+1 Blood-Toll Harpy

So black will probably be open next round while red and white (possibly blue) won't? Gah, people confuse me.

Actually, I think someone somewhat near to our left is that B/W guy. It's the only thing I can think of that makes sense since if he were to our right I can't see him picking the ox or the bear over the harpy. If he is closer to our left though he might have picked one of the more powerful red or green cards in the pack as a potential splash or to keep things open in case the B/W doesn't work out.

+1 Harpy

I am somewhat sad to see our other colors drying up with playables so early.

+1 Harpy

Because flying. Bus this deck is seriously going to need a focus fairly early in the next pack. We're all over the damn place.

We have a combination of Heroic triggers, bombs, and Minotaurs, and now probably a Harpy. I wouldn't say we're all over the place, but that we have a good place to pick where we want to go.

October 28, 2013 9:18 a.m.

I'm not super worried yet, just a little anxious. We're going to need to find a niche at some point or we're just going to be half-decent-cards-thrown-together guy.

October 28, 2013 9:33 a.m.

Absinthman says... #7

Half-decent-cards-thrown-together-plus-a-few-minotaurs-guy to be precise.

Yeah we will need a focus fairly early. I think I'm not.exaggerating when I say that pack 2, pick 1 is going to be damn important and that we might expect quite a discussion if the pack is at least half decent.

I've gone ahead and sent our pick to Caley.

We took Ray, not Mogis's Marauders

Right. Corrected.

Pack 1 has been finished by autodrafting. We can expect Pack 2, Pick 1 quite soon.

October 29, 2013 3:53 a.m.

Dallie says... #12

Actually some OK, autodrafts.

Let's hope we open huge bombs in Pack 2 and 3

We've got a pretty interesting pack here, and as I've suspected. We have some decision making to do, as we can go in quite a few directions from here. Unfortunatelly, I'm in a middle of something right now, so I'll take a proper look at it later.

NOTE: We've been given one extra day for this pick. Deadline is Wednesday midnight.

October 29, 2013 4:15 a.m.

Supersun says... #14

Geez, we might actually need that extra day.

I think the first thing to do is review the signaling information we have so far.

In terms of the best card in the pack, it's Phalanx Leader, especially with the enablers we already have.

But we need to review what information we have about the people to our left and right since if we are surrounded on both sides by heavy white drafters I'm not sure I want to enter a drafting fight that will be fiercer then trying to buy turboman on black friday.

October 29, 2013 4:22 a.m.

Absinthman says... #15

I agree. That extra day's gonna come in handy.

Dallie says... #16

I think we should take a moment to decide which kind of deck we're running. It might be kind of early, but obviously it's going to have a huge impact on the rest of our picks.

October 29, 2013 5:20 a.m.

Supersun says... #17

That largely depends what colors we are planning on running which depends on what our opponents are running.

Red and White tend to be more aggro and midrange while Green, Blue, and Black tend to be more mid to late game. Obviously not set in stone, but the majority of decks in those colors tend to be towards those speeds.

RussischerZar says... #18

At our glorious leader: can you lower the amount of Overlords to 50, so we can at least catch a glimpse of our curve on the right? It won't change the color pie anyway.

October 29, 2013 6:42 a.m.

Absinthman says... #19

@RussischerZar: How about I change them to Progeniti? They're CMC 10, so they won't mix with any playables in our curve and will be easy to disregard.

October 29, 2013 7:31 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #20

Yep, that's why I used them last time for our group :)

So, at the moment we have:

  • 4 good white cards plus a very, very good uncommon in this pack
  • 4 red cards, two to three of which are mainboard material, plus a potentially splashable Destructive Revelry in this pack
  • 0 green, lets disregard this color for now
  • 4 blue cards, two of which are great, the other two are rather filler or dependant on color combination, plus a potential very good uncommon in this pack
  • 2 black cards but they're rather filler material, plus a potential super solid removal in this pack

It seems at the moment we kind of have a three-way split between white, blue and red, although white and blue seem dominant from their power-perspective. A Portent of Betrayal could be splashed for, depending on the fixing also the Stoneshock Giant. A Borderland Minotaur not so much.

I think we should go white as a main color with blue as secondary with maybe a splash of red and try to keep it heroic.

Based on this, my vote goes to...
+1 Phalanx Leader.

October 29, 2013 7:51 a.m.

Supersun says... #21

The only reason I'm not throwing an instant +1 at Leader is because of how heavily white has been drafted so far. If we take Leader we are running white as a primary color for better or for worse, and we're going to have to force white as badly as if we opened a P1 Bombwalker.

In terms of the safest pick, that probably goes to the Emissary. Another really easy card to splash in with our Triton's and SGR

That being said, if we have ANY intention of running white we realistically need to draft that Leader as not taking it is about the biggest flag that could could send to our left that we aren't interested in White so please move on in and choke us out in P3.

I'm leaning towards the leader so far just because we already have some amazing heroic enablers, and we can't afford to completely give up white which passing this will likely do come pack 3. I'm just worried that we aren't realistically going to see any other white heroic aggro cards since it seems to be very popular at the table atm.

October 29, 2013 8:12 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #22

Well, we have been getting many whites from our right (not sure if I'm telling the right directions here) so far, which means that we might not be getting as many in this pack from our left. BUT that also means that it's even more likely to get good whites from the right in pack three. I'll still say we should draft the Leader and then see what good white and blue cards we can get from our left.

October 29, 2013 8:35 a.m.

Supersun says... #23

We got some great white from our right early on, but the reason I'm concerned is that towards the end of the first pack some of the cards we were getting passed and what was being taken was hinting that the people to our right possibly switched into right mid pack.

That being said, it's probably not a great idea to look too far into late pack signaling since that's only really indicative of a splash at best and could easily be changed depending on what they open pack 2.

What do we remember from pack 1. Blue was choked pretty quickly. We got strong white up until pick 4, and we have enough white that we are probably going to want to run it in our final deck.

The only thing I disagree with atm is that I suspect that our deck is going to end up with white as our main color with red as our secondary and blue as our splash. We've seen from he previous pack that red is really open and we haven't passed much along to our left to believe that it won't be open in this pack as well.

October 29, 2013 8:53 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #24

These are all good arguments. I have nothing to add other than Leader looks good and to be wary of picking for full-on aggro rather than midrange aggro.

October 29, 2013 9:34 a.m.

There are 3 cards in this pack that are first-pick material:

Hero's Downfall
Thassa's Emissary
Phalanx Leader

We have picks already in all three of those colors, so we can't immediately hate out one of them. In this case, I say we go to good 'ol BREAD.

Hero's Downfall is definitely removal at its finest. We will not see a better R for bread in the entire rest of the draft. The only thing we should be taking over this card is some sort of bomb.

Are either the Phalanx Leader or Thassa's Emissary worth calling "bombs"? My gut instinct tells me that neither of those cards are quite good enough to make me want to pass up unconditional removal for anything we'll have to worry about in this format.
