Probably another guardian to sideboard against ridiculously fast aggro and prevent anyone else from siding it against us as that card would hurt us rather badly.

I don't see us running the sandals as we need as many heroic triggers and disruption cards as we can get in those spots.

I'd have to say we should take a second SGR.

Having 2 in our deck will give us a 50% chance of getting one in our hand by turn 6.

I sure wouldn't want to play against a deck that can play a SGR 50% of the time when they hit 6 mana.

Purry is good, but I don't think he really fits our deck's strategy that well since 4 mana is when we want to be dropping an above curve 4 drop, and it would be very rare when we could make him a creature. We don't want to exactly be playing many more creatures after 4cmc as we want to be closing out the game soon (though he does provide a bit of reach).

TT is good, but I don't think we should take a second if blue is only our splash especially since our deck has shaped out to be a bit more aggroy.

SGR seems to be the best choice since it's essentially a bomb as long as you have some level of board presence.

Hi guys, pack 3, pick 1 here. This pack is loaded with stuff. I'm glad we're shipping this to the left, and not to the right. Now, we have an interesting choice here... I think it's either the red God, or another SGR. Both cards are really powerful, but I'm leaning towards Purphoros, because we already have one SGR to splash, we have some amount of red mana symbols which we can further increase in pack 3, and it makes all lowdrops better in late game (remember the discussion about Akroan Crusader...).

But as I've said, this pack is loaded, Gary and Sip for black players, Triton, SGR for blue - craziness... I believe that someone's going to snatch Divine Verdict and Last Breath (which I would love to pick by the way) from us. Realistically, I think the only relevant card that has a chance to wheel for us is Portent of Betrayal. Also, note the absolute lack of green in this pack. I suppose green players to our left will be quite WTF.

Last piece of info: An extra day has been given to us again to process this pick. Deadline is Tuesday midnight (Pacific).

Well, the god is really god err... good. And I think we could actually make him a creature.

+1 Purphoros, God of Absinth

RussischerZar says... #18

He also gives some serious reach in a stalled game.

November 11, 2013 5:26 a.m.

Supersun says... #19

He does give reach in a stalled game, but SGR takes that stalled game and turns it into a blow out in our favor.

Purry would be good if we could reliably turn him into a creature, but if we are being realistic, we can't. 5 devotion is a LOT especially when atm we only have 2 creatures with a double red casting cost. In fact we only have 8 red mana symbols total among our permanents. Do you realistically see us getting 3-4 red creatures and him on the field at the same time routinely? Now how many of those times are we not stomping our opponent already?

You have to look at what you are realistically getting with the god. 4 mana for 2 damage per summoned creature and a 3 mana +1 field pump effect. The turning into a creature effect is win more at best.

It's good. It's not Sea God's Revenge good.

I mean Sea God's Revenge is essentially THE perfect curve topper with the deck we currently have. As long as our creature curve is solid we can ideally drop 2 2-3cmc creatures, 2 4-5cmc creatures then plop SGR down and that's pretty much game as with the creatures we are currently running (especially the 4 drops) that'll allow us to run through 9-10 damage unopposed. If they even somehow manage to survive that. Their board is decimated. They aren't going to simply rebuild in just one turn from a wipe like that.

You have to be careful with gods.

It's very easy to see one and instantly reach for it, but they are HIGHLY overrated. They are a huge hit to tempo when you drop them on turn 4 as you are dropping something that isn't really going to immediately affect the board as opposed to all our 4 drops, and I'm not sure it's a smart idea to take that hit to tempo with the way our deck is looking.

While the god does put the opponent on a pretty decent clock with the 2 damage per creature summoned it's not a bomb. It does not win the game by itself and it really doesn't immediately affect the board the instant it's dropped (though it's affect may add up over time).

Sea God's Revenge in my eyes is essentially a semi-bomb. It doesn't win the game by yourself, you have to actually have a decent curve to preceding it, but it immediately affects the board on the level that most bombs do. I mean as long as you curve out how many times are you realistically going to lose after you successfully cast a SGR? Not very many.

Purphoros, God of the Forge, just can't make that claim imo (though he will help us win a good number of games).

Sea God's Revenge so good. Purphoros probably won't bash in for 6 for us, but he's still good. I will have to wait it out and hear more arguments.

November 11, 2013 8:43 a.m.

If we grab Purples, we still have time to build around him. There will be plenty of red permanents in these packs. He also makes Akroan Crusader REALLY GOOD. Also, many games of Draft tend to stall out, which would give him time to turn himself on.

Don't ever discount his global pump, either. Global, repeatable, buffs are not to be scoffed at.

SGR is a lot more straightforward in its power. You don't have to build around it, but it won't win you the game if there's no meat in the rest of your deck. If we take this then we need some serious muscle to finish off games because we currently lack real bombs.

Pick is still up in the air.

Calling that we see another SGR in the next 3 packs and then have 3 of which we will cut one from the final deck ;P

November 11, 2013 10:18 a.m.

I agree with the sentiment of what RussischerZar is saying. We have probably a 50/50 shot of getting a SGR#2 later in these packs. We won't get another shot at Purples.

And even if we don't get SGR#2, we still have SGR#1.

The sad thing is, I can see whichever one of these cards that we don't pick coming back to bite us.

It almost feels like we need to pick Purphoros because we have almost no answer to him outside of Sea God's Revenge if he's a creature, or Griptide, if, again, he's a creature. He basically has to be a creature for us to answer him, and in a draft, that's not always a guarantee. I feel that Purphoros affects the field a lot longer than SGR.

On the other hand, SGR is an amazing game-finisher. There's probably no better set-up card for an alpha strike outside of Stoneshock Giant, which, surprise, we have one. Even if we don't pick this SGR, echoing what NobodyPicksBulbasaur and RussischerZar said, there's still a chance we'll see another.

With a psuedo-SGR in Stoneshock Giant, I feel that Purphoros is a nice way to bash in some damage, and a way to make Akroan Crusader a one-drop blocker that deals 2 damage when it enters the battlefield. If we really wanted to, we could block something with the Crusader, use Griptide to save it while netting a token, then replay it for another 2 damage and another chump.
