Welcome to my commander deck featuring one of the 5 founder of EDH (but slightly newer!), Chromium, the Mutable

I've always been a fan of control-style decks. As soon as I got into commander I wanted to build a Sen Triplets control deck. Many years on I still hold onto that but having come across a few Sen decks, along with the general consensus between players that the Triplets are 'Kill on Sight' I finally took the plunge and built my control deck, except I swapped Sen for Chromium, the Mutable. The simple reason(s) for this is:

  1. He has flash which allows us to keep mana open if required or block.
  2. He's difficult to remove and mostly requires a boardwipe to get rid of
  3. Esper colours, excellent control colours
  4. He's a finisher. Being a 7/7 with flying evasion means it's a 3 turn clock on anyone.

Since 'controlling' 3 players is significantly harder than a single player, I've learnt it's about picking your right targets to remove, counterspell or when to board wipe. This was probably one of the harder decks I've built in a long time trying to find the right balance and will probably change the more I playtest it.

Because our commander doesn't have any built in card draw, I've added more to help keep our engine going. We have Kefnet the Mindful which is an excellent card as it allows us to play our dual facing land cards for mana early then bounce and play them later game. Stinging Study nets us 7 cards for 5 mana, good trade! We also have creatures like Mulldrifter and Baleful Strix gets us some cards and do double duty as blockers. Finally, Triskaidekaphile has a built in wincon for those awesome alt wincons.

Being part Orzhov, we are granted some of the best removal offered in Magic. We also run a good amount of board wipes/bounce spells for when things get too busy and people start coming our way. We also run quite a few tutors to make sure we can find what we need when we need it. Being part Azorius means we have some of the best counterspells available too like Dovin's Veto.

Overall, this deck needs to fly under the radar until one person is eliminated then you can start making your move. It's much easier controlling 2 instead of 3! I'd appreciate any suggestions in regards to balancing counterspells/removal/wipes as I struggled to find the right balance of these. Run too many wipes and you spend the entire time annoying people by resetting the game over and over. Run too many counterspells and the same thing happens. Always try to look like the hero by preventing key interactions instead of the villain stopping the fun for your opponents. If you liked this deck, please check out my others below:
