Delver's mandrills (Temur)

Modern Aggro Control Delver RUG (Temur)

Sideboard

Here is my RUG delver list. I think that the deck is good, but more control oriented lists always need some improvements. The plan for aggro-control decks is to be aggro because of their "high" number of creatures (they can be protected by your counterspells) against control and turn control after sideboarding to beat more aggro decks. Ultimately, the deck can turn into whatever you need it to be. The deck is suppose to be budget and every card with high value were not buy, I got them in some booster pack. So, here are my choices...

Maindeck :

  • Delver of Secrets   : Some people actually don't like the card, put I think it is pretty good. In the deck, it can flip consistently on turn 2 and then beat for 3 damages with flying, which is not really not bad.

  • Young Pyromancer : it can build a very large army pretty easily because it ask you nothing except to play some instant and sorcery spells and that's the plan for the deck (play some instant and sorcery), so no problem. Even if it is good I would not see the number higher than two or three.

  • Jace, Vryn's Prodigy   : one of the best planeswalker, his loot ability is really good and with the help of Thought Scour, he can flip pretty easily.

  • Savage Knuckleblade : at first look, he is not impressive, but once he is on the battlefield it is amazing. He don't die to Lightning Bolt and his bounce ability make it resilient against control and he can be fast with haste.

  • Hooting Mandrills : amazing. Simply amazing. I always cast him for one or two mana and do it consistently on turn 2 with a fetchland and Thought Scour.

  • Deprive : I actually prefer it to Mana Leak because the deck often goes to the lategame, where Mana Leak is not that good. Also, I found that his "downside" is really small for what it does.

  • Mana Leak : well, really good counterspell at the beginning of the game and in the midgame.

  • Stubborn Denial : awesome with the knuckleblade and the mandrills, it can protect all of your creatures for a single mana !!!

  • Izzet Charm : it does everything, to couterspell to burn passing by some recycle effect. I feel like one is the right number.

  • think twicd : I have found that the card is really great. Most of the time, you will play it at instant speed, when you didn't play your counterspells, this way, you didn't really waste your turn keeping your mana open to play a counterspell, that you ended not to play. But what make the card that good is his flashback ability. It make it possible to don't have two dead turns because of your counterspells, it plays well with Thought Scour and it give you card advantage.

  • Gitaxian Probe : good cantrip that can help you to play your counterspells (knowing what your opponent have in hand) and can be played freely.

  • Thought Scour : a cantrip that can be played at instant speed and it help you to fuel you graveyard for the Hooting Mandrills.

  • Lightning Bolt : best burn in modern and possibly best removal, no explanations needed.

  • Electrolyze : a free removal that can destroy up to two creatures at instant speed, so it is good with your counterspells.

  • Weight of Spires : in modern, your opponent will always have plenty of nonbasic lands, so it is simply a big spot removal for one mana at instant speed. Athough it can feel funky when we look at it, I was really happy with the card in my deck.

  • Vapor Snag : a sweet bounce effect card that in the worst case, can bounce your own creatures to protect them.

Sideboard :

  • keranos, god storm : when you need to play more control, switch the Delver of Secrets   because it is much better in the lategame. It is almost impossible to lose a game while having it in play.

  • Thragtusk : amazing, play it for the lategame and it will give you the game pretty easily.

  • Thrun, the Last Troll : really good against control decks because it is almost impossible to kill it (hexproof, regenerate and can't be countered).

  • Ancient Grudge : one of the best artifact-removal of the format.

  • Dispel : good against control and burn because it is a cheap way to disrupt them in addition of Stubborn Denial.

  • Deprive : another couterspell when you feel that you need it (jund, junk, control, etc.).

  • Anger of the Gods : best way to turn control against aggro is to get some sweepers, so here it is ! In bonus, it can kill Kitchen Finks.

  • Weight of Spires : when you need more spot removal and/or some big removals (jund, junk, etc.).

  • Dragon's Claw : so good against burn, especially when you have two on the battlefield.

One of the weakness of the deck is the manabase, not that it is shaky, it is simply really painful with all the fetchlands and the shocklands. Also, it have Gitaxian Probe that can hurt you.

Like I said earlier, I would really like some advices because, by my experience, all control decks are never really finished. So, if you have any suggestions or questions, write it in the comments section and I will answer you as soon as possible.
