Nightmare kitty

She's fluffy and soft
The smoochiest pet
Devourer of worlds
Falthis, the Cat

You might like this deck if:

  • You think cats are awesome
  • You like being the board police
  • You want to be able to win in a few different ways
  • You enjoy the suffering of others
  • You are a hipster who likes unpopular commanders (<100 decks on EDHREC)
  • You love the spicy flavour of Rakdos

You probably won't enjoy this deck if:

  • You play against a lot of decks that don't need creatures to win
  • You like to interact at instant speed all the time
  • Your playgroup doesn't appreciate their creatures being repeatedly removed
The beauty of this partner combo is that you have both removal and a win con right in the command zone. Even if your commanders get removed, Jeska comes back more loyal than ever. Falthis gives Jeska deathtouch, making her basically kill three creatures of your choice per turn. Jeska enables her (and any other threat) to deal massive damage in a single swing. However, this is not a pure Voltron build - that's just one of the ways this deck can win.

The strategy here is to police the board with Jeska/Falthis while you draw and tutor your way into a win con.

In the early game, you should try and get one of your card-draw engines into play - Dark Confidant, Conspiracy Theorist, Phyrexian Arena or Mindblade Render. You can also go for an early Vilis, Broker of Blood with a lucky hand of something like Reanimate and Entomb, which, btw, works at any point in the game.

Mid game is when you should be looking to threaten a win or land a major value/combo piece like Black Market, Neheb, the Eternal, Sword of Truth and Justice or similar. A quick knock-out with Grafted Exoskeleton is certainly possible here, as long as you untap with Jeska and a creature with power 2 or higher on board.

Late game, you will be looking to win through infect (Grafted Exoskeleton) & Jeska's 0 ability, or infinite mana (Animate Dead + Worldgorger Dragon or Storm-Kiln Artist + Chain of Smog) which lets you recast Jeska and -X the opponents. Because the WGD combo leaves you fairly exposed, I’ve included some hand hate like Thoughtseize, Oppression or Sire Of Insanity and a few stax pieces to protect your turn, like Contamination and Blood Moon effects.
  • I like decks that start early and maintain pressure throughout the game. To start early, you need decent ramp - I haven't included the expensive rocks, but that's always an option. I've kept Blood Pet and Skirk Prospector, because they are cool early or can be discarded to something like Conspiracy Theorist or Oppression later. Furthermore, as this is a permanent-based deck, acceleration pieces like Dark Ritual, Sandstone Needle and Peat Bog make sense, because they allow you to start generating value earlier on.
  • The reanimation package is super effective, don't switch it out whatever you do. You will understand once you get a turn 2 Vilis.
  • The removal package is limited, but not so much to make us lose our ability to deal with enchantments (Feed the Swarm), artifacts (Vandalblast, Rakdos Charm, Abrade) or lands (like Maze of Ith)/other permanents (Chaos Warp). I've left the most powerful tools to deal with creatures there too (Toxic Deluge), just in case Jeska is massively hated out of the game.
  • Sword of Truth and Justice is amazing, because it pumps Falthis/whoever else and also proliferates loyalty counters on Jeska. Similarly,Shadowspear may also be a good addition.
  • Tutors give this deck consistency, take them out and I can't vouch for any of this janky pile of cat poop.
