@marioman77 : Most french commander decks in my area are more quick agro/voltron decks. Fancy combo decks don't really see much play as Sadistic Sacrament is in a lot of decks that run black.

Testing changes :

Withering Boon -> All Is Dust
Imp's Mischief -> Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
Xenic Poltergeist -> Karn, Silver Golem
Midnight Banshee -> Wurmcoil Engine

Thoughts or suggestions for other replacements?

Not sure on the Mikaeus, the Unhallowed or All Is Dust at the moment. So other options for them are more than welcome. Wurmcoil Engine has been benched longer than I thought he would so I'm trying to fit him in again.

Trying to keep Liquimetal Coating because I'm changing out Xenic Poltergeist for Karn, Silver Golem so the land destruction is still there, but Karn, Silver Golem can also remove multiple equipment during the declare blockers phase so I take less damage, and can also easily remove multiple equipment that give hexproof/shroud (I've had a few issues of Swiftfoot Boots + Lightning Greaves on annoying creatures like Jenara, Asura of War).

How do you deal with grave-based decks like Karador, Ghost Chieftain? I'm not seeing any grave-hate...

There's Bojuka Bog...

I'm fine with grave-based decks. In multiplayer, they generally leave me alone because I can help fuel them. However, I can also utilize their focus and resources with Rise of the Dark Realms, Beacon of Unrest, and Geth, Lord of the Vault. To disrupt them, I have Bojuka Bog, Sadistic Sacrament, Mimic Vat, and Duplicant.

This is another reason why I don't run Liliana Vess. It will put a target on my head because I'm showing that in X turns I can take all the creatures they have been dumping and use those against them. Rise of the Dark Realms is a sorcery so it won't be as obvious.

If you drop Lili and immediately do her -2 nobody is going to think you're going for her final.

And if you drop Lili and don't immediately use her -2 you're just silly and need to have your planeswalker privileges suspended immediately.

@sonnet666, And you shouldn't be playing MtG if your thinking is so narrow-minded. My play group has a few people whose deck is about half-filled with tutors and insta-win combos. So these cards are now quite common:
Stranglehold, Aven Mindcensor, Ob Nixilis, Unshackled, Slaughter Games, Praetor's Grasp, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Sadistic Sacrament, Psychic Surgery, etc.

You always need to consider the situation before doing something. Yes, Liliana Vess's -2 is usually the best play when u play her, but if you're already set on plays, your opponent has one of the mentioned cards (or any other way to almost make you shuffle, like Ghost Quarter), or you have something to shuffle your own library (like Armillary Sphere or Expedition Map), then the -2 is not the best option. Don't say you should pop the Armillary Sphere or Expedition Map on your turn before you play Liliana Vess's -2, because that's an even worse decision . This deck plays like control, you leave mana open for answers and to make your opponent hesitant. You don't waste it just to potentially set up for a next turn and give your opponents freedom of thought.

Hey cool deck! I have a n00b question though... If my opponent is controlling someone with protection from black and I target that creature with an artifact, will the ability of Horobi, Death's Wail still trigger?

March 5, 2015 8:08 p.m.

rob_shifflett says... #13

Yes NsR_Dari. Horobi's ability is a triggered replacement effect that does not target, therefor not affected by protection.

Virlym says... #14

Thanks rob_shifflett for answering NsR_Dari's question in my absence. That's why most of the reusable triggers come from colorless sources (13 colorless, 6 black). However, I still need things like Duplicant to get rid of indestructible creatures, Predator, Flagship to get rid of things if I don't have Horobi, Death's Wail on the field (maybe due to Iona, Shield of Emeria), and Damnation or Arcane Lighthouse to get rid of shroud or hexproof creatures.

Dark Ritual - for obvious reasons.

Vampire Hexmage - utility that can double as removal.

Dark Depths - since you already have Thespian's Stage and possibly Vampire Hexmage.

I don't need Dark Ritual. There's nothing I need to ramp into that badly to use one spot of the 99 for 2 extra mana for one turn. This plays more like control, so I can take my time and use mana rocks if needed.

Dark Depths is just a 20/20 flying dude that takes 30 mana to invest in. It doesn't provide any other help to me unless I have Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth out, and I would still need to dump 30 mana into a creature while losing a land. There are too many forms of land destruction (and now exile effect because my playgroup knows I can make any target effect into normal removal for them) for it to see it through until the end.

My Thespian's Stage usually becomes a copy of Cabal Coffers or Tower of the Magistrate. I benefit more if I copy someone else's Dark Depths anyway because then I would only lose 1 land instead of 2.

If there was more of a planeswalker-based deck in my local meta, I would consider running Vampire Hexmage. However, there aren't too many things that stack counters that require attention, and she becomes a delayed removal spell only when Horobi, Death's Wail is out.

This is a really well built deck. +1

April 28, 2015 3:40 p.m.

+1 from me, Horobi is an absolute delight.

I find it amusing how he turns Maze of Ith from a mild deterrent to "NO TRESPASSING, VIOLATORS WILL BE SHOT, SURVIVORS WILL BE SHOT AGAIN"

I'm making a much simpler (and cheaper) Horobi deck now. Love your ideas. Unfortunately you set a high bar and now I have to buy another Mikaeus, the Unhallowed =(

Baton of Morale might be better than Trip Noose.

Aphotic Wisps kills and draws a card. Word of Binding kills x creatures. Ashes to Ashes and Sick and Tired kill 2 each.

No Rest for the Wicked can save your own creatures after one of the many boardwipes you have. .

Virlym says... #22

Thanks for the upvotes HeroInMyOwnMind and Pornman

@carpecanum : You don't need Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, he's just a solid card that has a lot of benefits, but is by no means required.

I used to run Baton of Morale, but it got swapped for Sacred Armory. They have the same effect when Horobi, Death's Wail is out, but Sacred Armory is useful when he's not out (hence the swap, and why Trip Noose remained).

Of the 4 "removal" spells you mentioned, only Ashes to Ashes is really worth it. The other 3 are substantially weaker without Horobi, Death's Wail.

No Rest for the Wicked is a decent card if you have a board you really want after a wipe or have some enchantment recursion (or a way to make it a creature so that it recurs itself). However, I don't really care about having a lot of creatures, so the reusable spot recursion from Volrath's Stronghold and Phyrexian Reclamation are more than enough most of the time.
