Wow. 3 more utvaras? that is a ton of really heavy CMC cards even with Nykthos. Can you give me a break down of how that might work?

Quick question about that shrine to Nykthos. Its a LEGENDARY LAND, so, does that mean you can only have one out at a time? Anyway, definitely add the stormbreath dragons, haste, pro white, and can be monstrous. try and get another scourge of Valkas, my deck doesn't work with out them. and maybe mainboard the Hellkite Tyrants, Theros has a few awesome artifacts coming out, like the 8/8 colossus that becomes an 18/18-wouldnt that be nice to steal? uummm, what else.. oh yeah, new one drop enchantment that gives a creature haste and trample, think its called Messangers Speed or something, replaces ring of Valkas in my opinion. overall, looks good +1 from me mate.

AussieBloke: yes, any legendary permanent follows the legend rule(s). which now means that both you and your opponent can have a legendary with the same name out, just not more than 1 per player.

Alright, so this was my attempt to move the deck into post rotation standard ready. Tear it up and let me know what to fix. Personally I feel like the mana curve is all out of tune and should be fixed.

Wondering if the dragon mantles are necessary. Maybe add the Ordeal of Phourophus for power and burn.

The main reason I like Dragon Mantle better than Ordeal of Purphoros is because it pays for itself instantly with the card draw, which will mean it won't hurt as much if they hit the creature its on with removal. The other reason I like it more than Oreal of Purphoros is that it's one mana cheaper and adds just as much to the devotion to red (for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx). Sure fire breathing is pointless on Hatchling and Scourge, but I think using it on Dragon Egg makes up for that, I think it would be pretty fun to block a 3/3 with a Dragon Egg w/Dragon Mantle, pump Dragon Egg to a 3/2 both kill each other then you get a 2/2 Dragon token with fire breathing out of the deal (even if that senario is unlikely to happen very often). Maybe you can change my mind about Ordeal of Purphoros though?

The reason I suggested against dragon mantle was because if you have two creatures with fire breathing, you generally only need to pump up one with all available mana, unless theres blockers involved. The ordeal gives consistent power, plus burn for three damage to a blocker or the face. Imagine a world where dragon hatchlings get more powerful just for attacking. Isn't it beautiful? It can be real. Just my thoughts anyway. And I just noticed that a hatchling with the three counters from ordeal will survive Anger of the Gods. Think about it anyway.

Ordeal gets sacked anyway so I guess it wouldn't be a big deal if it gets hit with removal I'm going to try it both ways.

What about Hammer of Purphoros over the Messenger's Speed ? I don't like enchantments that give haste, they have such a limited usability window in game. Trample is pretty good, though, so maybe just a thought.

I really like that Messenger's Speed gives haste and trample for 1 red mana, however after you brought that up I realized that I don't think I will need 4 of them in my deck. I also don't think I will need more than 2 Hammer of Purphoros, I do think I'll like having 2 of each though. Thanks for the help!

I built a deck like this not too long ago before Theros spoilers that was super fun and pretty competitive (though after first win it was easily beaten due to giving everything away). Not sure if it'll still be as applicable since we'll be loosing a lot of good dragons when Ininstrad drops with only one replacement, but we'll see. One thing that really helped this deck out for me was a splash of blue for Warden of Evos Isle . While it seems fringe and unplayable, most people didn't bother dealing with it on the first game because it's pretty mediocre. And after the first game they dealt with it quickly to avoid the cost reduction for your dragons, which is fine cause you'd rather them use removal there than on your dragons. I also felt that Warden was a much better 3-drop than Dragon Egg where while it does add to your dragon count, if falls short with Utvara Hellkite and it doesn't do what Dragons want to be doing which is bashing face in. Splashing blue also gives you access to Hypersonic Dragon which I feel is a pretty powerful dragon in a deck like this as well as some draw spells like Divination . I'm excited to see how this kind of deck will work as it's something that is overlooked but pretty powerful in its own right. Good luck with the list. I hope BotG has a better two-drop dragon than Dragon Hatchling to make this deck more FNM viable, but I'm not holding my (fire)breath.

I really like Dragon decks ever since I started playing MTG, only that this is my first time to have one of my own (since I can't afford them way back). I built mine with Green ramps using Elvish Mystic and Sylvan Caryatid (see here: Dragons of Purphoros) along with Xenagos, The Reveler . I considered using Hypersonic Dragon to let me cast instant speed Anger of the Gods or Mizzium Mortars when needed. I one time included an Altar's Reap to sacrifice the Dragon Egg . Not only it gave me a firebreathing dragon, but it also allowed me to draw 2 cards.

Anyway, should this pull-off nicely, its a real murder especially if both Scourge of Valkas and Utvara Hellkite are on the field.

Really like this deck. I love dragons and using them in tournament. Lately, I've had to sideline a lot of them, however, because they are no longer standard. If you don't mind, I'd like to try this deck out cuz it looks like it'd be fun. :3

It would be great if you tried it out! I haven't had the chance to play this against anyone yet so I would like to hear how it works for you.

Felhide Spiritbinder , may be an option?

February 28, 2014 3:43 p.m.

CSchademann says... #16

maybe, I can't say I know if that would fit or not. It's worth putting it in and play testing at the very least.

Have you tested this deck already?

Arnonator says... #18

I think you really need to play green for ramp. Unless you really, really, really want this to be FULL dragons, which it isn't atm, you should play Sylvan Caryatid in that deck. Market Festival is also a really nice option, because it ramps you from four mana to six mana.Playing green allows you to play the Forgestoker Dragon , Bow of Nylea combo... Which is just silly.

While that is a great idea and would likely work very well, I'm really wanting to try and keep this mono colored. I like the thought though! thanks for the suggestions.

July 21, 2014 1:01 a.m.

i would mainboard the Stormbreath Dragon s. That card is just insanely good

Just a suggestion but you should get a Storm Crow .

July 21, 2014 1:05 a.m.

CSchademann says... #22

yes and yes. I'm going to try out Act on Impulse and Crowd's Favor both with and without Stormbreath, just need to find the balance for the curve. also, need me some Storm Crow...

I like it. Rough around the edges in the competitive scene but its actually fairly competitive overall for a dragon deck

what do you think of Burning-Tree Emissary for devotion I mean on turn two if you hit 2 burning trees and a Generator Servant then nykthos could blow up for 5 on turn three and sacking Gen servant would give you 7 mana to work with that could be divided to play two hasty dragons. just an idea. really like the deck though! +1

Hi mate, I'm rather new here (and MTG) but I do have a silly question why is this deck labelled standard but in the information at the side does it say that you have two banned cards?
