combo-aggro american deck. Turn 3 win is possible, example is in the updates section.
Let me start by giving you an example game I played against mono-black devotion:
opening hand: Hallowed Fountain,
Hero of Iroas
,Sacred Foundry,
Madcap Skills
, Boros Charm, Swan Song
me, turn 1: shocked Hallowed Fountain (opponent looks confused)
him, turn 1:swamp and Thoughtseize...TAKE A BIRD, I say as I counter with my Swan Song and hand him a bird token. Priceless.
me, turn 2: drew Gods Willing, shocked Sacred Foundry, played
Hero of Iroas
him, turn 2: played Mutavault and
Pack Rat
and swung at me with the bird token, putting me at 14
me, turn 3: drew and played a plains. enchanted with
Madcap Skills
and swung for 6, putting it at 14-14
him, turn 3: played a swamp and played Lifebane Zombie he looked at my hand and scooped, seeing how I could Gods Willing and Boros Charm for lethal unblockable damage!
Had I not countered that turn one Thoughtseize, maybe he would have stood a chance, but this is why Swan Song is amazing!
Maindeck Breakdown
Pursuit of Flight
and
Madcap Skills
are extra damage and evasion
Fabled Hero
and Boros Charm deal large double strike damage
Hero of Iroas
makes
Pursuit of Flight
and
Madcap Skills
one drops.
Ethereal Armor is just absolutely crazy. With the amount of enchantments in this deck, it is easy to make this a +4/+4 on
Fabled Hero
. Or put it on a
Hopeful Eidolon
turn two and watch your opponent cry.
Hopeful Eidolon
provides some early game hope and damage. Plus the life gain here is nothing to scoff at as it cancels out the damage this deck takes from the 12 shock lands and 3 mana confluences.
Favored Hoplite
makes it fairly easy to get my opponent around 5 life by turn three
Fiendslayer Paladin is relevant because of lifelink and how difficult it is to remove in the current meta.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos is just a crazy powerful creature!
Swan Song stops Detention Sphere,
Dissolve
, Hero's Downfall,
Celestial Flare
,
Thoughtsieze
, and even Courser of Kruphix for just 1 mana! and who cares about a measly 2/2 flyer when they will be dead turn 4 every game!
Boros Charm stops Supreme Verdict and any other kill spell
Gods Willing is great for unblockable and saving my creature
Sideboard Breakdown
Banishing Light is simply there to deal with Detention Sphere
Detention Sphere deals with many threats, one big one is master of waves, as one of the hardest things for this deck is dealing with an army (unless I have an
Aqueous Form
out)
Chained to the Rocks
is used against aggro match ups, G/R monsters, and possibly mono-black if I need to be quicker than Detention Sphere (still need to test that one)
Hammer of Purphoros is a key card in my sideboard. Against control decks, the token generation is very nice as those games can go long anyways so I don't need my excess mana. But on top of that, the haste makes it possible to simply surprise in 20+ damage if I topdeck a fabled hero and have been holding onto some auras. Not sure if this deserves a place in the main board, but it most certainly could.
Silence can effectively work similar to Time Walk against the right deck. Shutting down an extra turn with this deck can be the difference between the game. Also, doing it on my own turn to ensure comboing off is something that may also be a use for this card.
Mizzium Mortars kills
Blood Baron of Viskopa
and Stormbreath Dragon
an extra Swan Song if I also need to counter Courser of Kruphix or Eidolon of the Great Revel
Fiendslayer Paladin is there so I can run a third if I need to.
Pithing Needle just general great sideboard card...no more Elspeth, Sun's Champion :)
Maybeboard Breakdown
Godsend seems extremely powerful. it makes them not want to block and I don't get 2-for-1'd as I can just re-equip. But it is fairly expensive and definitely only a one of if I do decide to use it.
Prophetic Flamespeaker is a powerful card. I was thinking 1-of in the main board, but I couldn't figure out how to do it, so I through one in the sideboard and will take out 1
Fabled Hero
against people running
Blood Baron of Viskopa
so I have a potential blocker if necessary. Also replaces Fiendslayer Paladin if need be.
So that is my standard American Aura Aggro deck. Let me know what you think, criticism is encouraged!
