Maybeboard

03-21-2022 - Major edits. Finally updating this with the non-budget what I'm playing today.

The title says it all...

Mono-black mid range devotion. Recent overhauls: Added Dauthi Voidwalker, Champion of the Perished, and everyone's favorite non-bo Chalice of the Void.

The curve seems okay, though its likely too slow for a truly competitive meta, it will be possibly fine for FNM.

Tech:

Gray Merchant of Asphodel is the central win-con. Usually when he is drawn there is a enough devotion on the board to permanently influence the outcome of the game.

Phyrexian Oblitierator - Best wall ever. And that's what he is here. A big ugly wall. Adds 4 devotion for Gary and allows me to pick away with the rest of the armies:

Much of the rest of the deck has shifted a lot lately. I'll be updating over the coming days as time allows.

Remembering the fallen:

Arena is gone now. So sad. It was tons of fun for casual play.

Oona's Prowler - I'm still tossing around an idea that uses her, Vampire Nighthawk, and Herald of Torment as a focus on areal assault. But for now she doesn't make the cut.

Nantuko Shade - Great when it worked, but most of the time just a dud. Since I dropped the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx mana approach it needed to go too.

Guul Draz Assassin - He has his home, but I shifted to a more aggro and less control strategy. He went by the wayside with the shift.

Sideboard Notes - This is not a helpful section at this point. These card notes are like 6 years out of date. Once I can actually play this deck on paper and get more reps in I'll update it, but sadly there's just not a lot of modern in my area lately.

Drown in Sorrow - Mostly a place holder until more research is done.

Surgical Extraction - Necessity. Especially against... a lot of things. Tokens is a big one in my meta right now. 3-of for positive penetration.

Pithing Needle - Just wonderful. Kills annoying things like Cranial Plating before they land. 3-of

Damping Matrix - I'm on the fence about this one.

Bile Blight - Because I hate affinity. And Merfolk. And like removal. Great against all kinds of things that I see regularly.

Played at the Saturday morning competitive modern. MUs were Boros aggro, Living End, and Slivers. I was plagued by mis-plays, including 2 major ones each of which costed me the game and the round. I haven't played competitively.... ever... so this was a big time learning experience for me. Details below.

Round 1

1-2 Boros aggro was tight, and I didn't track the life totals properly and lost on my error. It was too late to go back by the time I remembered. I won game 1, should have won game 2, and lost game 3.

Round 2

2-0 Slivers. The guys I was playing against just threw something together that morning. It played a lot like the Slivers deck put out by Wizards: great for casual, not great for competitive. The two games were almost no contest. Everything he landed died to some removal (Gatekeeper of Malakirfoil, Victim of Night, or Liliana of the Veil) and I just walked on by.

Round 3

1-2 Living End. First time I'd ever seen this deck really other than glancing at a deck list. Interesting idea. Game 1 I got stomped. Game 2 I sideboarded Chalice of the Void (played on 0), Pithing Needle, and Surgical Extraction. Was lucky in the first draw and got a Thoughtseize and Surgical Extraction, pulled the Fulminator Mage to get me off the ground, and dropped Chalice of the Void all in turn 1. After that he just waited to die. Game 3 I misplayed because I don't speak Italian well enough and I misunderstood what the Cascade mechanic actually did. I got him to 2 life, then Inquisition of Kozileked the wrong card from his hand. He cascaded into Living End and I lost. What a silly way to go after a strong start.

Round 4 - Bye.

Overall it went pretty well. Arena is too much of a cute trick rather than an effective play, so its gone now. Also, there's not enough recursion for the sake of Liliana of the Veil, and my curve was too high. I dropped the Demigod of Revenge and added 4x Bloodsoaked Champion to hopefully help with that. The 1-drop spot may not be perfect now, but time will tell. Taking a break from this deck for a couple weeks to try out my others, but I'll keep you posted after I keep the meta guessing.
