This deck has changed - and, dare I say, matured - a lot since I first commented on it. How has it been doing?

@steele000 You'd think that, but it really doesn't. Decks with boardwipes tend to be slow enough that this deck runs well against them. Many games against control end with me activating Door to Nothingness with only land.

@Long_Con Thanks! It's been doing pretty well. I feel like almost very loss I've had I could have fixed in some way by playing differently, so it's nice to know that, if it were piloted by a better player, this deck would be really good.

Personally I'd swap a Diabolic Revelation for a Boundless Realms

December 25, 2012 7 p.m.

Why? Having piloted the deck myself I can say that you rarely need to do that. If you have 7 mana, diabolic lets you find the parts you need to ensure you can generate at least 2 more mana, and ensure you have the fixing required or the doorway. Realms will give you a lot of mana, but doesn't help ensure you can make the right colours or win the game.

And if you already have enough mana, all realms will do is thin the deck. Revelation will pretty much just win you the game.

Door decks are a lot of fun and who doesn't love pushing somebody through it? But the Return to Ravinca set and probably more cards in the future have brought a lot of targeted removal and decks that win on just one card are becoming harder to play but that will never stop us we just have to work around it.

@redafroninja That's why the deck also includes one copy each of card:Devil's Play, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker , and card:Ludevic's Test Subject. That's also why it only has one copy of Door to Nothingness . The main win condition is DtN, but the deck has other ways to win, as well.

Whenever I see Door to Nothingness card:Azor's Elocutors Biovisionary I want to make a deck around them because that's why they exist right? But one little Pithing Needle can totally wipe out the win condition. I don't think these decks are viable outside of casual. They are some of the most fun to play though.

Biovisionary + Infinite Reflection + three other small dudes = win

@redafroninja Did you read my reply to your earlier comment? There are other win conditions in the deck. Door to Nothingness is the easiest one to pull off, but it's not the only way the deck can win by any means. There are times when I've suspected an opponent of sideboarding Slaughter Games or Pithing Needle in, and all I had to do was sideboard out the wincon that won the previous game to make their counter to it completely dead.

@AztecaSaint Yeah, post-Gatecrash I may decide to include that in this deck as yet another wincon. I'm not sure, though, because if the meta doesn't change much, as creature-removal heavy as it is, I doubt I'll be able to keep 4 creatures alive for too long.

Nice deck. Have you seen Travis Woo's OmniDoor Thragfire deck? It's a bit more expensive but is a lot of fun to play. My variant of it is deck:fallout-1.

redafroninja says... #12

@pelolep Sorry I did read your comment but I was more talking about decks that rely heavy on one card which you shouldn't ever really do. Your deck is great because it offers win con outside the door. Probably my favorable door deck because it can change from door to damage. It's great to have versatility in these decks.

@redafroninja Oh, okay, thanks!

@ZaphodBeblebrox Yeah, I tend to try out all of Woo's brews. It sort of saddened me when he posted Omnidoor Thragfire, because it was so similar to this deck, and people no longer consider this deck very original because of that. I'll check your variation out when I have more time.

Love the deck man. I want to make it so bad. It has so many LOL's its not even funny.+1

I don't have any real feedback, but +1 cause the the deck is really cool. I've loved the idea of Axebane Guardian ever since I first saw him, and comboing him with card:Ludevic's Test Subject is a great idea.

Just gave it a play test against one of my red blue control decks (mainly to see how my deck goes against various other types of decks) but I noticed that there were 2 tutors sitting in your hand for the entire game that couldn't be cast because I just countered your Chromatic Lantern every time it got played. With only two Swamp you don't really run into them enough. Maybe throw a few more in, or some duel lands. Also there are no gates to search for with your Gatecreeper Vine so put in something like Dimir Guildgate and that might solve both problems.

pelolep says... #17

@Qark18 Gatecreeper Vine searches for basic lands as well as guildgates. I prefer the basic lands to gates because of the worthlessness of them once Chromatic Lantern is played. Also, Dispel in the sideboard is meant to be sideboarded in against counters, because that is one of the worst matchups the deck has.

Arbor Elf is basically worthless, either add more "forests" i.e.Overgrown Tomb and Stomping Ground , or just pay card:Avacyn's Pilgrim

February 24, 2013 3:48 a.m.

pelolep says... #19

@XyZiron Arbor Elf untaps Forests, he doesn't create any mana himself. There's a big difference in a deck that runs Chromatic Lantern . Even before Gatecrash, when I didn't have the Breeding Pool s, I've never had any issues making sure I have a forest.

Have you played this at any tournuments? If so, what were the results?

March 1, 2013 3:36 p.m.

pelolep says... #21

@Sworddude098 I played it in a few FNMs, but that was back before it was completely refined, and it went pretty even. Most of the playtesting afterwards was done on Cockatrice and MTGO, where it has done rather well.

Myrlifax says... #22

So I built this deck and I have to say, bravo good sir. However, I did some tweaking of my own. I added two more win conditions. First I removed four cards in order to do this, but it's alright. I added in a Galvanic Alchemist for the infinite mana combo, Infinite Reflection and a Biovisionary so that you can play those two at the same time while having three creatures out for a win. And finally, I added in a Azor's Elocutors. That card may take a little while to play but with enough tutor cards in the deck, you can get to any of these cards easily, especially the Infinite Reflection and Biovisionary.

No Trading Post for stall/retrieval?

March 11, 2013 2:34 a.m.

pelolep says... #24

@killkong1211 Trading Post was in the original sideboard for the deck, but never turned out to actually be useful during any playtests. Very few decks run artifact removal, even in the sideboard, and the current counters that are most played in Standard, Dissipate and Syncopate, both exile the countered card, so retrieval would do nothing.
