The reason forCharmbreaker Devils is because I like to use cards that are used often so I want to keep him in there.

Have you considered Pyromancer Ascension ? Because you have four of every instant or sorcery. Even tho the copy does not trigger nor Talrand, Sky Summoner , nor Guttersnipe

Anyway, cool deck +1

@lofecka Yah that's a good idea. I'm not sure how it would do in this deck but I will give it some consideration.

Why not a full 4 Steam Vents ? They're only going to go up now that they're going out of print, so you should get them while they're affordable.

I know you really like Runechanter's Pike but I feel that the Spellheart Chimera should be enough to ride to victory -- however, he's very vulnerable, particularly to Lightning Bolt and Lightning Helix . I know you have Vapor Snag to save him but I feel that you need more counter-magic to make sure he survives. I would remove the pikes in favor for Deprive and or Spell Pierce . You may be able to remove 1 of your removal spells as well in favor for more counter-magic. You can also try Mizzium Skin as a 1-of.

Good luck! +1 for using Spellheart Chimera. I love him and always wanted someone to make him work!

@Grimgrinner - Sadly that would go past my budget.. I would run 4 if I could afford 4.

@tchau204 - I really feel like you're right with the pike.. I will play around with more counter spells and such! Thanks!!

The nice thing about modern is that it's a format you play long-term. If you enjoy brewing decks, It's highly advisable to pick up as many shocklands as you can get your hands on. even if it goes over your budget, you can get 1 Steam Vents today, and another 3 weeks from now. It also really makes those Sulfur Falls shine.

I would say overall that in your SB, Clout of the Dominus is probably weakest. btw. Probably want to side in some Torpor Orb to hose pod and twin.

Blood Moon is a fantastic sideboard option too, that doesn't completely screw you over.

another good SB is Combust .

Love the deck description and the song btw.

@Grimgrinner - I see what you're saying about long-term. I will add in the extra steam vents. I will see about my sideboard too. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I do love when people try to build different decks, instead of playing a deck that everyone plays. +1 :)

Love that you included Chandra, Pyromaster . As you know, she's a favourite of mine, and can really help you trigger Young Pyromancer ability. Speaking of Pyromancer, I love to see that you use it as one of your win cons instead of Delver of Secrets  Flip . IMO, he's really better than Delver. Also glad to see you using Spellheart Chimera , which I think is one of the most underrated creatures in Modern. Fits this deck perfectly. The same goes for Deprive when it comes to counterspells :)

OTOH, I know that you're trying to keep this deck on a budget, but if you can put your hands on a couple of Snapcaster Mage , go for them. They can really help you boosting the number of Pyromancer tokens on the battlefield.

Once again, really nice build.

Thank you :D

As for Snapcaster Mage .....
I am going to build what I have right here first. I only need a few Deprive and the Chandras. After a while if it satisfies me I will probably slowly buy me some Snapcaster Mage s just because they are so good.

They are, indeed. But I think you don't need the full playset. I think 2 are enough ;)

Btw, how's using the Chimera? Can easily grow to 6/3, right?

July 22, 2014 3:59 p.m.

Nef says... #12

Haha yeah I will probably end up trying to get 2 if I can.

Chandra is super fun and awesome :3 As for the chimera...yeah he gets quite big. At least a 5/3 most of the times.
I just added a Ral Zarek to see how that went... I like his +1 as I can tap one of their lands and assure they can't counter a spell or something like that. He also has burning capabilities.

I didn't really like Ral Zarek ....
I added a couple of Think Twice instead.

@Walrusyn - After tons of playtesting I've decided to keep Chandra, Pyromaster !
I have also considered Chandra, the Firebrand . What are your thoughts?

August 6, 2014 11:57 a.m.

Walrusyn says... #15

Glad you liked Pyromaster :) I think Firebrand is not as good as Pyromaster. Her -2 ability his good but not awesome. It would be awesome in your deck if she entered the battlefield with 4 loyalty counters and the second ability was just -1.

But nothing as play testing her :)

I like how the list looks! I feel like you need a few more Mana Leak and or Remand though, to handle to number of threats you normally aren't able to. Chandra, Pyromaster is awesome, but using it's +0 ability with the counter-spells in your deck is anti-synergistic. Hmm.. would Chandra, the Firebrand be better here? Doubling up a Lightning Bolt or Electrolyze could be pretty good once in awhile.

Nef says... #17

Yah I felt the same way.
It seems good on paper, but the odds of her actually being helpful are low.

@tchau204 - I have Deprive as well. And if a creature is a big I can Unsummon it when i have a counter spell in hand.
As for the pyromaster, even if I exile a counter spell, I can use it on my turn in case they try countering a spell of my own. Or it can stop a threat.

tchau204 says... #19

@Nefferean that's true, it's not bad. I'm just use to seeing it's +0 effect netting +1 card advantage every time when used in Jund.

August 6, 2014 1:28 p.m.

Nef says... #20

Even if it doesn't get card advantage, it helps deck thin.

August 6, 2014 2:04 p.m.

tchau204 says... #21

That's optimistic.. but you also have to consider that on turn 5+, that Deprive will probably help you close out the game; you'd rather draw it the next turn T_T

August 6, 2014 2:56 p.m.

Nef says... #22

There's also tooons of card draw anyway. The odds are slim. It's advantages weigh out its disadvantages in my opinion.

August 6, 2014 3:26 p.m.

tchau204 says... #23

Okay :)

August 6, 2014 3:33 p.m.

Grimgrinner says... #24

If you're planning on using Unsummon offensively, why not try out Vapor Snag to really help push that early game tempo? Also have you been able to playtest this deck much? Are you winning with it?

August 6, 2014 8:19 p.m.

Nef says... #25

@Grimgrinner - I used to have Vapor Snag but I found that sometimes I wanted to bounce my own creatures as well.
I have playtested without the expensive lands and w/o Deprive and it wins most the time versus my friends. I'm waiting to get the whole list before I take it to a tournament of some sort. I've playtested it on tappedout but for some reason tappedout hates me and i consistently get 6 land opening hands, then mulligan into no lands.. so I need to wait 'til i own the whole deck to really see if it needs tweaks.
