I used your deck as a solid starting point for my deck and I ran Bojuka Bog for graveyard hate along with Leyline of the Void sideboarded. I mainly use bojuka bog as a free graveyard exile with the ability to give me swamp mana if needed. I've had decent experiences with it. What are your thoughts on Bojuka Bog ?

Also my work around for Leyline of Sanctity and company is Void Snare into either Thoughtseize or Thought Erasure .

I am persuaded you don't want etb tapped land except for Shelldock Isle wich is great. Void Snare is a solid option against a lot of Leyline of Sanctity decks. Nonetheless, it is a much worse card than any other popular sideboard card to the extent that I rarely end up including it in my 75s. Finally, I am against needing to put together multiple cards in order to have a chance against Leyline of Sanctity .

I gotcha. I see your point about using several cards to fight off one card. Since I dont run Visions of Beyond I can just incorporate 4 Void Snare easily into my deck. I'm in the process of tweaking my deck hopefully I will be ready to post it in the next day or so and I'd like to see your opinion about it.

I played a Dimir Mill Deck at 4 different Modern Friday Night Magic events at 4 different game stores, in 4 different states. I could do no better than 2-2 with Mill.

I have played with every card in your list at some point or another.

Here are some general thoughts:

Darkness is cute, but it is only single use and once you surprise them with it once and do not win a turn later, then that is all.

Mesmeric Orb is overrated. It doesn't move fast enough, I'd rather have Mission Briefing or Snapcaster Mage to recur spells in the 2 drop slot.

Archive Trap is your most valuable mill card. The ability to force a search with Field of Ruin or play it for free is killer. If you can run 4x copies of Trapmaker's Snare , you can load up for T3 and T4 blowouts, especially if you have Fraying Sanity down or copies of Archive trap in hand. This is another reason to run Mission Briefing .

If you run Trapmaker's Snare, you can use Mindbreak Trap in your sideboard, 1 copy, to shut down storm. Also Ravenous Trap can be your graveyard removal spell of choice.

Since my Friday Night Magic tour, some interesting spells have appeared for Mill. Drown in the Loch and the new Ashiok come to mind. I have yet to test the deck with these pieces.

I don't understand how those statements should concern this page. Having played with every card in my list at some point or another doesn't mean you tried out my list. Also I discussed extensively the cards you talk about.

What actions do you take when someone has Leyline of Sanctity in opening hand. I see you have set Set Adrift but the mana cost is high and the only other way is to Mesmeric Orb on yourself. And you are down at least 3 turns. Or do you just forfeit that game

Hedron Crab and Mesmeric Orb are both great with Set Adrift . It is usually effective enough to win the game if your opponent is slower than you or soft to mill anyway.

First of all, thank you for this guide. I've been checking it on and off for at least a year and I'm finally starting to delve into "proper" mill myself, a strategy I've love for years.

I have to ask, what is the reasoning behind not including Scheming Symmetry ? I've seen some decks hitting top 8 in MTGO with it alongside Drown in the Loch and Jace's Phantasm , so as to delay the game and get solid hits with Archive.

How would you handle a deck like CrabVine or maybe a mirror match?

I can see Shelldock Isle being particularly deadly if it has an Archive Trap stored as a powerful finish to an opponent, especially if you have a Breaking or better in your hand. If you can force your opponent to search their library, then other mill cards should damage them beyond recovery. As for stuff like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, as long as you can reliably exile them while they're in the library, they're harmless, as very few cards can recover cards that were exiled by other things. Any Emrakuls in an opponent's hand are much easier to deal with, as more cards exist that can deal with those.

Here is my take on modern mill for the tier 1 spot I call it (GoFetch).

Bruvac the Grandiloquent was introduced in Jumpstart. Would it be a worthwile addition to this deck?

aquacode says... #15

ncusafguy the problem is he essentially fulfills the same role as fraying sanity, but he is much easier to remove, being a creature. I would say probably not.

With the new spoilers of Zendikar Rising, Ruin Crab was reveiled.

As Hedron Crab was the strongest card in The deck, would you consider to use any Ruin Crabs in the main deck? I am having great fun with your instructions, thanks a lot for your post.

September 1, 2020 1:13 p.m.

ncusafguy : Bruvac the Grandiloquent is not Modern-legal.

I am also curious to see what impact Ruin Crabs will have on the main deck. It will also be a better blocker with its 3 toughness (rather than 2).

Moreover, Ruin Crabs will be strictly better than Hedron Crabs in multiplayer formats such as EDH or Oathbreaker, as it affects each opponent rather than a target player.

The next top mill deck for modern is Go Fetch!

https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/go-fetch-zendikar-rising-update/#c3665562

It’s super anti-meta and does not hit lightly no weak mill 3 here and mesmeric orb is Way too slow. Plus the crab strategy isn’t good anymore. You should run stuff to make them search. instead of relying on them to for your archive traps.

I love all the insight and ideas but the only thing I disagree with is playing Mill in modern. As of now mill has had a lot of updates and upgrades and now is able to start winning and being effective as long as you play it as a control/mill. It might not be the go to deck out there but it definitely is a threat in modern now and it will keep getting better!

What do you think about swans of bryn argoll? I feel like it can act as a good way to get around strategies that counter cards getting put into the graveyard by making the person instead draw them.
