Hello! Welcome to another Primer!

enter image description here

Darien is the EDH Deck I have played for the longest out of the decks I currently have constructed. A very fun and interesting/unique take on Magic - this deck loves taking damage, and often self-inflicts it. The catch is that more often than not, whatever damage you take is regained instantly two or even threefold via Soul-Sister effects and Darien's ability. Nobody makes the mistake of attacking you more than once, as it only takes one good your way to rally enough troops to return the favor on your turn for lethal damage. If you get hit for anything less than lethal while Darien is out, odds are you ended up netting (+) life and at least that many soliders (or angels! see Divine Visitation )

This is a very strong deck. Once you have a few pieces out people will be scared to attack you, or even interact with you. You have plenty of board-wipes, anthems and replacement soul sister effects that can end the game outright, and they seem to just print more every couple of sets. I've been playing this deck for years, long before Divine Visitation , Anointed Procession , or Elspeth, Sun's Champion were printed, and as you can see, this deck has gotten much better with time.

As usual I will do the best I can to explain some tips/tricks/strategies I have used in my experiences playing this deck card-by-card. Thank you for looking, and if you do like you see, a +1 would be very appreciated!

You WILL enjoy playing Darien if:

  • you like games that get big. Big board-states, big amounts of creatures, big life total swings, etc.
  • you don't mind eventually being the "threat" at the table, and playing politics until that happens to stay out of the spotlight until then
  • you enjoy playing with tokens
  • you like locks and combos, but don't mind that they don't go infinite or win on the spot

You will NOT enjoy playing Darien if:

  • you want fast linear games, consistently
  • you don't like being the arch enemy at the table towards the end of the game
  • you like to win on the spot with an infinite combo or direct kill
  • you don't like tokens, or playing with your life total
