Would love to throw more Prognostic Sphinx and Dissolve in there, but I'm not sure what to eliminate. What would you take out?

And nice take on the deck. Seems much more focused. I prefer having a little bit of that extra utility though, with Ratchet Bomb and the 2-mana counters, at the cost of bigger spread. I'll give your rendition a couple of tries and see if it's worth re-structuring the deck.

I just went and made this deck on MTGO and it is so much fun! I just feel like a troll most of the time as in some match ups I would literally just counter or steal ALL of his creatures. I played a game where an aggro player had nothing on the board until about turn 6.

I also love the synergy between Prognostic Sphinx and Opportunity . Scry three then draw four is amazing!!

I found I needed more answers that the deck provides so I am making some personal tweaks. I'm finding that so many Pithing Needle s are dead draws so I am taking 2 out. I also am taking out some Ratchet Bomb s because it usually ends up killing my Claustrophobia s or Domestication s.I have got 3x Prognostic Sphinx and have brought in some Rapid Hybridization for the sideboard to deal with big creatures that just kill me. I put a Cancel in the sideboard just because I found it reliable against so many decks with creatures and instant speed pumps.

Love the deck and will be hopefully playing it a lot! Too much fun to be had :D

Thanks for trying the deck out! Glad you had fun with it.

The Ratchet Bomb killing our enchantments is something I've run into in a few matches as well, although usually I just end up putting more charges on the bomb to deal with bigger things. Rapid Hybridization is a nice idea for the deck; I think I'll take out 2x Pithing Needle and work in 2x Rapid Hybridization to give that extra flexibility.

Love the deck.

Have you considered Agoraphobia ? It's not as great as a claustrophobia, but being able to bounce does give it better chances of preserving your card advantage, and it plays well with Domestication as long as the creature is 8/8 or less. Pull it at your opponent's end step with your floated mana (if not digging), and you get their full creature to smack them with in your turn. Just don't forget to reapply it before your end step!

I'm not a huge fan of the Wall of Frost since it lacks threat/flying. How do you like it so far?

umbron says... #9

Thanks for the comments!

Agoraphobia could be quite interesting in this deck! It's a trade-off because it doesn't tap the creature, so stuff like Deathrite Shaman becomes more of a threat (although there really isn't a lot of tap-ability creatures in standard at the moment), and it doesn't deal with big creatures (6 power+) such as Nighthowler , consuming abberation, etc. unless I accompany it with a Domestication , using the strategy you prescribed. Given what people are running in T1 though, I see a good place for it. I'll give it a shot in MTGO and maybeboard it for now. Thanks for the idea!

I'm on the fence with Wall of Frost . It's been brilliant in some matchups, since even if the opponent outnumbers me, with the tap effect I can effectively block 2 at a time with it, but it does nothing against Chandra's Phoenix , Desecration Demon , Nightveil Specter , and tokens like those from Elspeth, Sun's Champion . I considered several replacements for it: Frostburn Weird , which survives most red burn spells and gives me something to do with my mana, Vortex Elemental , which can be a threat even to giant creatures but dies easily to any burn/removal, or Hover Barrier , which has flying. All are candidates at the moment. I could also just remove that creature slot all together and dump in more control.

Could you describe some of the matchups like what to side in vs them? I think that would be helpful cuz I think I might want to build this deck.

umbron, not to ruin your day, but your deck is actually #11.

March 30, 2014 8:42 p.m.

umbron says... #12

That doesn't ruin my day at all, Prima. I'm just happy to have gotten this far :)

mdw2402 here are some of the big contenders you're looking at:

G/R or G/U or G/U/R type decks: I fight a lot of these, and they use early mana dorks to send out big hitters like Polukranos, World Eater , Kalonian Hydra and Stormbreath Dragon fairly quickly. Against these decks, take out Negate and side in either 3x Curse of the Swine (though this won't eat a Sylvan Caryatid or 2x Ratchet Bomb 1x Rapid Hybridization , or 1x Ratchet Bomb 2x Essence Scatter . Favor the Ratchet Bomb if you see hydras, ESPECIALLY Mistcutter Hydra . You may even want to take out Domestication for these matches to make room for more of the cards above.

