Just some background info. First, this was a deck I used to run, until I heard that half of the cards I was using were going out. So I deconstructed the deck and held onto the cards to see if I can do something better with it. Then I heard of Legacy and Vintage and Modern so I thought I'd try and revive my old deck, with some different touches, and make it into a Modern deck.
This deck came from the idea of two cards that I absolutely fell in love with on first site. Those would be
Grimoire of the Dead
and Life's Finale. So you know where the main brunt of the strategy is.
Also note that of most of the cards that I have, I know I need more of them. I just want to get a basic idea out there so I can get some advice while I'm out card hunting.
The idea is quite simple. Black is to play removal, while green is to ramp up to Life's Finale (and bigger creatures if need be). The strategy is to get as many cards into the graveyard as possible as fodder for the Grimoire. I have some small creatures to keep me alive, such as
Blistergrub
and Perilous Myr. And they make excellent sac fodder for Bone Splinters and
Barter in Blood
. I have some Spread the Disease in here to make the Grimoire play out a bit faster and for added removal.
My main source of ramp comes from Scorned Villager
and Viridian Emissary who also makes nice sac fodder.
For removal I have Bone Splinters,
Barter in Blood
, Spread the Sickness, Tragic Slip, and Murder, plus Black Sun's Zenith and Life's Finale to deal with any sort of problem I may face from opposition (whether it be indestructible, hexproof, anti-sacrifice, and even decks that play with sheer numbers). Also to add to removal I have
Sheoldred, Whispering One
to make them sac and bring back my Grimoire fodder, Reaper from the Abyss who likes to deal double damage if the only creature that dies this turn is something sac'd by Sheodred, and Butcher of Malakir who may help against removal and burn.
I also have Glissa, the Traitor to bring back my Grimoire if it gets blown, or my Perilous Myr for added sac fodder.
As for lands, the main thing is Swamps, but I want enough forests to where I'll draw at least one between turn 1-3. And then I also have
Buried Ruin
just in case they find my Grimoire to be annoying and decide to take it out.
All and any help is appreciated. I would love to see this deck back to it's former glory and free of Standard restrictions.
