11 lands that yield blue mana for 2x Swan Song in mainboard seems a bit much? Since you only have 3 more blue cards in sideboard i would suggest shifting the mana a bit.

It is also there for flying from Pursuit of Flight . Since I need the white mana the only blue mana I could cut would be Steam Vents but I need mountains for Chained to the Rocks . But this is true, I may be cutting the blue white scrylands for plains and mountains. Not sure

Stop Deckcycling this

Please

Stop. It's annoying to see the same deck over and over.

Sorry marke18968, I will stop. There is a standard competition at my local store tomorrow and I'm just trying to see if anyone has any last ideas. I wasn't under the impression that it was annoying, thanks for letting me know and I will no longer deck cycle this deck

How did it go in the competition in you local store?

Unfortunately I played in a sealed event and made it to the top 4, which overlapped the time of the standard event and was unable to play. But I played a bunch of games with it today and am very happy with the changes I made since the last event. Bringing in Brimaz, King of Oreskos over Aqueous Form was a great idea! My biggest downfall is keeping the right hands, as a creatureless hand is tempting and sometimes keepable, but when I keep one and never draw a creature it is very unfortunate. I get greedy sometimes haha. Thanks for asking Staro, do you have any ideas of how to make the deck more consistent?

(I haven't read any of the previous comments xD ) How do you feel about putting Aqueous Form in here? You are playing the blue for it, it's a heroic trigger, and gives you a Scry trigger on attack WITH making your creature unblockable. That seems rather good to me, especially since you are pretty much Voltroning up a creature to beat face in anyways.

I originally had two copies of Aqueous Form in the deck, and then I played at a competition and I needed more creatures in the main board. I took them out for two Brimaz, King of Oreskos and the deck has been much much more consistent since. But yes, I have had that in the deck before. Thanks for the input MTdude

I would replace the 3 Temple of Enlightenment with 2 Temple of Epiphany and a fourth Temple of Triumph . Maybe cut the Mountain for a third Mana Confluence ? I feel your mana base is stretched just a little bit and these changes may help. I would prefer to see if you could cut a land but I don't think you could do that without cutting all the basics and running a Izzet Guildgate or two. Anyways i like the deck, just my two cents +1

All the creatures are white, and Boros Charm and auras are red. The blue is extra for the Swan Song , sideboard addition, and being able to give flying with Pursuit of Flight . For these reasons I would say Temple of Epiphany is not as useful as the other temples here. I may cut a Temple of Enlightenment for another Mana Confluence though. And I need the mountain in case I side in Chained to the Rocks . Thank you for the input and I will definitely consider a 3rd Mana Confluence

So I took this deck to my local Wednesday Night Magic:

Results: 1-4

Game 1:

Matchup 1: Mono Blue Devotion 0-2

I took your advice and tried to win as fast as possible. Turn 3 my Favored Hoplite got Rapid Hybridization 'ed, basically putting me out of the game, especially after his Master of Waves for 6 the following turn.

Game 2 was a little closer, but I still got stomped on eventually by the raw power of chump blocks and Thassa, God of the Sea . I could never break through a wall of Frostburn Weird and Cloudfin Raptor while he had me on the clock with Thassa. Ironically, I lost the game with 2 Swan Song in my hand.

Conclusion from this match: If this deck is played aggressively, it opens itself up to getting put out of the game by removal. But, if I leave mana open to protect, this deck moves extremely slowly.

Matchup 2: Esper Control: 0-2

I've never been laughed at when I played at an event, but it happened. Despite having an awesome hand, he got a turn 2 Last Breath on my Favored Hoplite with a Madcap Skills on the stack. Then, he Syncopate 'd my Hero of Iroas , and finally he laughed at me while he Supreme Verdict 'ed my Nyxborn Shieldmate , the last card in my hand (JK-Swan Song was the last card in my hand, and it failed me again).

In the second match, he let me set up a lethal swing (I was swinging for 9 while he had 7 life) and he Hero's Downfall 'ed my Hero of Iroas , which I proudly Swan Song 'ed. He then champed with the token, and then wiped the board the next turn. Good guy Swan Song? I think not.

Conclusion: This deck can't really seem to function against decks with removal (every deck in the meta (?)?

Matchup 3: G/B Dredge

I sat down at the second to last table (Table 26-to be exact), ready to win a round, but was once again disappointed.

