Thassa's Oracle and the State of the Format —Jan. 20, 2020

Okay - hey everyone. I promised I would provide an update after the B&R update concerning how Thassa's Oracle affects Flash + Protean Hulk, and how it may change CST. I'm just gonna go in order here and then talk about what this means for cEDH as a whole.

For reference, here's the Oracle Core.

1. Does CST play Oracle?

Absolutely. For now - I've swapped it main in the place of Laboratory Maniac as the role is similar but this one dodges removal far more effectively in the Consult/Pact role. It may be optimal to run all 3 effects but for now let's just leave it at the swap.

2. How does this affect CST's standing?

Here is where things likely get, well, a bit more disappointing. But let me start with something more abstract.

CST is more of a concept than a deck itself, where the strongest card choices and overall deck quality guide the deck as the foremost strategy. It's this idea which made the list you see here. How can the commanders be absolutely optimized? What are the best combos which are powerful yet also compact? And of course, how can a deck be built where nearly every card is live and real at all stages of the game?

With Oracle, Flash Hulk now gained the capacity to do just what CST does. With Oracle finally making the Hulk pile compact enough to be nearly as efficient as Scepter and able to layer cleanly with Consult, Scepter is just not a good choice anymore. Hulk now gets the benefits CST did while being a Flash Hulk deck, a combo which is mostly certainly now the most powerful combo in EDH.

3. What will happen to CST?

Well, unfortunately things don't look great. Oracle Hulk is likely just a better deck.

I will keep this updated but it is likely that it won't be the most optimal choice any more due to its main strength being acquired by Hulk.

4. What about cEDH?

It's tough to say but with the two best combos finally layering it will be very difficult to push the format farther without some power singularity caused by Oracle Hulk. Is the format solved? Well, it's tough to say with exactness but right now, it certainly looks it.

5. This post isn't Sleepy persona.

Yeah. I know. I'm tired.

I'm not sure I'll do too much more cEDH optimization and deck building if the status quo maintains.

I'll probably mess with bad KCI trash more and more from here on. Or something bad which clearly makes everyone question everything I do. Well not that you don't already. But whatever.

Okay, well, that's about what I got. I've added some Hulk meta things to the Maybeboard to fight it, should you want to play CST.

WotC can finally say merfolk isn't a trash deck so yeah congrats to merfolk for finally doing it.

I really like it. Flexible and generally pretty strong.

Is Thassa's Oracle worth it once it comes out? Would you cut Jace, Wielder of Mysteries or Laboratory Maniac for it?

I'd just play all 3 for now. LabMan would be the replacement if I was picking.

Though admittedly with the release of Oracle it's likely that you don't want to play this deck. Hulk is better.

I've been saving up to build this/something like this deck for a while, do you think I should stop and just try to trade/sell what I have to move to Hulk or do you think Scepter decks can hold their own ?

qjone003 Many of the expensive pieces are similar between the decks. However, I wouldn't bother our hashing anything at the moment until the dust settles. The RC has confirmed that there will be an announcement (banning or not) on the Monday following the pre release.

qjone003 I personally like the scepter lines better but that is because I have run decks that run scepter in the past and am use to how it works. I just build this deck and have had good luck with it so far. The only changes I made are a weaker mana base (too poor to afford original duals) and no Imperial Seal or Timetwister (for the same reasons). I also added Neoform , Faeburrow Elder , Incubation Druid and Freed from the Real . The games I have won so far have been thanks to these additions. Granted I am new to this deck but With Thassa's Oracle I feel like Neoform becomes stronger in this deck. I agree with zwells3 wait for the dust to settle and see what brewers come up with even is nothing gets banned / unbanned.

Yeah, what zwells3 said.

I'll update this list come time of the RC announcement when things are more settled and we can learn if we are gonna be playing with Flash , Demonic Consultation , etc. for a longer period of time.

Thassa's Oracle will be in the list for sure - I'll keep this list updated still, but if Fish Hulk lives the future of CST as a premier and top deck looks grim (tutor). Fish Hulk material and a core list is being worked on now by the consult gang and the hulk gang - basically everyone who had their decks immediately wiped when Oracle was spoiled (this one included).

):

It'll look quite like this deck, less a Scetper, and maybe some wheels, and just have Flash.
