Ooh nice find. I'll have to try to work him in. Unfortunately 3 CMC is rough on the tempo, as turn 1 is a 1-drop, turn 2 is two 2-drops, and turn 3 is a 5+ drop. He may be worth it though, time to nab some and do some testing. Thanks for the suggestion!

Why not switch Wall of Roots with Birds of Paradise ? Very cool deck

Thanks! I've tried the Birds of Paradise route. It combos well with Kessig Wolf Run and can produce red mana which are big pluses, but Wall of Roots can produce mana the same turn it drops, allowing for some big turn 2 plays, and it helps with the ramp from Overgrown Battlement as well as being a blocker to stall out early aggro.

It sure would! I'm just leaving it on the Maybeboard until I can get my hands on some. Thanks!

I really like this deck. Maybe a Crucible of Fire to replace your Dragon Roost but great deck!!

I love dragons and I really like this deck.
I like the nice interaction that Hellkite Charger has with Utvara Hellkite, getting that 2nd combat phase will let you get even more Dragon Tokens.
You could consider Balefire Dragon over Steel Hellkite. It costs 1 more mana but I'd say it's worth it.
Also, Xenagos, the Reveler's +1 ability helps you ramp like crazy. It might be better than Domri Rade but that's just my opinion.
Either way, it's an awesome deck, +1 from me!

Maybe a few Dragonspeaker Shamans to help 'ramp' more? They bring out the timmy in me like no other lol. I also have a fun dragon deck in these colors and the shamans really help out (especially in multiples!). Love how you're helping out the next generation of magic players!

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah after extensive play, Balefire Dragon is on my to-get list. I originally thought that the Steel Hellkite's ability to hit non-creatures would be a better choice, but most of the time the Balefire wins out.
I've done a lot of playing with Xenagos, the Reveler, and as much as I like him, he doesn't fit the deck well. Usually the earliest he can come into the field is turn 3, and by then I would rather be dropping dergons all over my opponent's face. Early on his ramp is poor in this deck, and later it's unnecessary. Dat ultimate tho.
And Dragonspeaker Shaman isn't modern legal. It was tempting when I first was building the deck, but it ended up being a trap card. It looks good on paper, and when it works it works, but it telegraphs your next turn and is easily dealt with.

Oh, I was under the impression that this was just a 'for fun' casual deck for your stepson, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned the shamans. Yeah if you want to keep it modern legal then don't add them of course lol.

Oh no worries, it is a fun casual deck, but our LGS runs modern tourneys from time to time, and he likes to run it there. It's not a very competitive environment so he doesn't do too bad with it.

If you're going with a defender sub-theme, what about Axebane Guardian ?
