ccmaci,
Yeah, there are a lot of fun infinite Thopter combos out there.

And yeah, Imprisoned in the Moon + Crumble to Dust is a way to nerf and then Exile Planeswalkers or other troublesome cards. I can't really imagine it here though, since it takes 7 mana and 2 cards which don't really synergize with anything else in the deck.

You may have missed this in the "This is an Izzet Control deck, but there are other approaches" section: I figure half the Internet is already trying to break Saheeli and Guardian, so I'm focused on Crackdown Construct for now.

Thanks though.

You might want to have a playtest against my combo deck Serve the Servos

Something a bit different.

I think you might have read the combo wrong.

This is probably the BEST control you can get with the Crumble to Dust + Imprisoned in the Moon Combo.

What you're doing is using Imprisoned in the Moon on a BASIC land, making it non-basic. Then because the non-basic land is still named a (for example) Plains, you use Crumble to Dust on the non-basic Plains and get rid of ALL THE PLAINS IN THEIR DECK AN FIELD!!!!

ccmaci,
Sorry, but that doesn't work. 'Basic' is a supertype. Casting Imprisoned in the Moon on a Plains makes it tap for but it's still a Basic land.

Please just hear me out here, I have video proof at the bottom as well if you need that (the text in the video is told by a judge).

The supertype of the land is changed, Imprisoned in the Moon says "Enchanted permanent IS a COLORLESS LAND" (not a basic) and "loses all other CARD TYPES and abilities"

Also, IF it was because of supertypes, then this combo wouldn't even be able to get rid of Planeswalkers or anything other than a land like you said in your example, the reason for that would be the land "is basic". But no, the Planeswalker loses the supertype PLANESWALKER and turns into NON-BASIC LAND.

Now I know this won't remove the lands on the battlefield, but you're taking 1/3 - 1/2 or even ALL their land from being played ever again. JUST THINK OF THE CONTROL HERE. I've seen NO ONE use this combo at my LGS but instead 2 videos on the topic, you can be the one to spread it!!!!!!

If you need more proof then watch the video here:

ccmaci,
I repeat: Sorry, but that doesn't work.

You and the Judge in your video should probably read the Gatherer text for Imprisoned in the Moon:

  • The permanent will keep any supertypes it previously had ... (y'all should probably read Rules 205.4c and 305.6 too, but again, Basic is a supertype, not a type).
  • If the enchanted permanent is a land and has land types, it retains those types even though it loses any intrinsic mana abilities associated with them. For example, a Plains enchanted by Imprisoned in the Moon is still a Plains, but it cant tap for White, only for Colorless.

And even if it did work, I repeat: I can't really imagine it here though, since it takes 7 mana and 2 cards which don't really synergize with anything else in the deck.

Thanks though.

May i suggest Slip Through Space? Its a good 1 mana unblockable spell.

Snivy__,
Slip Through Space has proven to be extremely meh in testing. I love the card in an Izzet Prowess deck, and actually started with it as four-of. But I moved it to a three-of, then a two-of, and just today dropped it to zero. The problem is it's basically a dead card in hand until the last play of the game (ok, it's not totally dead ... you can always cycle it or discard it to Key to the City for a Rummage). And having it countered on the Big Swing feels TERRIBLE.

Thanks though!

I've been playtesting this a lot against my Speedway Champions deck and it does really well.

Basically it comes down to whoever has the right Counter spell at the right time, as to who wins.

Argeaux,
Thanks, but I have to confess Speedway Champions may be the only fair match-up for this deck. I played against a bunch of different brews earlier this week and seriously went 0-5:

  • 0-2 vs. GW Tokens
  • 1-2 vs. Abzan Goodstuff
  • 0-2 vs. Jund Goodstuff
  • 0-2 vs. GW Goodstuff
  • 1-2 vs. UW Reservoir

I know Control is always tough early in the season and especially against Rogue brews (because it's hard to tell what really needs to be countered). And I also know I have a TON to learn about playing Control. But frankly, your time might be better invested testing against Raymond Perez' U/R Control (Top 16 SCG Columbus) :-/

So far in my testing a card I've found to be invaluable for control is Horribly Awry. Turning off Scrapheap Scrounger is huge, and its hits almost every relevant creature in standard. So far I've been going for a 4 HA - 2 Negate - 2 Disallow for my counter suite and I've had great results.

Torrential Gearhulk should also be somewhere in the deck... The value is just to real to make it any other way.

How has this deck been going in tournaments?

Argeaux,
I unfortunately haven't been able to do any tournaments since AER released :_(

Have you ever thought of Fling? If it's the sacrifice that's a worry, you can always bring it back from the graveyard. Key to the city seems cool, but it's susceptible to artifact hate. Unless you've thought and tested Fling before. Also, if they have Creature removal in response to attacks and KTTC, you can fling in response, and hold a counter spell for it. Let me know what you think because I have been wanting to build this combo abusing crackdown construct without playing that crazy artifact deck with metal work colossus. Also, fevered visions wouldn't be bad!

Torderro,
I haven't ever tested with Fling (as I was fiddling with this deck for AER, before Fling was in Standard), but I love the card and agree that it could be AWESOME in here.

I've found Fevered Visions to be great sideboard tech vs. Control (where I can run it effectively as a three-of), but I don't like it as much in the mainboard or for other matchups, where I really want to run it as a four-of.

Thanks so much for your comments and for getting me to take fresh look at the deck!

hey awesome of you to reply so fast. I'm going to be building a list similar to yours but also add a few things I think might work. If you ever want to play test on Cockatrice let me know.
