Modern GW Vizier Elves Primer

Elves have been a fringe deck in modern for a long time. When Glimpse of Nature and Green Sun's Zenith were legal, they were a top-tier strategy, but post bannings they died off almost completely. However, the deck started to make a return in Dragons of Tarkir with the printing of Collected Company, and as of Amonkhet we can now run the infinite mana combo of Devoted Druid + Vizier of Remedies and win with Ezuri, Renegade Leader. In this primer, I hope to explain my choices and help you make your own modern elves deck.

4x Devoted Druid

The card that makes the combo work. Makes infinite mana with Vizier of Remedies, and also makes infinite mana with a second Druid and an Ezuri, Renegade Leader.

1x Vizier of Remedies

This guy was printed and single handedly boosted elves up by at least one, possibly two tiers. She's very bad on her own, which is why she's a one-of, but she goes infinite with Devoted Druid, which gives you a turn 3 kill. Other then that, she doesn't do much, although you should remember that she can be a silver bullet.

4x Collected Company

For a long time, this was the deck's namesake card. There's no doubt that elves would not be a deck - it gives you 6 (or, most commonly in this deck, 5) mana worth of creatures, split among 2 cards, at instant speed, often on turn 2 or 3. It's an auto include in any elves deck.

4x Chord of Calling

Another very powerful green instant. Chord gives your combo more consistency, synergises with Nettle Sentinel, and allows you to run a toolbox of cards, both in the maindeck and sideboard. Another auto include, although there is an argument for having it as a 3-of.

4x Elvish Visionary

Now we get to the most controversial decision in the deck. Not whether to run Visionary - this is agreed on, it deserves a place - but whether to have it be a 4-of. It competes with Dwynen's Elite for space. I think that Visionary is better in the current metagame, because there are a lot of tier one decks that Elite is bad against, like Storm, Jeskai Tempo, Eldrazi Tron, and Affinity. On the other hand, Visionary is never completely dead, so I like it better

2x Dwynen's Elite

This was talked about above. It's very good against decks that go big.

4x Elvish Archdruid

The deck's only true Lord. It's amazing with Ezuri, Renegade Leader and allows us to essentially play our 1 mana elves for free.

4x Elvish Mystic/4x Llanowar Elves

Without these, the deck wouldn't work. It relies too much on Dwynen's Elite and Nettle Sentinel for Heritage Druid to work, it can't cast a turn 2 Elvish Archdruid or Ezuri, Renegade Leader nearly as often, and it gets much slower. (It could run Arbor Elf, but that card doesn't always tap for mana, so it can be a bit awkward.)

4x Heritage Druid

This card is playable in legacy, and basically got Glimpse of Nature banned. It allows you to play your entire hand on turn 2. It synergizes with Nettle Sentinel and Dwynen's Elite, as well as any other one drop elves. Never run less than 4.

4x Nettle Sentinel

This is a synergy card. It helps you when you have Heritage Druid or Chord of Calling. It also gives the deck an aggro draw, though. I wouldn't run less than 3 personally.

6x Forest

Basics are good in modern because of the prevalence of Path to Exile, Ghost Quarter and Blood Moon.

4x Razorverge Thicket

The deck doesn't want lands beyond turn two or three, so fast lands are very good.

4x Windswept Heath

These help you get your Temple Gardens and also thin your deck for when you cast Collected Company.

2x Temple Garden

The shock lands for this color combination.

1x Westvale Abbey

This card is mostly as a win condition and protection from boardwipes.

1x Selfless Spirit

A flex slot between this, Reclamation Sage, Eternal Witness and another Dwynen's Elite.

3x Ezuri, Renegade Leader

The main Win Con of the deck, he overruns your elves and allows you to deal over 500 damage as early as turn 4.
