i would drop Dreg Mangler at least, dont think you can benefit from his overcosted scavenge when Varolz gives it

Dreg Mangler is in there more for the fact that he's a 3/3 for 3 with haste

I would personally go for aggro rather than midrange, with the hydra topping out the curve.
here's my thoughts:
1 Drop - Total 8
4x Slitherhead
4x Elvish Mystic
2 Drop - Total 8
3 Drop - Total 6
4x Dreg Mangler
4 Drop - Total 4
2x Ghor-Clan Rampager (also just in here for bloodrush)
5 Drop - Total 2
x Drop - Total 4
2x Vastwood Hydra
Removal - Total 4
2x Abrupt Decay
2x Dreadbore
Tricks - Total 4
Side - Total 15
3x Putrefy
4x Doomblade
Lands - Total 22
4x Blood Crypt
6x Forest
3x Swamp
3x Mountain

you need to drop 6 cards, and as far as creatures go IMO Dreg Mangler is the weakest link. you could lose the 6 instant spells you have and just go creatures.

If you want a haste enabler in the 4-drop slot, I think Ogre Battledriver is a better option (the only thing about him is the double red cost as opposed to BR, but you can easily work your lands around this). The reason being that the creatures coming in won't need to get or have counters on the turn they come in to gain haste. Also, the +2/+0 is nice. He is definitely a contender to replace Hellrider in aggro decks once he rotates.
Also, if you do decide to go creature heavy, Domri Rade is great at giving you card advantage and acts as a pseudo-removal. His ultimate should you ever get there is game-ending, too.
Also, for funsies, Armed / Dangerous is a decent option for your combat tricks.
Try to decide which end of the midrange curve you want to lean toward and we can start from there.

I have a deck exactly like this except I'm running Elvish Mystic and Scavenging Ooze . Why did you feel like those didn't work? I love getting some ramp so you can turn 3 Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch , turn 4 Kalonian Hydra . Also I have two Domri Rade , I'd absolutely recommend him. There's never been a moment where I haven't been happy to see that on my draw.

Schuesseled -How's that post rotation mana base been working for the deck? The lands are my only concern right now for rotation. Of course hoping for something from Theros, but can't rely upon it. How do you like the Savageborn Hydra
? What do you normally cast it for?
shadowsike -How's your post-rotation mana base working out? I honestly think you can cut 1-2 lands too. Since you're running Putrefy , Dreadbore , and Abrupt Decay which of the 3 do you tend to like drawing/using/playing the most?
Jigglytuff -Thanks for the thoughts. Maybe I'll give Elvish Mystic (and possibly Scavenging Ooze ) another try. Can't hurt to play test with them. What cards would you suggest I drop for each of them?

Taytora - The mana base works really well right now i only get screwed on mana once in a while, and for the counters I usually end up using Dreadbore the most out of all of them I'm actually thinking of taking out Abrupt Decay and just putting that in the sideboard.

You have to try fitting at least 2-3 Scavenging Ooze s in the main (or even in the side). It's a very powerful card and is currently taking the format by the storm.
You also have Doom Blade as another option for removal.
I also don't think your curve is high enough to run Primeval Bounty . You don't have the acceleration to get to it as fast as something like Jund Midrange does. And I assume that this is there for the control matchups, I suggest a different route. Also, you don't have that many noncreature spells to trigger its counter ability! Garruk, Caller of Beasts seems to be a better choice (even mainboard) for this. The problem is that it has the same problem of you not being able to accelerate into it like GW or GU elves decks can.
If you like counters, Savage Summoning is also an option (especially against control if you want to go that way). Of course, this opens you up to a 2-for-1 if they are holding a removal, so you'll have to watch their mana before going for it.
Deadbridge Goliath is still pretty good 4-drop (a 5/5 for 4 with an ability relevant to your theme is a pretty good deal.)
I do agree that some type of acceleration would be beneficial to this deck. Elvish Mystic is an obvious option right now. You also can run Gyre Sage .
You also still have Skullcrack as a sideboard option against lifegain, which may become a thing since it's already starting to become a thing.
That's all I got for now :P
