TheWhiteFang I concur worth the swiftspear not being a perfect fit. What do you suggest?

maybe it's just my meta at my LGS but this deck has not performed well for me which is a bummer because I love it. I ran R/W aggro pre DTK when it was ya know... actually good lol.

What version of this deck are you playing. Can you list deck and sideboard. What is it that is giving you trouble specifically?

@pidgeon: I think you should use Kolaghan Forerunners instead of Monastery, they may come out later, but the trample simply makes things run a lot faster.Take a lot at my deck and tell me what you think: Boros Tokens Budget (Help Needed)

I did a bit of research and thought, and it looks like Zurgo Bellstriker has a better endgame, since when you have a Impact Tremors or 2 and/or Purphoros, God of the Forge out, you can go dash pass turn. Not even swing. And since your hand gets dumped out super fast, swiftspear gets ~+3/+3 after you play it, and Zurgo will always bash for 2.

And what's your plan against a Dragonlord Ojutai or a Whip of Erebos? Those seem hard to beat.

May 7, 2015 6:57 p.m.

pidgeon says... #6

@swaggy those are my biggest concerns. All I've come up with is chain ojutai after you take 5 to the face or use stoke during attack. Erase is all I have for whip. Hopefully by the time either of those are out I've already established my board and then just clean up after that.

Lol, and don't bring me more problems. Bring solutions. You're making me think and I don't like it!!

@vittorsm looks like maybe drop the swiftspear for 2 runners and 2 Zurgo?

This deck might be week to Green devotion given your opponent can make huge creatures fast. If those big creatures have trample, you're pretty much screwed. Also, this deck looks weak to azorius heroic because if they hook a big creature up with Aqueous Form a game can end pretty quickly.

Personally i'd take 2 Roasts over 2Rending Volleys here, the 5 damage kills most of the large green creatures (Surrak, the Hunt Caller, Polukranos, World Eater, etc).

I'd also recommend an Outpost Siege since people tend to run things like Anger of the Gods, and you'll still be getting value after your creatures die.

doctorsmegma says... #9

No way. You can live without the Roast. With the stupid amount of people playing Esper Dragons, you need Rending Volley in the sideboard. Maybe once Esper Dragons dies down, replace the volley with roast. But rending volley can allow you to get the game back under control. They only run like 2 Dragonlord Ojutai so if you kill it, they need to sac Haven of the Spirit Dragon to get it back or start frantically drawing for another. Which means if one is dead and they Dig Through Time theyre likely to bottom Silumgar's Scorn and other annoying cards for the Haven or a 2nd copy of Ojutai. Rending Volley is one of the only cars that gives other decks a better shot at beating them. And for 1 mana 4 dmg, it trumps roast.

May 8, 2015 9:55 a.m.

pidgeon says... #10

Correct. I won't be switching out Rending Volley until ojutai stops being a threat m

Radiant Purge is something I've been thinking about. Takes out rhinos and jeskai ascendancy decks pretty quickly. Definitely in sideboard, but that's even if it's worth putting in. Takes out some dragons too.

pidgeon says... #11

The more I think about it, Radiant Purge would assist against nearly all decks in my meta.

pidgeon I was using your exact build up until it's very recent changes a few hours ago. Still didn't work out as well as I was hoping for :\

What did you play against. What did you see as far as weaknesses?

Ihazadeck says... #15

have you played this deck list a lot? have you played against different decks with it? Notice any bad matches? if your going to play fnm tonight, write down what cards did nothing for you to win the game and what cards you rather have in certain situations. Perhaps you need some more cheap removal like lightning strike or something. i like you going with Rending Volley over Roast, the only thing is that your not able to deal with green creatures that block well. If i were to make changes i would probable play 2 or 1 Evolving Wilds or some Mana Confluence. The deck seems legit, i would be very scared of cheap sweepers like Anger of the Gods, Drown in Sorrow and even Arc Lightning is kinda a sweeper.

pidgeon 1st round esper dragons, was able to barely squeeze by in that one. Game one was decently smooth with a turn 2 Impact Tremors being resolved followed with a Goblin Rabblemaster and no Silumgar's Scorn to stop them. Game two he sided in Bile Blight and Drown in Sorrow forcing me to rely on the ping damage but I never drew into any. Game three I squeezed it out with an end turn Secure the Wastes after he tapped out fully for Dragonlord Ojutai.

Game two same match up. Won game 1 lost two and three. Virulent Plague is a mother...

Game three lost to G/W aggro. This I just blame bad draws with because I just drew into nothing productive. And had two 5 hand mills.

Game four I won against jeskai aggro. His build was focused on trading threat for threat and not using sweeps such as Anger of the Gods.

It's weaknesses in my opinion are token hate. There's just so much of it atm. Now abzan based decks are more forgiving to go against cause you can resolve Impact Tremors and Purphoros, God of the Forge. But against esper it is an absolute mother to fight through not just the counters but the token hate along with their card advantage there's just not much you can do expect punish bad draws from them.

Can we get an explanation of why you made these massive changes?

May 9, 2015 1:10 a.m.

pidgeon says... #18

Syronosin you will have to explain which you are talking about. I've only changed 1 or 2 cards mainboard and anything in sideboard was to fit my meta.

Syronosin & pidgeon i think he meant the Forerunners and Wild Slash, not an extreme change in my opinion, Monastery Swiftspear is just for defense in the first few rounds :-)

pidgeon says... #20

I tried the forerunners and felt they slowed down everything. I had 2 in play and we're 5/3s. They did do a good job, but I felt that lightning berserker does a much better job. It's dash and early offense felt much nicer for me. I'll be running 3 berserkers and 2 swiftspear.

May 9, 2015 2:04 p.m.

pidgeon says... #21

Also, 4x Secure the waste slowed me down also. I'll be dropping down to 3, maybe 2 depending on play. I'll be putting in some stokes or strikes.

How are you finding Monastery Mentor? I've been playing this deck against my friend and he insists that it's too slow.

Also what are your thoughts about a sideboarded Myth Realized? I've been using it against control and found it to be amazing :) It costs one mana and is powered-up by your token spells.

Syronosin What you were looking at was me making changes to the deck that other people were suggesting. Basically you were looking at a playtest. I did play with it some and had posted my findings, which were that the original way was far better than what was suggested. Just stick to what it was.
I didn't want to not test something if there was a possibility of it being better.

And I would highly suggest tweaking your own sideboard, as what is popular in my area, might not be popular in yours.
