try a Dragonstorm

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think Dragonstorm will be a lot of use without some utility dragons to tutor for, since the storm is rather unlikely to do much. It might be a good sideboard option though with an expansion of the types of dragons.

I love the flow and ease of the deck. Perfect for a first deck. The only thing I am questioning is Wall of Roots . I have not done enough play tests, but wouldn't a card like Gatecreeper Vine be a bit more suited to the task?

In all my tests and the games we have played, Wall of Roots has been one of the best ramp cards in the deck. It drops in early as a 0/5, which means it can stall the board for a turn or two unless they have evasion or removal. On top of that it doesn't have to tap for its mana ability, which means both that it can block and use it the same turn it drops. This often leads to a second wall or ramp card on turn 2, ensuring that a dragon comes out on turn 3.

I've been considering replacing Farseek with Gatecreeper Vine though. Farseek is actual ramp and can fetch Stomping Ground , but Gatecreeper Vine has a body and adds to the number of defenders for Overgrown Battlement . It's really a question of use in early or late game; Farseek is more ramp to allow for turn 3 dragons, while Gatecreeper Vine offers more card advantage and overall mana for the late game.

+1 From a Timmy. This looks like great fun. I would replace the Farseek s with Sakura-Tribe Elder s. Also Primordial Hydra and Genesis Wave are fun mana sinks.

After a round of playtesting I like it! It felt like it was going pretty slow, since I kept a hand without threats, but plenty of ramp and card draw. I thought it was going slow, until I looked at the time counter and it said T6... and I had dealt 20 damage exactly.T5 Dropped Dragon Roost AND made a 5/5 Flyer. T6 I used Kessig Wolf Run to give him +15/+0 and swung for lethal in 1 turn.

Looks like the type of deck any kid would be very happy to play! Good job sir! +1

You might consider Sylvan Caryatid as it's a very evasive dork.

Thanks for the feedback! Sylvan Caryatid might make for a great replacement for Farseek . I'll have to try and get my hands on a few and give it a run.

This deck was so fun I had to come back and test it some more. After 9 or 10 more tests I've noticed two things. 1, that without interaction, it consistently wins by turn 6, sometimes even turn 5. and 2, that most of the mulligans are caused because of no green source in the opener. You might consider replacing 4x Mountain with 4 Copperline Gorge for more consistency. I suggest copperline since your most important need for it would be early game anyway, it's very inexpensive, and the expensive duals aren't modern legal :P.

Good suggestion, I'll throw those in on my next order and try 'em out. It would be nice if the fetchlands would be reprinted, some Wooded Foothills would really steamline the deck's mana base. While normally I wouldn't be too concerned about format legality for casual play, the local shops sometimes run semi-casual modern tournaments, and the ear to ear grin of a boy who just beat a grown man in a tournament is priceless. The face-palming shame of the guy who just got beat by a 9 year old with dragons is worth a laugh too! :p

Why not Birds of Paradise instead of your arbor elves?

June 19, 2014 12:16 p.m.

Maphreal says... #12

Because Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl is amazing ramp.

Thanks for the suggestions. Balefire Dragon might be a good replacement for Savageborn Hydra , I'll check and see what my step-son prefers. I've tried Birds of Paradise , and even though it pairs well with Kessig Wolf Run , Arbor Elf is quite often way better simply because of Utopia Sprawl . It allows for great ramp, and you wouldn't believe the amount of 1 land opening hands it can salvage and still drop a turn 3 dragon.

I shot you a search for Dragons, just in case you ever need more. Worse ones in front: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?page=0&sort=rating+&action=advanced&format=%20[%22Modern%22]&color=%20@%28|[R]|[G]%29&subtype=%20[%22Dragon%22]

Really like this concept. You might add in Dragon Egg . It would work well with Overgrown Battlement .

June 24, 2014 12:40 p.m.

Maphreal says... #18

Thanks for the input. I've tried Dragon Egg but it just doesn't do much for the deck other than fit the theme. It can chump once and get me a weenie dragon, and maybe 1 extra mana from a Battlement. But 3 converted mana cost is too much for it, 3 curves badly for this deck. I can't play it on turn 1, on turn 2 if I play it I usually can't play any ramp, and on turn 3 I want to be playing a real dragon.

Scourge of Valkas + Utvara Hellkite is a really good combo

take out one utavra hellkite, and replace it with Sarkhan Vol

OpenFire says... #21

I can't help but think that Dragon Broodmother or Broodmate Dragon (if you're willing to go Jund, and I think you have the fixing for it) are better than Utvara Hellkite .

July 1, 2014 4:03 p.m.

Killkow says... #22

I would think Sarkhan Vol is way too slow and doesn't really do much, considering most creatures already have haste, he doesn't need the opponents creatures, and the 4/4 dragons take too long to get.

Dragon Broodmother is a good card, but seems a little slow for the deck. She'd be better in a grindy match up. Broodmate Dragon mana fixing aside just isn't really that great, then you add the extra color and.. well, bad xP

Plus, the kid likes Utvara, so let him keep Utvara lol. It's still a ridiculously good card after all, even without haste.

I meant to reply to these yesterday, but my step-son who plays this broke his foot so there were more important things heh. But Killkow nailed it.

I absolutely love the flavor of Sarkhan Vol , but his first two abilities are near useless in the deck, and by the time the ultimate pops, the game is pretty much over anyways. If I were to add a planeswalker, it would be most likely Domri Rade , I'd even go with Xenagos, The Reveler over poor Mr. Vol.

And yeah, the Utvaras are sub-optimal, but he loves the card. I miss my days as a Magic newbie where I fell in love with sub-optimal cards because they were cool. I'm not going to discourage that in him.

July 2, 2014 10:23 a.m.

You might want to think about Ancient Hellkite which is amazing against weenie decks.

July 7, 2014 9:58 a.m.

Maphreal says... #25

Thanks for the suggestion. However if I were to go that route, I would rather use Balefire Dragon . It's easier to cast (RRR is surprisingly difficult to get early in the game in this deck), it hits all their creatures for 6 if it gets through, and the damage scales with pump.

Right now Steel Hellkite is rockin' hard. He hits weenies hard and can take out non-creature threats just as well.
