Derevi, the Controller

Commander / EDH

cfl789

THE IDEA:

Ever since I first tried it, bant has been my favorite color combination. It combines the controlling aspect of white and blue, yet the green helps add support by giving me the advantage in mana. Green and blue also go hand in hand when it comes to getting out some massive threat. with white being there to pave the road for it's victory. It's a color combination that is bound for greatness. However, when I first wanted to start playing EDH, if I wanted to play a G/W/B, I could spend the $60+ on Angus Mackenzie and be faithful to G/W/U's full potential, yet I knew the budget was way outside of my grasp. There was also Rafiq of the Many, but even a first time MtG player is able to point out his aggression. Then came Derevi, Empyrial Tactician. At first glance, I'll admit, I didn't see what made her so special. But after reading counltess deck lists with her/him/it as a commander, I can tell you that I have seen the rain.

THE STRATEGY:

Although the pace of the deck is slow, it doesn't take long to become the biggest threat on the table. As long as I keep the spot removal handy, the counterspells open, and a reset button in case of the threats that are a bit more tricky (cough Thrun, the Last Troll cough), I typically end up dominating the field. After most of the early game shenanigans is out of the way, either a bomb or a card engine will typically pave the way to victory. However, the one thing that Derevi offers that she/he/it can guarantee to block at least two creatures as long as I have the mana open to do so. Two? Well, all I have to do is respond to combat by tapping down that opposing Inferno Titan or the ever so troublesome Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, whilist blocking the next larger creature that doesn't trample.

WINCONS/FINISHERS:

I typically win the game with one of the following cards;

*- Not an actual wincon, just a super nuisance that typically leads to an opponent's concession.

APPRECIATED FEEDBACK:

  • A cheap ($$$-wise) yet more efficient land-base.

  • Field controllers (Like Memnarch)

  • Combos, synergies, and other ways to abuse my commander/deck.

  • More support/additions to the wizard subtheme.
