I've seen a modern version of this, using Clockspinning to speed up the Quest for Ula's Temple . I tweaked it myself tossing in some Omenspeaker to dig faster. The deck doesn't work often, but it's amazing when it does :)

Grozoth would be a fun idea!

High Tide is not really necessary here, you might as well add artifact mana. It should only be used in island only land lists. If you are dropping extra land a turn it could be nice but then you would be playing green/blue, or you need powerful untap land effects.

I think that it would be better to have more than one Whelming Wave because it's a great board wipe for this deck. aside from that I love the idea! +1

zyphermage what would you fill those 4 slots with then? I get what you're saying about High Tide but it is very on theme is why I included it.

And High Tide has saved me while playing with this deck more times than I can thank it. People I know LOVE to destroy the Quest just as it goes off, leaving me with only 2 options: hope to god that I have all of my Fog Bank s out when that happens or Tide into a Stormtide Leviathan or anything else that I can get out in my hand that will save me from scooping.

I do agree with adding more Whelming Wave though. Late game, it secures the victory and early game, it can open the field back up by fizzing tokens and slowing down devotion.

Whelming Wave: anything that can wipe an aggro, tribal, or devotion deck on T4... but also give you a distinct late game presnce (meaning late game wipe without hitting your own fatties)... is well worth the slots.

Also, Grozoth definitely deserves a spot since it lets you tutor your 9-drop fatties, which I think you should have more of (Inkwell Leviathan who is just a monster, tough as nails to kill, and tramples right over aggro, and Stormtide Leviathan who lets you take advantage of all those Islandwalk dudes).

Like you saw in my deck I linked earlier, Sage of Epityr lets you recon 4-deep for that Quest, and Omenspeaker lets you Scry down to what you need.... or you could just Augury Owl.

Late game Interpret the Signs could be HUGE draw power (imagine finding a Quest and a Stormtide Leviathan, reveal the Lev, draw 8, play the Quest, yada yada).

Of course, for draw power, now there's Dig Through Time if you've managed to acquire any.

Mystic Speculation has done some work in EDH for me because of the recursion. At worst, something like Sigiled Starfish can let you scry to set up your next draw every turn.

My point being when your deck hinges on something like a single card (Quest), you oughta have ways to dig for it.

Indeed. Thanks guys, I'll try out some tweaks and report back. Appreciate the assist.

I would throw in that fourth Counterspell also if you find room because reasons.

Also, thewyzman, Stormtide Leviathan is an 8 mana drop so you couldn't fetch it with Grozoth. I also feel that drawing isn't a big deal with this deck as it's a chance that you hinder yourself with the Quest out. Draw is always necessary in a deck, but with Spreading Seas and the possible addition of Grozoth, I personally wouldn't worry about draw. Even as is, if I empty my hand, you've got a lot to worry about then because something good happened for me. (:<

kxc999: Drawing as I'm looking at it isn't about keeping a full hand, but rather finding those key components that make this deck work. My version of this literally falls flat on its face 7/8 times against most Modern decks if I can't find what I need in the first few turns, so the ability to dig for what you need early is vital, either through Sage of Epityr recon, or through scrying.

As amazing as Grozoth is, he's way too slow unless you've got the Quest out to drop him on T4 at best (or T3 if you use Clockspinning, I mean, who doesn't want a Inkwell Leviathan at the end of T3?).

I guess we've both just had different experiences. Even against Sliver decks, I can stall until I go off. I'm not saying Grozoth is a good draw engine. I'm just saying that I usually don't have to dig. What I have works fine. The zoth would just be fun for when the Quest goes off and you want to keep laying out baddies each turn. Clockspinning seems like a dead draw waiting to happen to me though since it only affects the Quest. Granted, in a scenario where you have what you need, it would be great to have a turn 3 Quest go off. But I feel having more Whelming Wave, one more Counterspell, and more Spreading Seas to clear the field, counter spells, and turn opponents lands into islands/draw would be more helpful. To each their own though! :P I'd suggest the Sage of Epityr though since this deck has only 1 turn-1 drop and he's definitely something this deck can benefit from. Lorthos, the Tidemaker has never done anything for me except be an 8/8 late game since his attack ability costs so much. I'd suggest taking him out for another Leviathan.

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner could help protect your creatures from removal in the long-term and she's only 1 mana more than a Counterspell

Minamo, School at Water's Edge can be used to untap Nykthos or one of your legendary creatures. Could be really useful for ramping with Nykthos.

Oh and I like this deck. +1 from me :)

Piracy would work well, downside is it's a pretty expensive.

February 27, 2015 5:43 p.m.

Jazzyboy says... #24

Piracy's too easy to respond to. Your opponent could just tap all their own land while it's still on the stack.Though it could prevent them from using counter spells as they'd have no mana themselves.

itachi45, I'm pretty sure I have 1 of each of those creatures. Any suggestion on what I should remove?
