Alright, if they do vamp tribal, then I will also look for a suitable replacement for Doom Blade because most vamps are black. So yeah, I'll look for those cards now, and I'm glad you like it! It was actually inspired by my IRL golgari deck. :)

It looks fairly easy to pilot and it's a nice change of pace, which is what I was looking for right now. As far as the removal spells go, most of the 2-cost black ones do seem conditional. I might just have extra stuff like Ultimate Price and swap it out depending on who's playing what. There's certainly options there.
Murder would work ok but it requires 3 mana. Hmm...

There are spells like Smother, Reave Soul, Bone Splinters, Death Stroke, Defeat, Devour in Shadow, Human Frailty, or Wretched Banquet.
Pick your poison. XD

How about Consuming Aberration? It's not too expensive and give you an amazing creature. For a few extra mana it's significantly better than Wight of Precinct Six

ComradeJim270 says... #6
A little steep in mana cost, Jack-Frost, but it would be a good finisher. Something to consider.
As for the removal, I'll probably make a pseudo-sideboard to change it up. NoviceMagician, you don't mind if I put a copy of this up on my profile and all that? I'd imagine not, but it's good to check.

How about Mind Grind or Mind Funeral? They are a touch more expensive but are still relatively cheap and are amazing mill cards.
Also, if you want it as a finisher I would drop one card such as one Tome Scour for one Consuming Aberration

If you want to take a look at my mill deck Mill into Oblivion it might give you a few ideas. It's not budget but the entire cost comes out of a few cards that can easily be replaced.

ComradeJim270 says... #9
I like Mind Funeral! It's 3 CMC, sure... but it could maybe replace a couple of the curse cards because it can potentially get a lot of creatures into the opponent's yard really quickly.
I don't think I'd drop Tome Scour for the Aberration, it's too good of a tempo play here. If anything I'd want to swap out Curse of Death's Hold to maintain the curve.
Also, goldfishing control is tricky. But I've noticed this is a bit short on draw power. Read the Bones or Sign in Blood could be good for that while leaving open.
Thoughts, NoviceMagician?

Consuming Aberration is an awesome card, don't get me wrong, but it just isn't for this deck. Being used as a finisher doesn't change much, because all the other creatures will be a good enough size by then, and there is high potential for 5/5 demon tokens to be present.
This actually isn't a focus on mill. There are mill cards, but there are just alternative ways of putting creatures in graveyards, kinda like a gamble of a kill spell. But if Comrade wants it to be more mill based, then it can be.
Mind Funeral could be in Curse of the Bloody Tome's place of you wish, just bear in mind it'll bring the price up by $10 for just 3 cards.
The deck is pretty consistent, which is why draw was left out in the first draft, but if you'd like some draw spells I can add some in.
EDIT- Almost forgot, ;)

Oh, I also forgot, I don't mind if you copy the deck onto your profile ComradeJim270, this was designed for you afterall. :)

ComradeJim270 says... #15
Hm, agreed on Consuming Aberration. It's not likely to be relevant here. Mind Funeral is a possible future addition. The deck doesn't need more mill; that's just fuel for its creatures and I like that design. It does add another control element through resource denial.
I'd have to playtest it against other decks to determine if the draw spells are needed. But if they are, what would you take out and what would you put in? Both these colors have plenty of draw power.
July 19, 2015 1:10 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #16
The counter spells are definitely up for cutting for draw spells, especially since you don't like counter spells. :P
As for what would be put in, prolly the infamous blue 1 drops.
July 19, 2015 2:01 p.m.
ComradeJim270 says... #17
I don't mind counterspells, they're useful. I just don't get the sheer pleasure out of them that some of my playgroup does. I swear, for some of those guys their favorite word is "no". I was actually thinking of Curse of Death's Hold, which I'm not sure is that useful unless I'm missing something.
Hm. So Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm? Could work.
Also: Grave Matters

NoviceMagician says... #18
Curse of Death's Hold is another one. It was only out in for absolutely no reason in particular. :P
Which if the 1 drops do you fancy? I prefer Brainstorm and Ponder, but it's up to you.
July 19, 2015 2:38 p.m.
ComradeJim270 says... #19
I actually have a Ponder or two, so that'd be the one. Another thing I'm considering are some slightly more powerful draw spells to refill my hand late game, which is why I was looking at a few of the black ones. That has the advantage of leaving blue open, but those spells are less powerful than a lot of their blue counterparts so it's a tradeoff of sorts.
July 19, 2015 2:44 p.m.
Jack-Frost says... #20
I like Ponder best but depending on whether you want the speed or not Brainstorm's instant speed is a huge advantage. Also, for a bit more control why not run Gitaxian Probe? The knowing your opponent's hand is a huge advantage. In addition, it is only a one drop but if you need to save the blue you can pay for it with life instead.
Oh and I just checked and I wanted to let you know that Ponder and Preordain are banned in modern. I know you play casual but some people may not like playing with banned cards regardless of the format. An option if you like Preordain is Serum Visions. That is what replaced it.
July 19, 2015 3:27 p.m.
ComradeJim270 says... #21
Good suggestions, it's just that a lot are out of budget for now. Great point on Brainstorm though.
July 19, 2015 3:35 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #22
Casual, modern bans don't mean anything.
That being said, I actually like Brianstorm the best too. XD
So how many draw spells would you like in Comrade?
July 19, 2015 4:50 p.m.
ComradeJim270 says... #23
It really just needs 2-3 to stock up my hand in late-game. I've goldfished it a few times with a couple in there and that seemed ok.
July 19, 2015 5:06 p.m.
NoviceMagician says... #24
So would you rather have a black spell to get you more cards? Like Sign in Blood or Read the Bones?
July 19, 2015 5:07 p.m.
ComradeJim270 says... #25
I tried it with Sign in Blood. I might swap it out for a blue spell after testing, but that seemed to work alright for now.
ComradeJim270 says... #1
I like it! Seems like a good starting point and I have a lot of these cards already. One change that does need to be made is replacing Victim of Night because some of my buddies do vampire tribal. Other than that? Looking forward to trying it out.
