Any suggestions for my sideboard? Should I bring in cards to protect my combo or should I use my sideboard to change the deck into something entirely different?

This is kinda crazy. It seems like you can get the combo by turn 6 most games, which is soon enough to beat most midrange decks. Targeted discard, control decks, and fast aggro will probably wreck it though. The sideboard seems fairly well-equipped to deal with those things though. I feel like I may just have to try this deck out!

The sideboard is going to be crucial here since there are quite a few things that can foil your plans and not enough wiggle room in the main to cover them all. As I see it, your biggest worries are:
-wrath effects, including cheap ones like Anger of the Gods
-counterspells
-Fast aggro, especially decks that have aggressive synergies (since your interaction is minimal)
-hand disruption
-Stain the Mind out of their side
With that in mind, some good side ideas would be:
-AEtherspouts: easy to ramp into this one-sided wipe against aggro.
-Hornet Nest: Takes on aggro attackers while making some bodies for Descenting.
-Negate: answers so many of your worst matchups that it may be worth mainboarding
You also may consider Monastery Siege over a couple Anticipate in the main to get rid of redundant stuff profitably. The fact that you can play it t2 is pretty gross.
Finally, since Descent is the card you really want (Tempest does nothing without it) and it's harder to dig for, you might also want to try to fit in a couple Hour of Need to give you more consistency, especially since you have Thaumaturge in there.

I do like the idea of Hour of Need, even if it's just 1-2 copies.

Stops plainwlakers and won't give them a blocker if you can't pull off the combo

This deck is awesome! I have been trying to figure out the way to best use Descent of Dragons and you've got it!
I have made a spin off without the green, feel free to check it out :)
Thundering Skies (Descent Combo)
+1 from me, great work

Negate for sure, your combo is very susceptible to countering.

Should I run counterspells main or just in the sideboard?
March 27, 2015 11:40 a.m.
DukeSteele says... #10
I think the answer to that depends on your local meta/playing group. If you play at events with a larger playerbase - like big FNM evens then it might be safe to bring in counterspells on game 2. If you play with the same couple of people every week who will learn the deck fast you may need to protect your boardstate a bit and therefore run the counters mainboard.

Nice nice, i've been playing my deck You're a dragon, you're a dragon, you're a dragon. and i ran into problems with people killing off my goblins. Here you target your rampers, and they dont all die to a Bile Blight or if bounced, still exist? I like it a lot, you've got this.

This isn't a deck I will be playing every week or at a major tournament, so I think I will keep the counterspells in the sideboard for now. I'll only take this to FNM when people don't expect it.
The deck isn't terribly competitive, but it is super fun to play!

Ok, I've played scapeshift for the past year and a half in modern, and I can't find a reason not to play this deck... so thank you... thank you for this deck... I will be forever greatful... (until it rotates out) ;)

So many Options makes this pretty flexible...
I like this A LOT.

I've been brewing this as well. Your list looks good! I've been on Chord for 'turge and Caryatids to prevent blowouts via BB on tokens. Between Ensoul Artifact and this strategy, I might not be able to handle all the salt I get at FNMs from memerangers trying to cast Rhinos at me when they lose on 3 or 4.

BTW, are there any cost efficient ways to lower the amount of Mana Confluences in this deck? I own one and am a bit low in terms of a budget.

I find your inclusion of Commune with the Gods and Taigam's Scheming puzzling. Only there to fuel Dig?
March 31, 2015 12:22 p.m.
Oshawartist says... #18
@Rasta_Viking29 Not only fuel for dig but also to dig themselves. Im playtesting with Taigam's Scheming and it's REALLY good in this form of a deck to get what you need on time, and just throw away what you don't. Commune with the Gods I can only assume is there to search for Dragon Tempests, and if you can't find it then another ramp creature is still good value.
March 31, 2015 12:25 p.m.
Gorgosaurusrex says... #19
Commune with the Gods finds Dragon Tempest, Battlefield Thaumaturge, or a mana dork and is rarely a dead card. Taigam's Scheming is a bit more underwhelming but it fixes draws and both cards fuel dig. I really want to get rid of Taigam's Scheming but then I'd have a hard time casting Dig Through Time.
I'm thinking about playing this deck on game day, even though I know it won't get me anywhere. I just know that people won't be prepared for it!

I'm not sure Dragon Tempest would work since the cards are already on the battlefield. Maybe someone knows for sure, but I don't think turning a creature into a dragon counts as ETB.
March 31, 2015 3:55 p.m.
Laxcougar18 says... #21
Ignore my last comment, I reread the text. The creatures are destroyed and "new" dragons ETB. Sorry.
March 31, 2015 3:56 p.m.
So you want to drop 5 dragons at once and win on the spot?
April 1, 2015 10:13 a.m.
Gorgosaurusrex says... #23
dcarson: That is the main goal of the deck, yes. Or drop 3 dragons (causing 9 damage in etb triggers) and swing for 12 damage in the air (as the dragon tokens have haste).
Can anyone recommend a card to replace Taigam's Scheming? I would really like to find something that fills up the graveyard but also puts a card in my hand. Maybe Satyr Wayfinder? I could lower my land count by 1-2 if I run 3-4 Wayfinder.
April 1, 2015 11:59 a.m.
I play tested a few hands and found that Taigam's Scheming is an all star. It let me toss a lot of lands usually, which is never a bad thing.
April 1, 2015 12:29 p.m.
Gorgosaurusrex says... #25
Yeah I've tried Satyr Wayfinder for a few games and I am really unimpressed. If I'm spending two mana I want to get a card, though. Anticipate and Commune with the Gods have set the bar pretty high, lol.

I made a pretty similar deck on here, extremely fun. Try using Display of Dominance in the sideboard, it's pretty effective against Sultai control right now
