I personally run x3 Mind Funeral since a few of my friends really enjoy counterspells and I really like seeing at least one every game. You have so many lands, that I think Hedron Crab could find a home in your deck it seems. I'd personally take out the Blue Sun's Zenith entirely in favor of more Visions of Beyond or even Thought Scour . I just like having more things to use earlier ;)

That's a very different strategy ninjaking92. I like it! and I'd never even heard of Royal Assassin so I will definitely be doing some test games with it.
GeminiSpartanX I used to include Hedron Crab but decided that it wasn't useful enough without building a deck that actually revolved around it.What would you drop in order to include the extra Mind Funeral ?The update I implemented a few seconds ago was:- -2 Blue Sun's Zenith
- +2 Visions of Beyond - something my test games already concluded but thanks anyway :)
- -4 Psychic Strike
- +4 Memoricide - Elixir of Immortality pisses me off way too much!

You also need some graveyard hate in here. Bojuka Bog and Leyline of the Void are pretty good for this. Without graveyard hate they could just use a Wheel of Sun and Moon or Elixir of Immortality . Exiling the graveyard makes Elixer useless.

I'd take out a Guard Gomazoa for the 3rd Mind Funeral . In modern you really want to win by turn 5-6, so spending a turn throwing out a blocker is one turn that doesn't advance your gameplan. Try it out and see if you notice the lack of a 3-mana blocker. Another option is to take out the Keening Stone since it doesn't win until T7, but with the list you have here I'd remove the Guard before something that helps your deck win. Just my thoughts though!

@ducttapedeckbox I probably should have poseted that description on this deck for others to see. so to reiterate:
"When I actually play it I replace Mind Sculpt with Glimpse the Unthinkable so I obviously can't remove that. The maybe board contains cards I own and am considering.I think I need to include additional Mind Funeral but I am not sure how just yet. I removed Psychic Strike for Memoricide to counter that pest Elixir of Immortality but that doesn't really help me defend myself. Mana Leak is another option. I have 7 defenders and yet they don't protect me from everything. If I'm having a bad run Traumatize is great for a catch up but in a good run it isn't worth the mana."This deck has been slightly modified since

Well, looking through your deck, you've already got a pretty decent one. From your description, I'm guessing milling is your win-con (obviously, as that's the point of a mill deck...). Always fun, but do you have anything that can benefit you from milling? Not necessarily just creatures (though a Lazav, Dimir Mastermind or a Consuming Aberration or a Wight of Precinct Six certainly never hurts), but maybe something like a Crypt Incursion , which isn't a perfect counter to Elixir of Immortality , but at least they're not getting any creatures back. But besides that, here's a few quick notes:
Even though Keening Stone has a great ability, I honestly think it's a little too slow for the deck. Sure, it's wins you the game if you combo it with Traumatize , but seeing how you can't use it until at least turn 7 unless you cheat it out somehow, I'd probably just take it out altogether. Of course, since you only have one in there, I'd imagine you're aware of this and have it just as a late game finisher if you pull it out by then. Mind Grind might be a better option, since casting that by turn seven should devastate his library unless you've got crap luck.
Haunting Echoes
and Memoricide
are definitely good cards, and perfect counters to any Elixir of Immortality
you might come across, but, much like Keening Stone, I think they take a little too long to get going and Haunting Echoes
is only going to do you good if you've milled a ton before casting them. I'd definitely keep them in the sideboard in case you run across an Elixir or a graveyard deck, though.
I'm not sure how I feel about Archive Trap . As you mentioned, it's a fantastic combo with Ghost Quarter , but otherwise it's a little too expensive to hard cast for what you're getting (For three mana, you could get rid of 15 cards with Glimpse the Unthinkable and Tome Scour . Until you can put in 4 Ghost Quarters (Maybe replacing your Nephalia Drownyard , perhaps?), I would just sideboard them for now. They might do well against a black deck tutoring their way to their favorite cards, but otherwise it's a little inefficient.
I'm a little mixed about Dimir Aqueduct
. Yes, it gives you both BU, which means you're only tapping one land for most of your mill spells, but the returning of lands slows your game down a little bit. I'd probably keep, but I wouldn't play them until later on in the game.
Gomazoa is a good choice for the deck. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have more of him and run the chance of milling whatever just attacked you.
Definitely use more Mind Funeral s if you get the chance. Very underrated card.
The bottom line is that with milling, you need to be fast and efficient with it. Obviously, you've got the cards to do that, as most of your mill spells only cost 3 mana max and should mill at least 92 cards (that's not counting Mind Funeral or Jace) if you use all of them. Anything that costs more than that, I would prefer to take out and replace with either more creatures (maybe something that can go on the offensive, like a Wight of Precinct Six ) or some more control, which leads to my next point:
Aside from a few cards that are too expensive, the only other major problem is that there isn't much in the way of kill spells or counterspells. I know that their usefulness can vary depending on the deck you're playing, but hey, countering an Elixir is the best way to make sure they don't use it again. As fun as mill decks are, they're not great against creature-heavy decks unless you've got answers for all of them. Your defenders certainly help, but it's a bit less stressful to just counter/kill their guys. As such, I'd recommend putting in a few Go for the Throat
s, Doom Blade
s, or Death's Approach
(Sideboard it, though, since not all decks are creature-heavy) and some counters like Psychic Strike
or Mana Leak
. Maybe even a Swan Song
or two, since your flyers can just block the token.
Ultimately, I'd say that even most of my "problems" with this deck are really just sideboarding issues. You've got the mill part of the deck down well enough, so I really don't think that needs much work beyond taking one or two unnecessary cards out. The only alterations beyond more control that I'd recommend would be to put a couple of creature cards that you can use offensively, like a consuming abberation or a Wight or maybe even a Nemesis of Reason if you want to keep the milling going on. I saw you mention it, but Duskmantle Guildmage isn't a bad idea at all, since his ability could very easily kill an opponent by turn 6 or so. You seem to have put a lot of work into it, and it shows. A few changes here and there, and you could have a nasty little deck here.
Also, congrats to you for getting 4 Glimpses. If I had the money for them, I totally would...

