Sorcery (2)

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms brings us two new planeswalkers: Zariel, Archduke of Avernus and Lolth, Spider Queen. I absolutely loved the campaign book Descent into Avernus when I DM'd it and needed to make a deck when I saw Zariel got her own planeswalker card.

With these two comes all new options and synergy, and what we have here is a Mardu Sacrifice deck utilizing these new planeswalkers.

Strategy

This deck strategizes with taking the opponents creatures and sacrificing said creatures (or our own) for profit. Immersturm Predator, Woe Strider, and Deadly Dispute are all nice sacrifice outlets, while Zariel, Archduke of Avernus gives us devil tokens to sacrifice with her 0(and her +1 which can let us attack quickly and hard when opportunities arise). Lolth, Spider Queen benefits from all of this thanks to her first ability. We're mostly going to use Lolth for her 0 and her -3. That card draw and spider tokens prove very valuable in the long run.

Win Cons

  1. Swing with creatures like Immersturm Predator. Nothing new there.
  2. Drain them with Bastion of Remembrance.
  3. If we manage to get Lolth's -8, hit with an unblockable creature with Access Tunnel, draining them for 8 each turn until they're dead. 16 if we get Zariel's -6 (Although this is a very rare case as we will most likely win or lose before that. A good stall game winner though!).

Substitutions

Price of Loyalty can be replaced with more powerful cards such as Professor Onyx or get more copies of cards already present like Claim the Firstborn or Eyetwitch. Kept it in here because of flavor and the love for taking opponent's creatures.

The land base is like that because those are the cards I have on MTG Arena. Feel free to sub as needed.

Unfortunately this deck isn't Standard 2022 legal, so there hopefully will be better substitutions to make when Midnight Hunt comes out.

Updates Add

Dang, I haven't touched this deck in months since the last Standard rotation but seeing as Explorer is now available in Arena, I thought I would dust it off and see what improvements I can make. And boy, there are some good ones!

Ob Nixilis, the Adversary seems like a very obvious choice. Two planeswalkers for three mana?? Yes please!

Meathook Massacre seemed like an obvious choice and Tenacious Underdog pairs well with Ob Nixilis

The mana base definitely needs an update, so I updated it with the Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow dual lands, which seems appropriate.

Those are it for now, but there are some other considerations should I really need them.
