminus in the sideboard.

The angelic walls were champ last night, protecting me from both flying spirits and Stromkirk NobleMTG Card: Stromkirk Nobles with an Angel of JubilationMTG Card: Angel of Jubilation out they don't even die to thunderbolts...

May 19, 2012 9:28 p.m.

Yes, if you play the 4cmc angel in addition to the puny wall he becomes invulnerable to... the all powerful (until they get a sword on it), flying tokens (until they get a sword on it), and Stromkirk NobleMTG Card: Stromkirk Nobles, but it doesn't even kill them in return. Listen to Fibbe's advice. This card has no place in your deck.

Instead, you want cards that keep the pressure on the opponents and hope that you put them on the defensive. All of Fibbe's comment is spot on when it comes to this. I can't stress enough how powerful Thalia, Guardian of ThrabenMTG Card: Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter are when forcing your opponent on the defensive, especially Thalia.

Also, about your question concerning life gain. This is another Angelic WallMTG Card: Angelic Wall situation. Life gain is irrelevant because [i]it's not going to win you the game[i]. I know this feels like saying Doom BladeMTG Card: Doom Blade is irrelevant or Birds of ParadiseMTG Card: Birds of Paradise is irrelevant, because they don't win the game, but in reality that's not always true; sometimes killing that creature or that extra mana [i]does[i] win you the game. Life gain never does this. At best, it only prolongs loss. The only exception to this is with cards like Felidar SovereignMTG Card: Felidar Sovereign, that make it so life gain can win you the game. Unfortunately, none of these cards are in standard.

I think you already decided against the Birthing PodMTG Card: Birthing Pod plan. Just in case you haven't, it is a very bad idea. Birthing PodMTG Card: Birthing Pod is not a card you throw into a deck to tutor for a creature. It is a deck that warrants a whole deck built around it, and it would simply make your play clunky.

As it is, your deck is not running the most powerful cards it could be. That is, your card choice is not optimized. This is evident in the fact that you play cards like Angel of JubilationMTG Card: Angel of Jubilation, Angelic WallMTG Card: Angelic Wall and Elspeth TirelMTG Card: Elspeth Tirel. I will repeat what Fibbe said and suggest a fourth Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish and, once again, Gather the TownsfolkMTG Card: Gather the Townsfolk. The interaction with this card, the champions, and even just a sword is awesome.

tl;dr: -4 Angel of JubilationMTG Card: Angel of Jubilation, -3 Angelic WallMTG Card: Angelic Wall, -3 Elspeth TirelMTG Card: Elspeth Tirel, +4 Gather the TownsfolkMTG Card: Gather the Townsfolk, +1 Champion of the ParishMTG Card: Champion of the Parish, +3 Thalia, Guardian of ThrabenMTG Card: Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, +2 Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter.

Would 3 Grand AbolisherMTG Card: Grand Abolishers be better than the 3 Thalia, Guardian of ThrabenMTG Card: Thalia, Guardian of Thrabens?

May 21, 2012 2:52 a.m.

No. Every deck casts non-creature spells while not every deck is casting a lot of instants. , so you can have something to dodge board wipes mainboard. He may not be amazing when he's transformed, but he can still hold a sword.

Also, the all non-creature sideboard could be a problem (unless you board out thalia, which I can't really see doing except against maybe zombies and the mirror). Try replacing NaturalizeMTG Card: Naturalize with Leonin Relic-WarderMTG Card: Leonin Relic-Warder and Wild DefianceMTG Card: Wild Defiance with Faith's ShieldMTG Card: Faith's Shield (still a non-creature, but its only 1 cost, 2 with thalia, rather than the potential 4 for wild defiance). Last note about the sideboard: drop an Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring for a Ratchet BombMTG Card: Ratchet Bomb. The bomb is great against tokens.

One final note, very nice play-by-play! It was concise and informative, and let me get a feel for your meta (2 red decks and only one control! What!). Though we only saw three decks, so I suppose that isn't definitive evidence. I'm sorry to hear that your record was 0-4, but with the new tweaks I'm sure you'll be much better positioned for the next FNM.

I was looking at some similarly thought out decks an I was wondering what you guys think of Revenge of the Hunted MTG Card: Revenge of the Hunted as a kind of removal/buff. It could be used to make all of my creatures unblockable if played on Champion of Lambholt MTG Card: Champion of Lambholt or if she isn't out yet played on a a bigger or double striking creature (thank you Silverblade PaladinMTG Card: Silverblade Paladin and could wipe the other side of the board of a decent sized chunk of it's chump blockers and tokens.

May 22, 2012 10:32 a.m.

I think Revenge of the Hunted MTG Card: Revenge of the Hunted definitely has some potential. The main thing that turns me off about it is the 6 CC. In a deck that doesn't manipulate variance to get miracles as much as possible, you're basically only ever going to cast it for 6. Right off the bat, I feel like it's too pricey for a deck like yours that is trying to get out quick (also, with thalia, it can potentially cost 7). If all of this doesn't dissuade you from using the card, then I would test it. Maybe in the side board. A good testing session can be more helpful than advice from others, sometimes.

Added 2x Gavony Township s for times when my mana isn't doing anything and it is always good for a little extra buff with the token creatures. I only put in 2 to avoid messing with my mana curve. I am considering swapping some Birds of Paradise in, but am it certain what to remove for them to go in.

Swapped a Champion of the Parish and a Gather the Townsfolk out for the 2 more fiend hunters. Then I swapped 3 card:Green Sun's Zenith for 3 card:Faith's Shield. Lastly I am testing a swap out of Revenge of the Hunted instead of Gather the Townsfolk as a versatile win condition.

Check out my deck You No Block (Please Comment)

I'm doing the same thing but mono green. I might change to G/W though. I would use Champion of the Parish though.

I am really dying to make this competetive. Get back to me and let's put our heads together on this please.
