Deck #5: Mono-Red

Hey Guys! Dave here. Red is frequently looked at as tied for the being the worse mono-color EDH deck possible (Mono-White being the other color). Between lacking answers to Enchantments, narrow tutor capabilities, and traditionally limited card draw, Red has an uphill battle to fight. On top of that, one of Red’s strengths is frowned upon in casual EDH group, mass land destruction. However, Wizards has been giving this underdog some attention over the last few years by making up unique card draw effects, defining synergies within the color, and really shaping what a Red deck should be capable of. Before building Feldon of the Third Path, I was playing a very combo heavy goblin deck (CMR: Bad Company) which was fun, but I wanted something a tad more casual. Feldon offered a different approach and exciting interactions I wanted to explore.

One of the things I love most about this brew is how it can really pile up card advantage. While not as impressive as the raw card draw you’ll find in Blue or Black decks, Feldon’s unique reanimation and impactful creatures can create a powerful board presence in only a few turns. Part of this power comes from the redundant effects within the deck operating in a similar fashion to Feldon; Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Sneak Attack both cheat on the actual mana cost of creatures, complimenting Feldon and operating independently to take over games if unchecked. Additionally, Sundial of the Infinite is a great way to ensure the creatures you cheat into play remain in play.

The deck can also play an effective role at controlling greedy mana-bases with Blood Moon effects and artifact destruction (which isn’t frowned upon nearly as much in my experience). Even though the deck runs a high number of non-basics, most of the time these effects will hinder opponents more than yourself. The only two key non-basic lands are Homeward Path and Madblind Mountain which both help provide actual card advantage when paired with Humble Defector and Scroll Rack, respectively.

Overall, some of my most memorable Commander games were had while playing with this deck. It has a lot of interaction and unique lines of play that require some thought to work yourself out of a potentially bad situation. On the other hand, people aren’t quite used to the unique reanimation effect Feldon has and it requires them to put some thought into their own lines of play.
