Went 2-1 in this pod. I stomped on people generally. I lost one round to Revenge of Ravens that allowed a food deck to go haywire, forgetting to sideboard in Return To Nature. If I had not resigned I may have been able to get my sundering stroke going, but it would have taken forever.
Anyway, I killed it this draft. There were a couple of factors:
I did not commit to a color til pick 5. Why? Because after three picks, people will have picked over the bombs. I was basically passed a pack with mostly red cards, and I started leaning super heavily into red. I didn't know my second color until pack two. When I was passed a wicked wolf (was the person to my left on drugs?), I just went all in on green. I somehow got a Beanstalk Giant, and the rest is history.
During construction, I prioritized curve over everything else. "Good cards" are no good if they are sitting in your hand unplayable because you didn't hit your curve.
I never even got to play Sundering Stroke or Irencrag Feat with my Torbran. I think I got Torbran out once.
I prioritized removal. An early Joust paid off big time. Especially Joust on Redcap Raiders.
Removal:
- Joust
- Outmuscle
- Fell the Pheasant
- Sundering Stroke
- Scorching Dragonfire
- Wicked Wolf
Quasi-Combat Tricks:
- Joust + Outmuscle (again)
- Barge In (super important to this deck)
- Ferocity of the Wilds (all my non humans get +1 AND trample? sign me up)
Overperforming:
- Rampart Smasher
- Beanstalk Giant
- Raging Redcap (with equipment or Joust this card is busted, with trample from Ferocity of the Wilds it's even more busted)
Combos I wish came together:
- Torbran + Irencrag + Sundering Stroke for 9 damage to three targets. Unfortunately never came together.
- Torbran + Trebuchet
- Torbran + Anything
(every halfway decent draft deck has an annoying flier worth removing, that's why I tend to maindeck one Fell the Pheasant)
