@Supersun: Ragnapocalgeddon rocks big time. +milion to that!

That would be great. Since Theros has been released only recently, I doubt anybody here has extensive experience drafting it. We will most certainly benefit from this kind of brainstorming.

Personally I've only done one draft of 3x Theros and two sealed events so far. I can't emphasise enough how much I like black in this format. Notable black commons are Pharika's Cure, Read the Bones, Lash of the Whip (Rather expensive removal but I've found it quite useful), Grey Merchant of Asphodel (Great for monoblack), Boon of Erebos (Cheap trick that can destroy a big threat, also wrecks opponents if combined with Heroic creatures. At pre-release, I had a ridiculous luck pulling two Agent of the Fates), Cavern Lampad can also be very useful.

Also a general note: Everything that says "scry" is better than it seems. Of course, there are premium scry cards like Magma Jet where there is no arguing about its strength, but other cards that seem unimpressive at first can actually perform well because of scry.

General note no. 2: Enchantment removal almost equals creature removal in this format and is sometimes even better because it can get rid of Bestowers which would otherwise stick to the field. It is also often a two-for-one. Ray of Dissolution turned the tides for me several times at my last FNM draft.

Also, The Devout Clans of Sedge Scorpion is a reference to one of my decks. It uses the supreme power of Sedge Scorpion, the most powerful being on Theros, to bust out large attackers fast.

@Supersun: By the way, why is GureiSeion so afraid of you?

Because he thinks of good deck names.

October 10, 2013 7:29 a.m.

I'll plus one for RagnapocalJokulhaups or however it's spelled. I would suggest seeing if it can be re-spelled to flow off the tongue better.

What I've noticed with Theros is that three types of decks seem to work:

1:Super fast, aggressive red decks. These have to be crazy fast to stand a chance, but the early pressure usually ends the game quickly.
2:Late-game, removal heavy decks. If you kill everything and then drop a bomb, you usually win in Limited.
3:Well-curved decks full of Bestow. Never underestimate Bestow as a mechanic. I've straight-up lost to Favored Hoplite because my opponent bestowed it three times and I couldn't deal with it. When you curve out just right, games get disgusting.

Granted, much of that experience comes from Sealed, so it's hard to say how the draft environment is going to work.

My vote for deck name is ether for "Ragnarok... No Wait, Wrong Culture" or "Your Ad Could Have Been Here" btw I don't think it's so important, decks get almost always referred by team leader so no big deal in choosing a name.I've been busy at work lately so I didn't have the chance to go through the new theros cards. I'll try to make up for it in the weekend

Ragnapocalgeddon

Ragnarok

Apocalypse

Armageddon

Pretty easy to spell if you know where the names come from lol

I haven't had a chance to draft Theros yet, but I made sure to do a little homework.

From what I've heard....

The format tends to be kind of slowerish. While aggressive decks are possible the game generally really start until 3 mana, but from that point on you better be dropping relevant cards otherwise you'll get obliterated.

It's a format with not very many removal options, but instead a lot of combat tricks.

It's a format where we shouldn't expect to throw in as many colors as our 3xDGM decks. 2 colors with a splash, not 3 colors and maybe throw in a 4th for good measure.

I was in Gurei's group last time, and a good portion of the madness of our deck came from my head. I mean I don't think any other groups included 5 cluestones in their deck or anything like that, and despite how crazy our deck looked it was one game away from taking first.

And just to annoy GureiSeion, I am going to link his name at the end of my post.

It's nice to know someone else on this team comes up with crazy ideas.

Ragnapocalgeddon is cool, but it's really hard to spell. I tried three times before giving in to copy and paste.

My favorite names are Ragnapocalgeddon, WMGs, Ragnarok... No Wait, Wrong Culture, and Schrodinger's Gods, in no particular order.

Hmm, it would be interesting if all 8 of us do a few 3x Theros Draft sims before we start this to get a feel of the cards.

Would require quite a bit of coordination though D:

My simulated draft is on my profile page. I can't link it for some reason. Quite a powerful cardpool in my opinion. If our draft goes this way, I'll be happy.

Hey guys! Riceeman here! I'm from the south west of England, and my favourite format of MtG is Drafting! I'd like to think I've started to get kind of reasonable at it - I'm 28 wins and 5 losses in my last 10 drafts, winning 7 of those drafts, so yeah. :P I'm sure this'll be fun!

October 11, 2013 2:29 a.m.

Hey!I look forward to discussing this, sounds super fun!!Also I vote shrodingers God for the team name!

If you use Schrodinger, please spell his name correctly with an umlaut :P

And I'd say Schrodinger's Heroes would be a better name than his gods.

I know the premise is the same (the heroes are neither alive nor dead until observed (by the opponent)), but I think it fits better with the heroes than with the gods.

October 11, 2013 5:11 a.m.

We could always name our deck GoldenPalace.com.

Absinthman says... #20

@RussischerZar: I think I tried using umlaut but TappedOut was so perplexed that it didn't show it in the end. I agree with you on the account of Heroes. It even sounds better.

What are your thoughts on Schrodinger's Heroes, everyone? I like it, but as I see our discussion, I also see support for Ragnapocalgeddon. I hereby call a voting session. Everyone, please +1 your prefered team name.

For me: +1 Schrodinger's Heroes

P.S.: Yeah, TappedOut indeed doesn't display umlaut...

October 11, 2013 9:53 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #21

Booh, I didn't even notice myself :(
It's very strange, TappedOut doesn't display many characters like the eastern smileys and stuff, I think we should query that or something.

Schrodinger's Heroes +1

October 11, 2013 10:22 a.m.

I'll defer my vote to the boss man. He's the one who gets to pilot it in the end.

October 11, 2013 11:04 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #23

So yaego said we should use html code for umlauts :o

Therefore:
-1 Schrodinger's Heroes
+1 Schrödinger's Heroes

Just came back from tonight's FNM draft. Played a weird UG midrange. Lost in the finals to a superfast RW with Anax and Cymede and a lot of cheap stuff. I made a few observations I'd like to share.

1. Annul is close to broken in this format. I maindecked two of them and when I drew it, I never had to wait for more than 2 or 3 turns for a suitable target.

2. Never underestimate the power of Nimbus Naiad. Had two of them as well. I can't stress enough how powerful it is. In one game, it enabled me to swing for 9 instead of 3 which completely switched the attacker-defender relationship with my opponent.

3. Also, if blue, 4/5 hexproof for 5U, can't remember its name, very hard to kill, perfect target for the aforementioned Nimbus Naiad.

Note to the team: I'll be at my sister's wedding tomorrow, so I won't be online until Sunday, around midday GMT. I'll have my mobile device with me, so technically I'll be online. However I expect my cognitive functions to be severely affected by reckless consumption of various beverages, which will most likely make my input less than relevant anyway. Well, see you later, Schrödinger's Heroes. May your glass of poison never breaks.
