It's back baby. For a while, b/w tokens was a high-cost deck that just wasn't competitively viable, but since the spike in modern, prices some might even call these deck budget. Surprisingly enough though there aren't really any other factors that have increased the deck's viability. But that doesn't mean that this deck is a diamond in the rough. The last time tokens exploded onto the scene was with the printing of the fetch lands and Sorin, Solemn Visitor. Recently as I was reviewing these decklists I noticed something quite wrong, the heavy emphasis on dual lands that were at an extreme detriment to the performance. The deck was being turned into more of an aggro-burn strategy instead of a midrange/combo one. So all though this list is not incredibly new or surprising it is definitely a viable tier 2-3 deck that can be purchased on a budget.

Token Generators Show

Spectral Procession: Spectral Procession is essentially a win on a stick. The card is packed with power with limited disadvantages. Considering the deck only ever needs 1 black open on the board at a time, colour fixing is not even an issue. With downsides as negligible as these the upsides are very very transparent. Having three potential 2/2 or 3/3 flyers will straight up win you games. IF you turn three procession into turn four Sorin, Solemn Visitor you will pretty much win the game.

Lingering Souls: Lingering Souls is one of the two insane cards in the deck. First of all the ability to provide two 1/1 flyers is amazing in itself but its flashback ability puts it over the top. Flashing it back can be incredibly useful in grittier matchups like jund and control-based strategies.

Timely Reinforcements: This is a great card that definitely deserves a few spots on your list if you're playing a slower build. This 3 mana raise the alarm is a very sideboard-esque card but is something you will most likely want to have in the mainboard for game 1.

Raise the Alarm: This is just a very basic card to spout out tokens and stop early game threats.

               OR

Bitterblossom: This card is great if you want to try a more aggressive build of the deck. To properly utilise this cards power without killing yourself you will want to remove disruption and play some card: Soul wardens

Anthems Show

Intangible Virtue: Intangible virtue is the card that will ultimately win you games. This is a 4 of must that turns your 1/1 flyers into Serra-bears. If you can get 2 down your opponent will need to board in some serious hate.

Sorin, Solemn Visitor: This card is one fo the primary win-cons in your deck. Being able to swing in with 3-4 3/2 life linkers will completely destroy your opponent. This card also really stands out in bitter blossom builds as it counteracts a lot of the life loss.

Zealous Persecution: This card is another one of your win cons. Although being in the crazy slot of 1 of win con this card will change the game for you. The card allows you to take out half their board if they try to all-out attack you in desperation before you take over. Even as a turn 2 play against infect the card is phenomenal. There is a lot to say about this card and how it can be used but you really only need to remember one aspect of the card: Versatility

Removal Show

Path to Exile: If their not playing control then any 1 drop that can effectively stall the game is insane. Also its totally broken.

Dismember: Dismember is most often a desperation play but if you have a Sorin, Solemn Visitor in play, your life total is insignificant.

                 OR

Murderous Cut: Even though it's not really an alternative to dismember, it should be considered as a potential one of for slower grittier games.

Hand Disruption Show

Thoughtseize: When your objective is to dump your hand and win on turn 5-6 a thoughtseize could not be sweeter. Considering around 2-3 token/anthem cards can single handily win you the game, sacrificing a card in your hand to disrupt any combo/win-con pieces is incredible. This card warrants the 3 slot but can be risky when played in conjunction with Bitterblossom.

Inquisition of Kozilek: Diet Thoughtseize. Always a 4 of no matter what.

Utility Lands Show

Windbrisk Heights: This card is your turn 1 play #7-11. If you don't have hand disruption getting this thing down immediately is insane but that's not only where it shines. Windbrisk also functions phenomenally later in the game as it sets you up to win in the next few turns. It also almost functions as a tutor and will help you get your anthems for when you need them.

Vault of the Archangel: If you leave 4 mana up your opponent will straight up refuse to attack you and considering the slow gritty style of your deck, this is definitely not a bad thing.

                    OR

Shambling Vent: This card does not even get close as a mainstay in a midrange beatdown build but definitely has a place in a slower grittier life gain build. This oddly enough even works in control matchups as there man lands damage will be negated by the life link.

Sideboard Show

Kataki, War's Wage: Affinity is a much faster deck than ours, but it will burn out relatively quickly. Kataki is just making sure it does.

Burrenton Forge-Tender: Burn is another problematic deck for ours to face. Burrenton can basically finish off their board by blocking there guides and stopping there anger of the gods.

Ghost Quarter: Setting tron a turn back can win you some games. Ghost Quarters also functions as a counter to grindy celestial colonades.

Relic of Progenitus: Dredge will just keep trading with your tokens so it's best to shut them up.

Aven Mindcensor: Way too many fetchlands in the current meta.
