How do you stop Declaration in Stone? That single card, if it can get past your counters, will stop your deck.

Snow_Lynx you have made an amazing deck here! I have been making a Mill deck but feeling it is time to give up on it and try a different control deck. I am going to change Sigiled Starfish for Thing in the Ice Flip, mainly because I have a playset and also because it can clear the board. I know Sigiled Starfish can scry 1, but feel Thing in the Ice Flip could be stronger for me.

Bloodveld, you mean besides the 12 cards Negate, Void Shatter and Scatter to the Winds? Im not even mentioning Calculated Dismissal since it MIGHT not work at that point. Remember, YOU alone decide when to cast Rise from the Tides, so you are always prepared.
control_is_the_new_black, I concur that Thing in the Ice Flip is definitely better than Sigiled Starfish, but terribly pricey. This is a budget deck, and exchanging 4 cards on the side for very pricey cards won't do for me. Later, if I feel this deck is performing very well, I can change them so I can have even more stability and another win-con. But not for now, Im kinda broke, heh

Bloodveld, also you forget that they can only have 4 Declaration in Stone at the most, and Ive actually never seen a deck use 4 of them at all. But even if they do, you also have 4 Rise from the Tides plus 18 counters. If they have to use 2 Declaration in Stone for every Rise from the Tides+Counter, then they will run out of options by your 3rd Rise from the Tides.

Hello! I am playing a similar deck to yours, the one with brain in a jar. I found that the deck that I use focuses less on countering there threats and more on a sweet combo kill. I have the counterspells in the sideboard. It uses nagging thoughts, pore over pages, and pieces of the puzzle. It takes advantage of brain in a jar by letting me cast those sorceries at Instant speed. Anyways, your deck looks sweet! +1

pogo7147, thanks! Sorceries might work together with Brain in a Jar, but Im afraid it'd be very very slow.
Also, I couldnt find your deck. Link, please?

if you were not making this budget, but not going crazy and using Jace, Vryn's Prodigy Flip. what would you change?
May 11, 2016 5:41 a.m.
control_is_the_new_black, very little. I think Jace, Unraveler of Secrets, Thing in the Ice Flip and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger can see some play with this deck.

Just so you know, this isn't cruel control.
Cruel control was the name given to the control decks that used Cruel Ultimatum as a win con back in the day when it was in standard (alara - lorwyn).
On another note, nice deck! +1 from me!

K00lDudE1, thanks, didnt know that. Added "Counters" Hub instead.

No problem, it seems that most people don't know about it.
To be fair though, it is quite confusingly named, it does seem like it should be a control deck that makes the opponent lose the will to live during the game.

If I want to insert Jace, Unraveler of Secrets and Thing in the Ice into this deck, what would you suggest subbing out? I was thinking taking 4 Scatter to the Winds out, and putting in two of Jace and two of Thing.
May 11, 2016 5:04 p.m.
Kalamaury, I would suggest taking out 2x Void Shatter, 1x Crush of Tentacles and 1x Clash of Wills. Remember that Scatter to the Winds can also help as a win-con late game if you pay the awaken cost. Besides, if you are putting Jaces, you should take out at least one Crush of Tentacles so that you deck won't be very mana heavy and to lessen the chances of you drawing all your win-cons at the same hand. Thats what I would do anyways.

what would you suggest to take out in replace of Jace, Unraveler of Secrets and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. I have a playset of Jace, Unraveler of Secrets but I might buy Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger depending on how well it goes in a proxy deck
May 11, 2016 8:33 p.m.
control_is_the_new_black, I would take out 1x Crush of Tentacles and 1x Calculated Dismissal. My reasons for taking out the first is to lessen the number of high-mana cards, while the second is because Jace serves a better scry role and lategame Calculated Dismissal loses its efficiency as a counter.
It is what I actually intend to do once I get a larger budget (if ever).

With Jace and Thing subbed in, how well would this deck do in shop tourneys? Assuming most of them would be aggro decks.
May 12, 2016 1:23 a.m.
Kalamaury, I met someone here at my shop that got top 10 at Gameday with a deck based on Rise from the Tides. Granted, it was probably not as good and fleshed-out as this one is, but still his feat gives me hope this could be a very good contender for Top 8 in any T2 tourney, perhaps even Top 4.
Besides, it is hands-down the BEST budget deck in standard currently. It can hold his own against Midrange and Seasons Past decks easily if you know how to play. It shines even brighter against other Control Decks. So even if you can't get an awesome place, for this little money spent, I think it is VERY worth it.
The worst thing is when you spend hundreds in a deck and still get bad positions on a tournament, don't you think?
May 12, 2016 1:36 a.m. Edited.
Kalamaury, the best thing against aggro is that every counter you play will work, since they don't have many lands. Be patient turns 1 and 2, and then start countering like crazy (or cantrip if they don't play spells). Wait for your Engulf the Shore or Crush of Tentacles. Also, you can easily play your Rise from the Tides turn 6 to alleviate some pressure, since aggro decks don't have many sweepers (if they do, even better for you, as they will clean their board).
If you're having a hard time in your meta, put 4x Clash of Wills on the main deck, it can be used turn 2 against them!
Unless you get unlucky or they get heavenly luck, you will come out on top turn 5 or 6, even if youre down several life points. Just hold on and wait it out! Time is strongly on your side!
That being said, I think this deck is even better against Midrange and other Control decks, since their creature-removal will be granted useless. All you have to counter is their planeswalkers and cards like Seasons Past and that demonic tutor that gives them mana. If you flesh those out, they won't be able to do much as a good part of their deck is useless against creatureless decks such as this.
Also, let me know the results of your FNMs and tourneys so I know what to tweak!
May 12, 2016 1:51 a.m. Edited.
p.s - Against things like G/W tokens, your deck is even better! They take a while to build a strong token army. So counter their Nissa's and then use Engulf the Shore to destroy all their tokens and make Hangarback Walkers 0/0 again... even if you can't counter their Nissa for lack of counters (do not see that happening), you can still destroy all their tokens with Engulf the Shore and even take Nissa back to their hands with Crush of Tentacles. So I hardly see a defeat here.
