Strip Mine, I found that Mystifying Maze, Maze of Ith, and Rogue's Passage killing my creatures very unfun, although it's a meta call.

Strip Mine is banned in Duel Commander so I don't run it. Of the other three, Maze of Ith is the most cost efficient and useful for when Horobi, Death's Wail isn't out. It's also nice when you're dealing with a creature like Rafiq of the Many

Nefashu is pretty funny with Horobi but kinda slow coming out. How about a Scuttlemutt? Ramp, target ability and able to change some colors around if that comes up (I usually use it to turn things black against my Animar deck).

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would be good in exchange for a swamp
November 27, 2016 10:58 a.m.
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is really only good for that swap if I have at least 3 devotion. I tend to have a fairly empty board most of the game due to playing a more control style deck. Most of the permanents that stick are usually colorless, or they'll be gone soon. However, if Endbringer finds its way into a version of this deck, then Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would be a very good inclusion.

Love this deck. Thank you for sharing!
Tetzimoc, Primal Death seems like a decent fit here.

Is this a dual or a 4 player edh deck? I can not tell as you refer to the dual comander ban-list, but this deck doesn't feature in that section.
May 12, 2018 9:58 a.m.
The deck is mainly just for casual group play. But it is toned enough and has a few higher level interactions to fit in a competitive setting. Due to this, I also followed the dual commander banned list at the time of making for anyone who wanted to bring it to that scene too.
It's been a while since I last looked at the dual banned list or have updated for new sets. So I'll probably get to that at some point soon.

I think Torpor Orb would be a fine addition, as you can't remove a creature before it enters, so a deck that utilizes cards like Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath or Agent of Treachery would be turned off
June 2, 2020 3:17 p.m.
The problem with Torpor Orb is that it's just a rock that may or may not do anything. The deck is currently at a decent point in streamlining. There really isn't room for situational cards that could end up just being completely useless. Now, if there was an additional effect that I could always use, or even if it was on a creature, that would be different. But it's just an artifact that sits there that may not even help me in a game. It could actually hurt me by turning off my own effects like Grave Titan.
June 17, 2020 11:49 a.m.
Also, as stated in the description "If it's a suggestion for a card addition, please say what you would take out for it and why". While it's nice that you want to help by suggesting a card. Random card suggestions are almost meaningless. I look through all cards (up to the set the deck was updated for) that could legally be included. If you think something would be good, I probably considered it at some point, and deemed something else was better. So if you want to suggest something, state what it should replace and give the reason why it's a better fit.

Some card changes have been going through testing. Will probably update list shortly after testing a few more MH2 cards. Also have been working on some other decks that I'll put up eventually as well.

The deck now mirrors the paper version through Modern Horizons 2.
I have been thinking about removing Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet in place of Nighthawk Scavenger though. While Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is nice and strong, he does put a large target on my back because he exiles creatures and people don't like their things being completely unavailable to them. While swapping to Nighthawk Scavenger would lose the extra token creation, it does give me evasion on lifelink that can also get pretty strong.

Hey there! Big fan of your deck and especially the dedication to refining it- I've actually basically ripped your whole deck for the base of my Horobi deck and am loving it!
I was looking into "Tombstone Stairwell", and didnt see it anywhere. Have you considered running it?
It would probably mean switching from Mikaeus because of the human synergy added by Syr Konrad and Cutthroat. It allows for running Eldrazi Monument. The main advantage is the consistency of death effects each turn without Horobi's presence- and with "Drivnod, Carnage Dominus" being added recently (and potentially adding some Transmute tutors for consistency...) these effects stack very fast.
I'd love to hear your thoughts- especially if you had other ideas of synergy for Staircase and Horobi, or if it's an idea you've scrapped. Thanks!

