I'm leaning towards the Fanatic, just because it can hit harder. It will always deal at least 1, while we might not even be able to use the Elder's ability 100% of the time.

I think we can pass on the Ray at the moment. It's a common, so we should be able to see more later. Plus I doubt that it would be a first pick until the third pack. That gives us some breathing room to see more.

Ignore the Elder's ability for the most part. Just look at him as a 3/2 for 3 with a potential upside. It's not a fantastic card by any means but it's on the curve playable and imo one of the better commons on color for 3cmc.

I think Supersun has good points, and it is crucial to fill out the curve effectively, but I still feel like Fanatic of Mogis is the stronger pick, and the rewards of it outweigh the risks of it.

I also considered Ray of Dissolution, while I do think enchantment removal is a bit over-hyped, it's still not bad by any means, but I don't think it will be better than an aggressive body either.

Good points have been made. Seems the Fanatic is our pick, but let's cast votes to make ot official.

+1 Fanatic of Mogis

+1 Fanatic of Mogis

When you get a pick 6 Red Merchant, red is open, and this can potentially be a Lava Axe to the face on a body for 4. We are still getting strong red from the right (unlike blue or black). I suspect that we'll be getting strong red to the left since we haven't really passed a lot that would be worth investing in red for (unlike white or green). I suspect that we are just going to be getting a lot of red and should expect that red may be our primary color. We can easily enough splash the White and Blue

What I'm expecting in packs 2 and 3 is that we will get some blue and red in pack 2 and some white and red in pack 3. We'll have to see how much blue we get in pack 2 as that could be a good indicator of what the people to our left are running, and in pack 3 we'll still have to see whether or not the people to our right are still drafting blue and black strong. As it stands now I'm fairly convinced that the person to our immediate right is black and the next person over is probably blue, at least from what we've gotten so far. That could very easily change if people are realizing that continuing on with those colors is going to be a trainwreck and switch, but we'll likely have to wait until pack 2 and 3 for that information.

Does anyone else think it might be a good idea to pick up a couple Unknown Shores if we play three colors, even if two are splashes? Obviously I don't mean early in the packs, but around pick 7 in the next pack or two.

I'd personally rather we kept it to 2 colors with MAAAaAybe a single-card splash for a game ender.

Consistency is the key to winning in Limited.

Depends what we are picking the Unknown Shores over.

I'd rather have that amulet, but we'll see if we can actually get one of those to table around to us.

I'd prefer a Burnished Hart to Unknown Shores, but I guess if we can't get it, Shores will have to do.

And of course, I forgot about the Amulet.

3 colors is fine IF the 3rd color is mainly a late game splash like our blue currently is. None of our blue needs to be played early and you can add a couple islands to have a fairly decent statistical chance to get one by turn 5-6 or so.

GoldGhost012 says... #16

Yeah, I forgot about those too. And Opaline Unicorn.

although I can't change the picked card anyway anymore, I want to quickly chime in on the Ray of Dissolution discussion: the Ray is oftentimes way better as aura removal, than as creature removal, especially with bestow. it can so easily result in a 2-for-1.

example: opponent bestows his 2/2 with a nimbus naiad, wants to fly over our dudes with his 4/4 and attacks. we have a 2/3 on the ground, remove the naiad with the ray and proceed to block his 2/2 to death.

imho it's very much mainboard material in a Theros limited environment. I bet that a maximum of 2 of our opponent's decks will have no or only negligible enchantments to be removed, which would mean that in the majority of cases it would be a good choice for the mainboard and in those cases it could still get sided out.

Fanatic is still a good card though. <3 Minotaurs

Looks like our next DDD pick might be postponed a day.

Just means we have more time to debate!

Fanatic vs Ray! GO!

I totally agree with RussischerZar on the aura removal thing. There is a reasonable chance we will see some Rays in the future though, so let's keep our eyes open.

Regarding the next pack, there's gonna be a delay. I've just got the following message from Caley:

One group leader AWOL and cannot locate; did not post his pack to his group yesterday. Waiting 1 day for him to reappear, and to give his group a chance to see and vote on their pack in his absence. Standby for 24 hours.

Hi guys, the site seems to be up again. I've got another message from Caley. The leader who went missing has been found again, so we can resume. However, due to TappedOut's outage, the next pack is again postponed. I'll let you know when it arrivest.

In the meantime, Caley asked us to review packs 5 and 6 (the last two we had) and make for them a priority list for picks 13 and 14 - i.e. sort the cards left in those packs from the most wanted to the least wanted, and Caley will then autodraft the highest possible card for us when the time comes.

October 21, 2013 3:30 a.m.

Supersun says... #21

Did Kaley really want us to prioritize 5 and 6? I mean isn't pack 6 just one card and a basic land?

Anyway I'm looking at this.

Last Breath
Battlewise Valor
Unknown Shores
Opaline Unicorn
Portent of Betrayal
Crackling Triton
Sentry of the Underworld
Staunch-Hearted Warrior
Commune with the Gods

Ray of Dissolution
Lagonna-Band Elder
Feral Invocation
Thassa's Bounty
Fate Foretold
Ephara's Warden
Fleshmad Steed
Nylea's Disciple

Dallie says... #22

Yeah that seems odd.

I agree with your list without looking it thoroughly through. The two bottom cards in each pack do indeed seem like the ones we'd be least likely to run.

October 21, 2013 4:56 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #23

Supersun did a good job but I'd actually value the Opaline Unicorn over Unknown Shores, because although it takes a deck slot, it's also ramp.

October 21, 2013 5 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #24

While Unknown Shores is kind of negative ramp, if you have to use it for other mana.

October 21, 2013 5:01 a.m.

Dallie says... #25

I think that the chances we'll see both Unicorn and Shores that late, is rather slim. Rather than that, I think we'll see one or the other (or a third card entirely) and a basic land.
