i'd suggest Psychic Strike over Countermand since it's not very easy to leave 4 mana open for Countermand on your opponent's turn. Consuming Aberration is a very good miller/killer (especially with all the flashbacks provided by drainu) so if you could fit that in there, i think he would do well.

thanks for the suggestions! I'll replace Countermand with Psychic Strike . I also want to replace Geralf's Mindcrusher , and Consuming Aberration seems to be a good substitute, but I also found out that Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker and Lazav, Dimir Mastermind can really be good adds. Which one do you think is the better? :)

Consuming Aberration and Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker does almost the same thing (with minor differences) and they both have the same cmc so it's really a matter of personal choice which one you use. here's a breakdown of their pros and cons.

Consuming Aberration :

pros

*gets bigger with each mill

*crazy milling especially with flashback or cipher

*doesn't have to attack to mill

cons

*can't be played unless you have already milled your opponent a few (he's 0/0 if the opponent's graveyard is empty. i've had an opponent use Elixir of Immortality while i had this out then consuming aberration died)

*practically a game ender once you get him out (either by milling or by damage)

Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker :

pros

*has flying so you can almost always mill every turn

*can be played even if opponent's graveyard is empty

*really crazy milling. worst case is you mill your opponent for 4 lands (if he has 4 lands on the top his deck.

cons

*low power and toughness for his cmc

*legendary (can't have more than 1 in play)

*has to deal combat damage to mill

personally i'd go with the Consuming Aberration because he mills even on your opponent's turn (when you cast instants). it really messes up their deck preparation. you can mill them when they scry, before they draw, when you bounce their permanents to the top of their library, etc. i've used it before with Hidden Strings and Aqueous Form . really fun combo if you do get it together.

i'm not really a fan of Lazav, Dimir Mastermind . he's great if your opponent is playing midrange but not so much if your opponent plays control or weenie/aggro. maybe you can put him in the sideboard?

also, try Breaking / Entering or Glimpse the Unthinkable in place of Mind Sculpt . more expensive but better if your mana can handle it

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I mainboarded Consuming Aberration , and if my budget will approve I'll try to add Glimpse the Unthinkable or Mind Funeral . Thanks again! :D

Thanks! I was already thinking about adding it, it would be a very nice combo. What should I take out for it?

I like the idea and I think ashiok is the second best planeswalker in Modern! He/she/it should take his/her/its rightful place as king/queen/prince/ss of Modern!

Seriously, the thing is that milling them and dealing lethal damage to them is counterproductive - including one of them in the deck is hindering the other. I don't dislike the idea, but it can be done better.

  • What is the budget on this one?
  • Are you 100% set on the theme?
  • Are you OK with splashing another color?

Thanks for the comment! I really love Ashiok, iy's absolutely my favourite Walker. For the rest, the way this deck works isn't by dealing lethal damage! My main goal is to totally and brutally mill the opponent, not with spells like Breaking or Glimpse the Unthinkable , but with my zombies, thanks to Undead Alchemist ! I don't have to deal a single damage to the opponent in order to win. Milling gives me Zombies, and Zombies will mill. This is also supported by Diregraf Captain , that gives an extra mill for every zombie, and Altar of the Brood : I mill, I get the zombies, this triggers the Altar, more mill, more zombies and so on. In a playtest, I milled something like 30 cards in a turn with 1 Undead Alchemist and 2 Altar of the Brood on the battlefield!

Yes, I'm 100% sure on the theme, and I think blue black is the fastest combination to mill my opponent and create my army :)

In fact, this deck is based on the first ability of Undead Alchemist

Ok, understood, final question before I offer up some suggestions: What is the budget on this one?

I think low-medium budget, 'cause I want to buy it soon :)

Ok, so, in order to magnify the power of the deck, several things are needed:

  • lower mana curve - some of the cards can be replaced with others for a similar effect
  • recursion and protection - ensure that your strategy is unhindred
  • virtual card advantage and card advantage - ensure that you have the leg on the opponent.
  • consistency - better mana and mana utilization

We can do this with a few simple changes which won't cost much. Lets start with the basics:

22 lands - 4 Dismal Backwater , 4 Jwar Isle Refuge , 4 Drowned Catacomb should be decent enough fixing.

3 Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver - great card, we need more of it.

4 Undead Alchemist - meat of the deck.

4 Altar of the Brood - meat of the deck.

That is 34 cards that make up the core of the deck. everything else seems optional and optimizable!

4 Gravecrawler - the perfect zombie for the deck.

4 Butcher Ghoul - recurring threat

4 Dregscape Zombie - recurring threat

2 Geralf's Mindcrusher - the end game zombie.

3 Ghoulraiser - provides recursion and virtual CA (even if they kill it immediately, it still provided value).

17 zombies that make up the early to midgame plan. We have 9 cards left to grind for more advantage and protection.

2 Traumatize - severely underrated and brutal after a turn 4 alchemist.

3 Negate - holding up a nice counter to most of the strategies.

4 Doom Blade - simple and effective.

This version eschews the limited use cards by incorporating zombies with inherent recursion for more virtual CA. Gravecrawler and Altar seems like a match made in heaven. Think of a sideboard with more removal and more counters.

Ok, after a long consideration I've decided what to do. I think that I'll keep the Lich Lord of Unx , the Ghoulraiser over the Diregraf Captain and the Unbreathing Horde , since it is a great 3-drop in this deck, it can be really huge. I'll add 2 Geralf's Mindcrusher , nice fatty with great ability! And 4 Butcher Ghoul for early game protection. This is for the creatures part of the deck.

I'll obviously keep 4 Altar of the Brood and a pair of Grindclock , and I'll definitely add a Traumatize . I think I'll keep 3 Undying Evil 'cause I really need to protect my Undead Alchemist , and this is a great card to save them and also pumping with a +1/+1 counter. I prefer Psychic Strike over Negate : 1 more mana, but it'll mill (as a bonus) and can counter a generic spell, it's strong. Also added 3 Doom Blade to control the board.

Gravecrawler and 2 other Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver are simple too expensive.. I can afford only 1 Ashiok, and the Crawler here is around 7 euros.. Maybe in the future I'll add them :)

I cannot thank you enough for the comment! It's been extremely useful! I hope this deck will mill like crazy now :D

Looks better than before for sure :)

Keep in mind, no deck is ever finished, so I am glad I have at least given you a direction for what to strive :)

You gave me a great suggestion :) I also have 1 Lord of the Undead , maybe I'll put it instead of 1 of the Ghoulraiser s!

Awesome deck! Just wondering, why add in Dragon Throne of Tarkir when the goal of the deck is to mill? Would you consider replacing it with 2x Thought Scour instead (for a little bit more card draw)? Or could just mainboard 2x Psychic Strike for better control.

October 23, 2014 1:33 a.m.

Javaz says... #25

I added Dragon Throne of Tarkir because the main goal of this deck is also to mill when I attack with my zombies (first ability of Undead Alchemist ). Giving all my zombies +4/+4 and trample seems great, both in the offensive and the defensive aspect. Consider that more damage = more mill = more zombies. I've not bought this deck yet, so I don't know if this will really work.. What do you think? Maybe I can replace it with something more powerful :) and obviously thank you for the appreciation! :D
