As you know, the strategy of this deck is not to attack life points of our opponent, we attack the DECK of our opponent: our objective is to put all the cards of our opponent's deck in his graveyard.
How do we do this?
In fact, we are very similar to the classic mono red burn deck, but instead of LP we attack the deck: so if a burn has Lightning Bolt, we have Glimpse the Unthinkable, if a burn has Goblin Guide, we have Ruin Crab etc.
The problem that we have, is that, unlike burn, we have no defenses and no offensive creatures. We can just defend ourselves while milling our opponent.
This is not an advantage for sure, but some decks, like death shadow, tends to auto “inflict damage”, so we can surprise them with unexpected cards, like for example flashing in a Thieves' Guild Enforcer when our opponent is low on life points after he attaks, and finish him with her. Though we have not a lot of offensive options, we can eaisly defend ourselves with lots of removal like drown the loch or Fatal Push, mass removal like card:bontu's last rekoning and Damnation, gain life with Profane Memento, Cling to Dust or Crypt Incursion (A TON OF LIFE), we can destroy annoying lands with Field of Ruin that is very useful to proc Fatal Push, Hedron Crab and Ruin Crab landfall ability, and sinergize perfectly with Archive Trap. We can stall the game with Ensnaring Bridge, slow down our oppo with Mesmeric Orb; we can destroy our opponent strategy with a good placed Surgical Extraction (very strong in mill, a must have). We have good counterspells too.
A really big problem for mill, is one card, a card that I hate so much, a card that alone can destroy our strategy: I am talking about Leyline of Sanctity. This card is my personal nigthmare XD. But now, we can fight this card, we have good responses, for example Feed the Swarm or Engineered Explosives , we can play Maddening Cacophony, Ruin Crab, Mesmeric Orb and so on; but my favourite card in that situation, is Thassa's Oracle and f*ck our opponent by simply milling oursleves. Nice, isn’t it? :P. Another problem are cards like Gaea's Blessing and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and that type of cards that make our oppo shuffle theryre gravyard in theyr deck.
So how can we win in these cases?
We can mill ourselves with Thassa's Oracle or we can try to exile their deck with cards like Ravenous Trap and Ashiok, Dream Render; or we can use a Surgical Extraction to remove the threat, but we have to restart milling them again, because the effect of the card procs anyways; but as you can see, we can answer to everything!
So, mill gives us a lot of creativity, smart and tech choises to do, based on our local meta or on what we enjoy more playing.