@dacardgabo I actually used to have Eldrazi Monument in the mainboard and could generally keep it around with goats (Trading Post, Springjack Pasture) or Sheoldred, Whispering One pretty easily. I just found that I didn't really need it. It was a bit too clunky to play and keep around without a dedication to fodder creation. I ended up only keeping the Springjack Pasture from those cuz it was fairly low cost (and it helps for Gift of Doom), but the others were either too slow or put too much of a target on my head to be worth the trouble.
Tombstone Stairwell seems decent if you are really going hard on the Blood Artist (aristocrats) effects, but otherwise it looks like it would hurt you more than help you. And if that was the case, there are much better commanders for that route. You are constantly giving up mana to keep it around and giving your opponents stuff to utilize. If you're playing against a fully dedicated aristocrats deck, then you are causing yourself a lot more harm than good.
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is actually on the chopping block queue right now along with a few others. I just haven't found what I want to put in for them yet.

Virlym You are the king!! I have added Sheoldred, the Apocalypse in place of Profane Command- it works well and especially with Necromancy, but I am adding back the Profane Command in place of Necromancy- Necromancy kills with or targeting Horobi, Death's Wail (I think?) and I haven't had consistency with pulling anything from my opponent's graveyards- while Profane Command has a lot more utility the way I've played. What do you usually flash/play Necromancy for?
I'm not sure if your table runs a lot of artifact destruction, but I took out Darksteel Ingot and swapped in Relic of Legends- being able to leave Horobi, Death's Wail or Sheoldred, the Apocalypse untapped and then used as a mana resource during other player's turns has led to some interesting and sneaky opportunities for me (unless I have it wrong and you can't use the creature mana ability as an instant?).
I love the lack of infinite combos in this deck, and I thnk Mikaeus, the Unhallowed offers so much dynamic to that gamestyle, I'll be really curious what you would swap him for... he does not play well with opponent's Mimic Vats I've found :,)
March 30, 2023 9:59 p.m.
@dacardgabo Sheoldred, the Apocalypse and Phyrexian Obliterator are two that I've been leaning towards putting in (or back in when it comes to the Phyrexian Obliterator). My current edge cards are Yahenni, Undying Partisan (just kinda falls short of the other 2 tbh), Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon (they generally cause a lot of hate to be directed towards me even tho I love skippy to death), Torment of Hailfire (just a stale way to win due to how common of a wincon it is for black), Praetor's Grasp (it's fun and stayed in since I cracked a foil back in the day, but it's hard to use on spelltable and ppl generally just don't like u taking things. Note, you can exile a combo card even if you never plan on using it), and the tutors Beseech the Queen and Grim Tutor (70% of the time, they just find land or a targeting permanent, but I would rather them just be better draw spells). I just haven't found anything personally interesting enough to put in for them yet.
Profane Command's last ability allows you to target multiple creatures to kill with Horobi, Death's Wail similar to how Touch of Darkness and Cauldron of Souls work, but requires mana for each target. The third ability gives you a way to get around indestructible. The other two options are more niche and game state specific, but are still nice modes to throw onto a card that already fits the game plan.
Necromancy is a general good-stuff card. It targets things in the graveyard so it won't kill them with Horobi, Death's Wail (as they are already dead when the target happens, and just become attached when they enter the battlefield. Similar to how Gift of Doom can be attached to Horobi, Death's Wail if you morph it). I generally just play it if I wanna bring back something big for value (like Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni) or flash it in to grab a sneaky blocker.
Darksteel Ingot is decent because my friends like to just blow everything up. There's a lot of Vandalblasts, Bane of Progresses, Aura Shards, etc. But Relic of Legends is perfectly fine as the second ability doesn't actually target what it taps. And you have it right, it is still a mana ability, so you can use it at any time you would have priority. Do note that the ability is coming from the Relic of Legends itself, so you can tap a creature with summoning sickness for it too.
Lol, I'm glad other ppl are using Mimic Vat. It was always a pet card of mine. Super fun when you can throw a Phyrexian Metamorph under it. Or cheat the trigger by ending the turn with Sundial of the Infinite so you can keep the token.

99% of the time I'm not going to want to untap one of my opponent's creatures, and the only creature that I would care about untapping is my Guul Draz Assassin. So it's not really worth the extra mana cost.
