what does cawblade even MEAN. i like he curve of this deck too. Cathedral of War might be a nice card, even with top decking!

It was a tempo deck that used Stoneforge Mystic Jace, the Mind Sculptor the Scars swords, and Batterskull alongside Squadron Hawk . It basically played the hawk, a stoneforge then controlled the game with counter and removal to keep only an equipped Squadron Hawk on the board and swung for wins.

If you want to try to replace SFM you can try using card:Steelshaper's Gift. Then you can run the swords as singletons and add another piece of equipment. This looks like it's gonna play out a lot more like Legacy's Dead Guy Ale, so definitely pack in some more disruption with Tidehollow Sculler , he's cheap. If you have the budget I'd add in Dark Confidant and Path to Exile .

@ivantheterrible I quite like the ideas there, and the idea of making this Dead Guy Ale in Modern sounds awesome. I'll look into it and replace cards here and there to fit a lot of that in. Do you think I should drop the Oust for most disruption or keep them in?

Also I feel like I might/should replace the Knight of Infamy and Knight of Glory for something else. That's 6 more slots in the main open.

For competitive Modern, you'll need Thalia, Guardian of Thraben to stop storm Linvala, Keeper of Silence to stop Splinter Twin and card:Grafdigger's Cage to stop Melira Pod. Leyline of Sanctity will hose red as well. I think the best sword for Modern is Sword of Fire and Ice .

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Linvala, Keeper of Silence are both great ideas, as is card:Grafdigger's Cage. I'll fit them in here and there once I get the chance to work on that. I'm currently only running the cheaper of the swords, as fire and ice is much more expensive.

I like Path a lot more than I like Oust. You're playing an aggro deck with some disruption; ideally the card they want to cast with that free land will have already been plucked from their hand and as you want to close the game out early, the life that they might gain from Oust won't be inconsequential.

That said, I think you need to find a way to maindeck 4 of them. Maybe drop two Smother . You want to connect with your swords every combat phase, and recurring threats like Kitchen Finks will mess that up.

I'll be working on the Path to Exile s. I'll up the Oust count to 4. Thinking on dropping Smother down to just 3. I still need 6 cards for the deck though, so there are open slots.

Lingering Souls keep, drop to three, or drop entirely?

If it's good enough to see play in the Legacy version, it's good enough to see play here! I mean, each card is like a bundle of four Squadron Hawks.

Okay, in it stays! What do you think should fill in the last six or seven(may drop down to 2 smother) spots, as I'm clueless. I was thinking of 3x Knight of Glory and Knight of Infamy each or of the likes (2 mana beaters, orrr 2x Linvala, Keeper of Silence and 4x misc useful 1/2-drop spells.

Sorry I meant 4 Path and drop Oust entirely. I was testing it against Jund and Oust vs Bloodbraid Elf is quite sad. Going to class now but I'll check think of some stuff when I get back.

Liliana of the Veil might be a good addition.

Didn't quite think about bloodbraid. I dropped the oust and replaced them with 3 Condemn for now. I'll continue on trying to get the path. I could also try Journey to Nowhere if condemn does bad in testing.

Liliana of the Veil is good, I'll probably test with her too.

Upon looking around on Gatherer I figure I could throw in Dismember s or Mortify to stop Bloodbraid Elf and his friends.

miracleHat says... #16

Mortify in the sideboard if you run into pesky enchantments. Dismember is normally a good mainboard choice

That's a good thought for the two. Going 2x or 3x(starting with 3x) of each in their respective board.

I love the curve of this deck. It's unfortunate that such a powerful deck can hit so fast, because that puts this as a devastating force in any format it plays. If it's your modern deck, it's brutal, but this has potential in legacy I think. Possibly 2x on the Dismember though. If you don't have the mana open for whatever reason, that 2 life cost can hit hard. Sudden Death could be a good alternative, with the same cost minus the phyrexia symbol. It's only -4/-4 instead of -5/-5 though. It's just a decision if you can afford the life cost over the extra -1/-1. I swear I thought black had better removal than that. Only things I can think of are Doom Blade , Go for the Throat , or Murder . Nice deck so far though.

didin't you spell the name wrong, or was that on purpose?

November 4, 2012 4:28 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #20

@theonyc Lol it was on purpose.

@ChaosRain I can definitely do that. I chose Dismember due to the versatility in it's mana cost compared to non-phyrexian spells. I'm most likely dropping it to 2x main 1x side after more testing. Any thoughts on what to throw in for the 5(6 is 2x Dismember ) open slots?

miracleHat says... #21

you might want to put in [thougtseize] for the Duress . the other swords for the open slots and you might want to try Puresteel Paladin .

November 4, 2012 7:37 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #22

Thoughtseize are 40 dollars a pop, a bit expensive for me. If I had the 160 for a play set, I'd do that.

Puresteel Paladin isn't very useful in the deck. He's nil unless I have artifacts on the field. There are only two swords not in this deck, Sword of Body and Mind and Sword of Fire and Ice , of which only one (fire and ice) is worthwhile. That's 8 artifacts in the deck, causing the paladin to be somewhat useless to the deck.

theonyc says... #23

howabout other non swords like Batterskull (<-it is too slow though)

November 4, 2012 7:56 p.m.

Leaf-steel says... #24

Butterskull is in the side, so it's of no big issue. Keeping it side though. Probably even dropping it. May go into Esper or make another deck that's an Esper version of the deck. Counter spells, Master Transmuter and Treasure Mage and more artifacts.