Esper Control: Take out Domestication and Claustrophobia as well as 1 Nullify . Add 1x Dissolve 2x Perplexing Chimera 2x Pithing Needle 2x Ratchet Bomb . If they run Jace, Memory Adept , also side in 1x Elixir of Immortality .

Devotion to Blue: I don't really use the sideboard much here. This deck deals with blue devotion really well. You can potentially add in the extra Dissolve and Essence Scatter at the cost of Negate s if it's really creature-heavy.

Devotion to Black: Sub in the two Ratchet Bomb , maybe in the place of 2 Negate . This is to deal with the two big threats, an early Pack Rat and a midgame Desecration Demon . You may want to throw in Essence Scatter as well.

Very similar to a Standard Draw-Go deck I made to annoy some special people in my life.....really recommend you find a way to run 3x Aetherling +1

Sometimes i feel the deck was missing win conditions, especially against control decks. I copied your list and made some alterations.

raffess: Nice take on the deck! I think the issue you were having is that this deck is extremely "safe" and "slow" so winning takes a while. Against certain decks you could even say it's a bit too slow, so you end up losing before drawing the necessary card (there's only really four cards in here I would call win-cons). I'm getting this feedback from some others as well so I may need to rebalance the deck to include another AEtherling or two more Prognostic Sphinx .

I will leave my feedback on your version of the deck on your deck's page.

This deck is awesome. Going to have to try this against my buddy's elf aggro deck. +1 from me!One quick question- it looks like you took it out, but based on part of your description, when you swap a Perplexing Chimera for a Master of Waves does it count as entering the battlefield when it gets to your side? I guess I'm asking when master of waves' ability triggers. Not 100% sure on the mechanics there. Not saying you're wrong at all, I just have no idea. I'm still learning!

March 31, 2014 3:57 p.m.

Behgz says... #20

Taking control of an opponents master of waves will only slide it from one side of the board to the other, you won't create elemental tokens as a result as the Master of Waves isn't re-entering the battlefield which is what triggers his elemental spawning effect. Your opponent would lose their elemental token's, but at that point all you've done is domesticate a single 2/1 pro-red merfolk.

I see you have ways of generating a boat load of Blue devotion, but literally no ways to capitalize on that, even something like Thassa's Rebuff would be at least one way of taking advantage of your own devotion, or a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx even though it might be out of budget..

March 31, 2014 4:31 p.m.

umbron says... #21

Yea, I agree on the devotion, but there's really no "budget" way to capitalize on that at the moment, since blue devotion is T1.

I could include Thassa's Rebuff , but in my honest opinion it's just inferior to the other counter spells I am running. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , as you guessed, is out of budget range.

Maybe including 2 or 3 Master of Waves won't be too hard on the overall price of this deck. Thoughts?

March 31, 2014 5 p.m.

umbron says... #22

Just checked the price on Master of Waves . Unfortunately it's too costly at the moment, and would move the deck further away from it's current wallet-friendly form. Sad day :(

March 31, 2014 5:06 p.m.

Selfish says... #23

@ Albitron

Yes. If you successfully exchanged Master of Waves with Perplexing Chimera you would take control of the spell before it enters the battlefield. It would use your devotion count to spawn elementals.

March 31, 2014 6:01 p.m.

umbron says... #24

albitron: As Selfish says above, you do get the "enters the battlefield" effect if you swap your Perplexing Chimera with a Master of Waves . This is because Master of Waves is still a spell at the time of the swap, and has not yet entered the battlefield until the swap completes.

Please mainboard Agoraphobia for flavour's sake alongside Claustrophobia ? I find it hilarious that they printed the two in the same standard format, the latter twice, like they're pushing for the two to be put in the same deck.

Also, I've found a large amount of utility in Clone similarly to your thoughts on Domestication .
