Midrange Jund dragon tribal list built to take advantage of Dragon Tempest and Scourge of Valkas. It does well but admittedly hasn't been tested much against Tier 1 modern decks.
Tempest Scourge
I've always wanted to play dragons in modern. This deck has been a project in the works for a few years and has been getting better each time Wizards prints some new dragon themed goodness.
Slumbering Dragon - This card is in here because it's a one drop Dragon. Works well with Scourge and Tempest, slows down aggro decks when played early.
Lightning Bolt - What self-respecting red deck would be complete without at least a couple of these?
Blossoming Defence - Running a couple of these mostly as some help for keeping the Dragons on the field but the card is versatile and could be the trick that wins a game.
Dragon's Hoard - Effective ramp and, more importantly, provides some very consistant card draw in a deck that really needs a way to draw more.
Sarkhan, Fireblood - Sarkhan acts as one more enabler for the deck by providing dragon specific color fixing and card filtering.
Taurean Mauler - It's a dragon (sort of) and a pretty good one at that.
Thunderbreak Regent - Without a doubt my favorite card from the Dragons of Tarkir set. It's ability can be very punishing for opponents that rely on a removal heavy stratagy.
Nicol Bolas, the Ravager
- It's powerful early and late in a game as a creature and I have no doubt flipping it would be game endingly powerful.
Sideboard:
Anger of the Gods - Sometimes, it turns out, Pyroclasm doesn't finish the job so a copy of Anger can go a long way.
Blood Moon - It's a great card and it's nice to have a second copy if someone is running an excessive amount of non-basic lands (Tron players). This deck can be shifted into a nearly mono-red build after sideboarding thus making Blood Moon unexpected and very strong.
Destructive Revelry - This is a card to side in against artifact or enchantment heavy decks or decks that require a specific card of either type. The choice on what to side out depends on what they are doing probably pull out some combination of Draconic Roar/Dragon Tempest for most matchups.
Stormbreath Dragon - A quick glance at the modern meta will highlight that white is all over the place and is often included for the removal it provides, frequently in the form of Path to Exile, and thus protection from white becomes very relevant.
Pyroclasm - If someone is flooding the board with goblins, spirits, or humans this is a go-to card. It's going to be more useful than Draconic Roar when you need to remove a half-dozen creatures.
Dampning Sphere - More hate for the tron and storm match-ups. Works really nicely in tandem with blood moon.
Grafdigger's Cage - This is mostly an answer to Collected Company decks, although, It does stop some of the graveyard strategies across the modern format.
Vandalblast - Plenty of Artifact based strategies out there, this allows you to slow them down early or really hit hard if the game runs late. Even against not artifact focus strategies this can take out an annoying Aether Vial or Ensnaring Bridge.
Commonly Recommended:
They're not off the table but if you suggest one include a strong argument as to why I should be running it.
The most common recommendation is ramp cards Arbor Elf, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Utopia Sprawl, etc... these cards are fine but I'm not looking to replicate the tried and true "ramp into dragons" strategy. If that's the strategy you're looking for I'd recommend How to Wake Your Dragon by Emrakool as it uses that strategy to good effect and could easily be shifted to the modern format.
Dragonlord's Servant - Great card, too slow. It's not Dragonspeaker Shaman.
Browbeat - I tried this out while searching for card draw, it's really just for 5 damage.
Crucible of Fire - This seems strong on paper but it just doesn't do enough by itself for .
Current Thoughts: After having this deck (mostly) on hold for the last couple of years I finally decided to revisit this deck after the release Core Set m19. The set brought Sarkhan, Fireblood, Dragon's Hoard, and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager
which was enough for me to see if I could upgrade this old deck.
That's it. I'm sure there are things I've left unaddressed and feel free to let me know. Thanks for your help!