Love the build. Great job! I also appreciate the effort and organization you put into the description - by far the best description I've seen in a while. Here are two thoughts I had, keeping in mind what you've mentioned on my wall:
- Your creatures die pretty easily to burn spells, so I might suggest keeping Fog Bank but replacing the two Jellyfish with Wall of Frost . You lose the flying but gain the lockdown of forcing creatures to not untap.
- I definitely agree that you could find room for a fourth Mind Funeral - it's one of my favorite cards of all time. You could probably drop either Breaking or Memoricide down to three for an additional Mind Funeral
Not sure how these would work out, but let me know what you think!

Very interesting. Keening Stone as a 1-of is a good potential finisher and I like the other less-used varients of 2x Haunting Echoes and 4x Memoricide (is 4 of that best?)
Definitely a +1 from me. I'd love your two cents on my Dimir Deceit.

+1 looks good! Would you splash white for Path to Exile and Ghostly Prison perchance?
January 23, 2014 5:16 a.m.
I doubt it emask. Splashing a third colour would slow this deck down too much. Thanks anyway

I would recommend 4x Archive Trap in Modern. I'm running a modern Esper Mill Control deck, and Archive Trap is godly. With the prevalence of fetch lands, you will be getting free triggers for Archive Trap consistently, and with a good enough land base, splashing for white to get Path to Exile can force the same thing.
4x Archive Trap gives a potential turn one win in Modern, and I suppose that's the bottom line here. Feel free to check out my deck for some ideas, although we do run very different game plans and can't expect too much to be the same between our decks, save for two of the colours and an empty library on the other side of the table.
It's a Trap! (Esper Mill Control)
Overall though, I really like your deck. +1 from me.

No worries! I agree with LittleLeaf.
Really, splashing a third colour probably wouldn't slow you down at all if you give fetchlands a chance. The removal is worth it in my opinion. Also with Archive Trap , you do have a better chance at milling them out faster--especially game one which is a mystery and fetchlands aren't hesitated upon.
Trapmaker's Snare makes it more potent. If you did have the white, you could include cards like Lingering Souls Ghostly Prison etc which are great defence.
Anyways, you don't have to do add white by any means, but I run an esper mill list and have got to say that white has only helped speed me up if anything--made things more efficient.
Good luck!

-4 Tome Scour (I don't know why people think this card is good--it isn't.)
+2 Archive Trap
January 26, 2014 9:41 p.m.
My issue with the Ghost Quarter and Archive Trap combo is that it is may ability, not a must. So no it may not be free. If your opponent knows what is happening then why would they allow you the free mill?
As far as splashing a third color goes, I agree. I run a BUG mill that I'm tweaking and finishing up for competitive Modern that focuses on mill long enough to swing ftw. Feel free to take a look and leave any idea's you have (shameless plug)

Well my mill deck does stuff a little differently. Instead of Blue Sun's Zenith I use Jace's Archivist . It can make my opponent cyclre through ther hand as well as give me a new one since by the time I use it I am holding nothing. And the draying thins out the deck some too. I also really like to use a combination of Hedron Crab and Scrib Nibblers with Terramorphic Expanse or Evolving Wilds or something like that to trigger the landfall ability multiple times in a turn while fetching whatever mana I may need in the current situation. I also like Tome Scour because anything you do on turn 1 can really give you a good jump at the opponent. I know some people think this is dumb but Jace Beleren working together with Liliana Vess can be extremely powerful in this deck allowing you to have a constant draw engine while searching for whatever mill spells you may need and simultaneously thinning out the opponents deck. Anything he has to draw hurts him in the long run.
I would drop Guard Gomazoa . Its a useful card and not a bad choice I just think Royal Assassin would serve you better. If I were personally running that deck in addition to keeping some of what I wrote in mind if I were you I would consider dropping at least 2 lands BUT no more then 4. A lot of stuff in this deck is cheap so you dont seriously need 24 lands. The most I have ever run in any mill deck of mine is 22. You might check out my mill deck Miller up! while your at it. I have implemented most of what I am talking about in it.
It is in serious need of updating though. You give me an hour and I will have put the changes in there by then.
