joking_pumpkin: I'll have to test it out again. I updated the deck a lot more after getting two Cryptic Commands. I decided to go ahead and throw in the Vendilion Clique too since I plan to get one soon.

I figure Cruel Ultimatum is your Dig Through Time, but I'd still go ahead and play at least one Dig because it's incredibly powerful.

What would you recommend taking out? I'm thinking of taking out the Vendilion Clique, but I think it has a good place in this deck. Maybe move the Damnation to the sideboard or just take it out of the deck.

I'd cut a Batterskull and a discard spell (possibly only the Batterskull), since Dig lets you find win conditions more consistently. Honestly, choose your worst nonland wincon and cut that.

If ur deck dies to blood moon u could try putting in red enchant hate in the SB

I'd actually advise cutting the Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for the third Island, as casting Cryptic Command under a Blood Moon is something you certainly want to be able to do. Actual enchantment destruction is both lacking in availability and unnecessary.

You clearly know what you're doing, NoPantsParade, so I just stopped in to vote and say how great your deck is! As a newer Modern player it's good to see someone with a bit more experience playing the same relatively underdog archetype. How do you do in tournaments?
+1, Grixis brother! If you would be so kind, stop by my deck as well to see what I've been working on.

Hey, thanks, Eretoryi! This is actually my first modern deck, so I'm not that experienced, but I do enjoy playing this deck. I'm just waiting for Cruel Control to become an actual thing in modern. I think it's just missing a couple pieces that American Control has access to. I haven't played this deck at any tournaments though. My LGS stopped doing modern FNM because no one was going, but I have played with people at my LGS as well as some friends. The deck has been playing well, and I am constantly changing it in paper. I will definitely stop by and check out your deck later!

What's you plan against affinity? :P A Chalice of the Void at 0 can help :)

CommanderMath, I have yet to play against Affinity, so I have no idea. I'm thinking about putting Shatterstorm or something in the sideboard. The most I have right now is Abrupt Decay and Damnation.

great deck, +1! I totally love the concept and wholeheartedly agree with almost every single choice you did here, i just have a few doubts:
I'm not sure i would splash green in there for Abrupt Decay, have you tested it yet?
..And between Extirpate and Surgical Extraction, why do you choose the second?
Against affinity I would probably try sideboarding Shattering Spree, you'd get to kill stuff faster than using Shatterstorm which requires you to have four mana.. affinity can do serious damage before turn four, you know ;)

I haven't gotten around to testing it so far at my LGS because they stopped doing modern when I got the deck looking like this due to a lack of players. But on Cockatrice, it has proven useful. I like Surgical Extraction because of the surprise factor in case I'm tapped out or something. In fact, I kind of forgot about Extirpate to begin with. I feel like they both have their pros and cons. I think it's meta dependent, but I feel like Extirpate would be the better option against control. I'll have to test out Surgical Extraction versus Extirpate at some point. Plus, 2x Surgical Extractions are what I have at the moment. And I'll have to throw in a couple Shattering Sprees into the sideboard after testing them. As far as I know, there isn't an Affinity deck at my LGS, but I plan to go to another one soon. If I end up taking out the green, then I can make room for some extra sideboard options, like Shattering Spree.

So I gave some thought to Abrupt Decay, and I decided to splash white instead of green for some Affinity and (Tron?) hate in the sideboard with one Shattering Spree, Kataki, War's Wage, and Stony Silence. I think the sideboard looks a lot better and less mana intensive than with one green source and 3 Abrupt Decays. What do you think about that or should I just stick with strictly three color? Personally, I like 4 color as it gives a bit more flexible sideboard that Grixis doesn't seem to have access to.

I'm glad you found my suggestions useful! Splashing white in seems a good choice to me, it does indeed give more answers than green, but the choice is as you said conditioned by your lgs meta, in the end.
The smaller (but sadly expensive) adjustment I'd think about making is using an Hallowed Fountain instead of a Godless Shrine, for the simple reason that you'll need blue mana more often than black. This would mean also that you'd have to change a few fetchlands, though: from BR to UR, i think.. but i'm not really sure about that, it might just destroy the solidity of your mana base for a potential smaller advantage in games 2 and 3. Might just be a totally bad idea, what do you think?

I do have a Hallowed Fountain sitting around somewhere, but I don't have the appropriate fetchlands. In my playing and testing, the Overgrown Tomb never gave my deck any trouble. I think the Godless Shrine would be fine since I can get it with both of my current fetchlands. Plus, with only two white symbols, it should be a little easier to cast the sideboard options unlike three Abrupt Decays. Hopefully the Zendikar fetches will be reprinted soon though. That would help.

Thanks! Because there aren't many Cruel Control decks around, I based my deck off the American Control decks, so they're kind of similar.

It's playable the blue red delver Will lock you down with all it's cheap spells and treasure cruise. Reanimator will probably rip you a new one and probably belcher.

ColdHeartedSith, you are talking about modern, right? I played against Delver on Friday night and actually did very well against it. Batterskull and Anger of the Gods kind of killed it. Although, he did lock himself out with Blood Moon, leaving him with only one blue source. I'm not quite sure what he had in his hand, though.

Very good player no, it doesn't sound like it! How did he let himself get angered. It's double red +1 very easy to play around. Especially after you do it once.
