Company of Knights Upgrade Guide

Standard Knights RW (Boros)

This is my upgrade guide for the MTG Arena Boros (red-white) Starter Deck - Company of Knights. It is a Knight-Tribal focused deck with a small amount of equipment synergy mixed in. This guide will show you some reasonable budget upgrades during Zendikar Rising Standard. REMINDER - You MUST have already unlocked all of the dual-colored starter decks to make this one.

The original deck has a lot of Knight tribal,

1x Inspiring Veteran, (in) - 2x Youthful Knight, 1x Dub, 1x Haktos the Unscarred (out)

Inspiring Veteran is probably one of the best Knight tribal cards in standard at the moment. It is literally one of the best knights in the deck. Rimrock Knight is a decent card, and Basri's Solidarity is great. Here, Youthful Knight is not very strong without any buffs, Dub is quite pointless (deck wants Equipment), and Haktos the Unscarred is not a Knight, however good he is.

2x Venerable Knight (in) - 2x Basri's Acolyte (out)

Venerable Knight is an amazing one-drop in any white deck, and even more so in Knights. Basri's Acolyte is just too clunky, and does not have any real Knight synergy.

2x Worthy Knight (in) - 1x Grasping Giant, 1x Infuriate

Worthy Knight is one of the best rares for Knight tribal in standard. It has Knight synergy, and it creates a bunch of chump blockers. Grasping Giant is good, but not the best for this deck. Infuriate isn't bad in mono red, but it doesn't really have a spot here.

1x Acclaimed Contender (in) - 1x Infuriate

Acclaimed Contender is a great card in this deck. A 3/3 for 3 that finds us a Knight or Equipment is great to fetch a Knight, or perhaps an Embercleave.

2x Fervent Champion (in) - 2x Weaselback Redcap

Fervent Champion is, in many ways, a better Weaselback Redcap. It helps Knights, it likes equipment, and it likes to swing in on turn 1.

2x Kabira Takedown   (in) - 2x Pacifism (out)

Kabira Takedown   is one of the new modal double-faced cards from Zendikar Rising. It can be a land, or it can be handy removal, considering the amount of creatures in this deck.

1x Embercleave - 1x Short Sword

Embercleave is busted. It is OP.

1x Maul of the Skyclaves - 1x Short Sword

Maul of the Skyclaves is a great, efficient equipment for this deck. It provides easy evasion and a hard-hitting creature the turn you cast it, because it equips when it enters the battlefield!

1x Shatterskull Smashing  , 2x Scorching Dragonfire (in) - 3x Tempered Veteran (out)

Shatterskull Smashing   is a great card, perfect for large-scale removal. Scorching Dragonfire is some of the best red removal in standard right now. Tempered Veteran just does not do anything in this deck without counter synergy, so it is out.

2x Needleverge Pathway   (in) - 1x Mountain, 1x Plains (out)

All dual-colored decks need their dual lands to have a consistent mana base. This pathway is another modal double-faced card, which you can play either as a white source or a red source.

Well, those are all of the upgrades for this deck. Knights is a strong tribe, and this deck will show that. The final wildcard count for the upgrades is 2 Mythic, 8 Rare, 8 Uncommon, and 2 Common. I plan to make this a series for the rest of the dual-colored decks, so stay tuned!

(Some more upgrades for more skilled players are in the maybeboard section. More skilled players can, based on their experience, make substitutions based on what they have experienced in games. Beginners, once you have collected more cards on Arena and played enough games, you can look at the suggested maybeboard cards and make some deckbuilding decisions.)