Game 1 started off with me having a hand of: Brimaz, King of Oreskos , Fiendslayer Paladin , Fabled Hero , Madcap Skills , Temple of Enlightenment , Temple of Triumph , and a Mana Confluence . A decent hand, but not when your opponent gets a turn 3 Nemesis of Mortals stonewalling all of your creatures (I drew a Favored Hoplite and Swan Song by this point). I managed to get a Madcap Skills on my Fabled Hero , but then lost the damage race after chump blocks with mana accelerants and Satyr Wayfinder and a follow up Whip of Erebos .

Game 2 basically ended with a Devour Flesh on my Hopeful Eidolon which had everything on it. I was quite a bit ahead on board and in terms of life, but this 1 for 5 action destroyed me, and he quickly won afterwards.

Conclusion: Other decks are easily faster than this. This deck is vulnerable to chump blocking.

Matchup 4: Izzet Aggro 1-2

Lost game 1 due to an awesome turn 4 kill with Nivix Cyclops , Armed , and Titan's Strength (seriously people, if you want something that wins turn 4, look into a deck like that-it's cheap too!).

Game 2 was my first (and last) win of the night!!! He got mana screwed.

Game 3 was actually close. He always had a burn to remove our guys with enchantments on the stack, and when I did actually get a creature to stick, it was easily stopped by a 7/8 Nivmagus Elemental . He swung me down to 4 life before I actually managed to get a Fabled Hero big enough to one hit kill him, which he promptly Disperse 'ed back to my hand! I conceded.

Matchup 5: I got a bye!

Game 1: I nearly lost due to the raw power of the 2/2 Bird token.

Game 2: It was this game when I realized that this deck preyed on the most dominant deck in the world: a standard 54 card playing card deck. The ten of diamond's managed to throw me for a loop, especially with its synergy with the 3 of clubs. My Swan Song proved utterly useless, especially against his ace of hearts.

Conclusion: This deck wins against absent opponents.

Conclusion for the night: In addition to having a terrible name, this deck performs terribly. I know right now I'm going to receive some hate for being very candid, however, this deck is marked competitive and is in the price range of a competitive deck, so it's only natural that this deck holds ground against the tier 1 "killing machines". Clearly it did not. This deck is horribly position in the current meta, which favors decks that run generally 8+ removal. This deck is easily taken down, and is games will often turn from great to terrible in one turn, and will never change back. I don't know what this deck is trying to accomplish, and it takes the stars (not planets) to align for this deck to work. The shopowner even asked me if I wanted to join the sealed tournament that was simultaneously occurring so I could actually win a game. I've never been so humiliated. 0.2/10; 10 out of 10 would never play again.

Thanks for Reading!

-Better luck with future decks-

Arorsthrar, thank you for the input, unfortunately I have yet to perform competitively with this deck, but I have also found that it seems very good on paper, but in the meta it is not performing as well as I have planned. Yes sometimes you have the answers to the removal, but when you don't, it gets it's ass kicked. I am trying to figure out how to make it better, but, and as you said, with all the removal in the meta, it really is going to need some help. In about two weeks I will be taking this deck to another standard tournament and maybe it will play better than the last one and yours (as the last one I went to I mulligained to 5 most games). I appreciate you bringing this to a competition. I am surprised to see that you did poorly against dredge as both Ethereal Armor and Pursuit of Flight really work well in that match up and it appears you never really saw them. The goal is to make this deck better, so if you found anything that you think should be removed or something you think should be added in please say something. It looks good on paper, as I said before, and apparently isn't performing too well. I believe this is because it has the potential but is missing something. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and effort!

Also I would like to add that I never said to try and win as fast as possible. Against many match ups, you play very carefully, not overenchanting or even enchanting at all until you have the means to ensure a kill or protect your creature. It is very important when playing this deck to slow yourself down to save your creatures

I tried a VERY similar deck before, with Aqueous Form , Triton Tactics , but I did not like the delay that blue causes. I prefer heroic with green and Hexproof creatures: Naya auras enchant heroic. Please test, suggestions & comments are very welcome

Your deck: I really think it is not worth the blue just because of one card

ryancsaxe says... #19

Thank you for your opinion. I do think naya hexproof is better in the meta, but I don't want to make an archetype. Also, the blue can activate Pursuit of Flight , which has won me a multitude of games. It also lets me play Detention Sphere . Blue is certainly for more than one card here
