Chromium, the Mutable: Barren Glory B100 EDH

Commander / EDH WUB (Esper)

Hiyodori

Chromium, the Mutable

I NEED AROUND 10 OR SO CARDS TO COMPLETE THE DECK. I ALSO MIGHT MAKE A FEW CUTS HERE AND THERE. PLEASE READ THE PRIMARY STRATEGY AND IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS, THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

B100 EDH RULES:

Here follows the three comprehensive rules that define the format:

  • $100 Budget: The complete cost of the deck must be below $100 for the TCG Player Avg price. This is where the B100 comes from for those that are curious. This value is calculated on the left side of this page. The correct value is the lesser of the 2 values, as this is the price using the cheapest versions available. The cost of the general is included and basic lands do not add to the total cost.
  • Commander Cost Limit: The cost of the commander cannot exceed $10 utilizing the TCG Player Avg price. This is to avoid decks that abuse overly powerful commanders.
  • Additional Banlist: This is an optional list of cards that outclass other cards by such a large margin and generally don't add anything to the game in terms of interesting gameplay.

DECK STRATEGY:

The primary focus of this deck are as follows:

  • Barren Glory: This decks primary win condition is Barren Glory. It's constructed in a way that it can disassemble itself at instant speed. This includes losing all non-land permanents, lands, and cards in hand. The following sections will cover how this will be achieved efficiently.
  • Non-Land Disassembly: This deck is intended to only contain non-land permanents that will have the ability to either sacrifice themselves, fall off other permanents they are attached to, or return to the hand at instant speed. This part is 1/3 of the battle to successfully triggering Barren Glory. Here are a few examples of some non-land permanents found within.
  • Land Disassembly: While sacrificing all your lands at instant speed isn't difficult to achieve, instantly losing all of your lands without leaving a permanent behind is. While one of the next options does leave behind a 5/5 Demon, I will explain how I plan on getting rid of that in a later section. Here are the 6 cards in the deck that can instantly sacrifice your lands without leaving a trace.
  • Hand Disassembly: Discarding your hand is done primarily by using the commanders' discard activated ability. Since Chromium, the Mutable has flash and cannot be countered, this is almost a guaranteed discard outlet. However, there are a few other cards that can assist in discarding as well in the event your hand isn't too large.
  • Killing Chromium: Unless you get lucky and am able to have Barren Glory trigger without the aid of Chromium's discard ability, then you will have to dispatch Chromium, the Mutable as well. The deck currently contains six 1~2 CMC instant speed removal along with four lands that can rid yourself of Chromium. Of course, if you somehow generate lots of mana with various spells and abilities in the deck, you could use one of the higher mana board wipes as well. However, I will not include those below.
  • Killing Urami: In rare cases, you might need to utilize what I would consider the backup plan to sacrifice all your lands. While Tomb of Urami is great at making you lose your lands, you have a big problem on your hands: Urami, a legendary 5/5 black Demon Spirit creature token with flying. This doesn't bode well for your Barren Glory plans. On top of that, unless you were fortunate with your hand and didn't require discard ability, you now also have him. Luckily, all of the instants above are able to target both of them. Just know that lands will be unable to take out Urami, so definitely have an instant in hand for him. As I said, this is a backup plan in case you have no other ways to sacrifice your lands. It is harder to pull off because it will require two methods of making creatures disappear. I will list the board wraths here because you could use one of those as long as you are able to cast it at instant speed to take out both.
  • Instant Barren Glory: So how do you cast your Barren Glory at instant speed? You will need to fetch up Emergence Zone to be able to cast it so you do not forecast to the table that you are ready to win. You can also cast your commander before your turn and then cast Karn's Temporal Sundering. After that, you would need another 6 mana for Barren Glory and likely around 1 to 2 more mana to kill off Chromium. This isn't impossible in this deck, but Emergence Zone should be your first choice. The deck contains 5 different tutors along with a high amount of card draw to obtain the Emergence Zone and Barren Glory together. Here are the tutors.
  • Costly Mana: The final turn of playing Barren Glory will undoubtedly require a hefty amount of mana. Fortunately, this deck has multiple sources that can sacrifice themselves for extra mana. Here are some examples.
  • Hail Mary: Hopefully, the strategic goal of the deck is clear, win by solely possessing Barren Glory. If that doesn't work, a last-ditch effort with commander damage and few lands that produce creatures are your only chances at victory. Here are a few of the lands that you could activate for lethal combat damage.

FEATURED CARD

Stormwatch Eagle

Here are three strengths of the featured card:

  • Free Land Sacrifice: As stated before, finding a land sacrifice option that doesn't leave a trace behind is a difficult task. IF you find others, please put them in the comments section! Anyways, here a few of the other good land sacrifice options that only had the problem of leaving themselves behind.
  • Rare Usage: I found this card edhrec.com and it was only used in 2 decks out of every EDH deck listed on there! Also, both of those decks' purpose was to utilize "jank" cards without a serious attempt to be victorious. I decided to challenge myself and design a deck that would optimally use it. I finally came upon using the downside of sacrificing a land for its' activated ability to be the best chance at creating a deck concept. Finally, I came across the card Barren Glory and things came together from there. Perhaps not as bad as Stormwatch Eagle, but here a few cards that you could try and design a functional deck around. Good luck!
  • Artwork: Luckily, the artwork by Aaron Boyd is much better than the card itself. Even though he hasn't been the artist for many Magic the Gathering cards, he does have a few other renditions.
