@SranWrap, I thought about Force of Savagery briefly, and even considered Phyrexian Dreadnought for a non-standard version of this deck, but decided it had enough creatures. Riftsweeper has been tempting, as a way to get back a copy of Death's Shadow from exile.

You dont have to put a card in the graveyard with Jarad's Orders .

@armithel: Correct, with the wording of "...up to..." finding a second card for the graveyard is optional with Jarad's Orders . Every Death's Shadow I can get in the graveyard to scavenge is a bonus.

This deck relies on at least 3 cards being available to really be deadly... Varolz, the Scar-Striped in play to scavenge Death's Shadow from the graveyard, preferably onto either of the three best attacker: the unblockable Tormented Soul , Lotleth Troll with trample, or Vampire Nighthawk the flyer with death touch.

Another common strategy with varolz is to play Torpor Orb and strong, low cost creatures like Hunted Horror, Eater of Days and such. In that way, you have a secondary wincon, though it will be more expensive.

I think Grim Flayer would be really good here, cool deck!

Thanks skoobysnackz! Grim Flayer is perfect for this deck. I love Lotleth Troll but for the same mana cost Grim Flayer will provide a lot more control. I haven't played MTG since Modern Masters 2013 so I have a lot of cards to look through if I'm going to start working on decks again. Thanks again for the card suggestion! I'll definitely work it into the deck.

I don't really see why using Tormented Soul.

Wouldn't Slitherhead be more useful?

Tormented Soul occupies the 1 CMC slot instead of Slitherhead because it is unblockable. I want creatures who are most likely to do player damage, to buff with counters scavenged from Death's Shadow.

Winding constrictor, Hardened scales?

Like your deck by the way. +1 surely!

Your build seems pretty mama intensive. You might want to consider Rishkar, Peema Renegade, Gyre Sage, Satyr Wayfinder, and/or Slitherhead. Running any of these should allow you to cut some lands so you have fewer dead draws.

Force of Savagery is my favorite "combo" with varolz outside of shadow, could be worth a look.

Take out the Corpsejack Menace too high mana cost for modern. Maybe replace with Force of Savagery. Also I love this deck! Maybe through in Phyresis?

Also, maybe a few mana dorks to speed things up, this thing wants to go off pretty fast. Uktabi Drake is one of the few one drops in green plus it has flying, great target for counters if you want to go off in a single turn or if you can afford the echo cost.

Hi. Not sure if you'd want to go this direction, but Tainted Strike might make for an interesting addition.

Cool idea, but I think you go too far on the counters. At some point it treads into win-more territory and out of being well-rounded. You need more interaction in modern. Drop Bioshift for Fatal Push, and even your whole sorcery package for Abrupt Decay and Maelstrom Pulse. I see what you're going for with Jarad's Orders, but a 4 cmc "do nothing the turn you play it" is too slow for modern, so is Corpsejack Menace unfortunately. Frankly, the difference between 13 and 26 counters on beatstick is irrelevant. I'd run Satyr Wayfinder so that you're more likely to have fuel to scavenge, and/or Grisly Salvage.

March 8, 2017 4:38 p.m.

you should replace your Tormented Souls with Silhana Ledgewalkers it's a much better target. A hexproof flyer is tough to deal with. It may even remove your need for Bioshift and free up 3 spaces in your deck.

Silhana Ledgewalker might be a good alternative I agree. Would prevent removal that Tormented Soul is vulnerable to.

i would switch nighthawk for a Vengevine. Take a look at my RBG vengevine deck which is fairly similar to yours. perhaps look at Relentless Dead.I wouldnt switch Lotleth Troll for Grim Flayer as lotleth has alot of utility and can even ensure flayers delirium comes online.

I think this deck is great! Also it could be super budget if you just replace Death's Shadow with Force of Savagery, and your dual lands with cheaper ones like Llanowar Wastes and Temple of Malady. You should make that deck and link it to this one!

I agree with several previous comments -- out with Bioshift, Corpsejack, Jarad's orders, treasured find, vines of vastwood. They're "win more" conditions, where you've already won by the time you get the combo online -- instead, dedicate those slots to cards that help you win games you might not otherwise win. I would, however, keep in Lotleth Troll, contrary to some above suggestions.

I would put in Abrupt Decay, Fatal Push, Force of Savagery, maybe even Lupine Prototype or Pharika, God of Affliction (in SB for reanimator matchups). Blossoming Defense or Destined/Lead should be easy defense for your beaters instead. Finally, Momentous Fall for card draw if you need it. Hope that helps!

How does it do at an FNM or something?

This deck needs ramp. Your 3- and 4-drop creatures are crucial to the deck's strategy, but a lot of decks will just kill you before you can get the strategy going. Adding 4x Birds of Paradise would do wonders for speeding up your clock as well as mana-fixing, and you only have 4 cards in the deck that are viable Turn 1 plays right now. Not to mention they're flying and consequently synergize well with Bioshift in late game.

Grisly Salvage would be really strong in this deck. I would run it at least as a 3-of. Cantrip tutoring the creature or land that you need (at instant speed no less) while also filling up your graveyard is exactly what this deck wants to be doing.

Good luck with it and happy brewing. +1
