Can you explain your choice of using Wall of Essence over Nyx-Fleece Ram? I ask because I feel Wall of Essence is far better than Nyx-Fleece Ram yet almost everyone runs the Ram over Essence. I understand the Ram can attack if beefed up and he is a 5 on the back, but for the most part both are utilized as blockers who give you life. Granted, Essence needs to block in order for life to be gained whereas the Ram generates a single life every turn, but I feel more life gain is better than 1 per turn.

Vs burn I would pick the Nyx-Fleece Ram because it gains you life whether or not it blocks and it can't be killed by a single Stoke the Flames or Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker. Also the Nyx-Fleece can stand up to Polis Crusher, Ember Swallower, Siege Rhino, and requires an opponent playing Monastery Swiftspear to use either their best single target pump spell Titan's Strength or play multiple spells to still kill a freaking sheep instead of dealing 5 to the face which is huge for control against burn. It eats at their hand even if it's just by one card and stops them from maximizing damage.

Whoops, remove Polis Crusher from that list I forgot about his pro-enchantments _

I personally use Wall of Essence over Ram because of my walkers. If I have a wall out, typically it stops their attacks because they don't want me to gain life. But, as soon as a walker hits the board they go full on assault to try and kill it. This guarantees me the life gain I'm after with the wall, even if it dies in the event. Ram vs. Burn would be smarter, but I really like the idea of Deflecting Palm vs. Burn. It might be just what I need.

Circle of Flame would be a good sideboard choice for token decks/aggro decks. No more Goblin Rabblemaster tokens

See, I don't know if I prefer Circles of Flames over my Drown in Sorrows or not. Drown is a one time use, -2/-2. I'd have to have 2 Circles out to get the same effective damage to creatures, but it's every combat that they're on the field.

How does the deck actually perform? It looks really strong though, and I would love to play it.

I think as far as walkers, Sorin, Solemn Visitor and Liliana Vess have better set ups for you than Chandra, Pyromaster. Your burn isn't too heavy and so her ult won't do too much for you. And since you have no creatures besides token generators, her +1 won't do much for you either (since she is your earliest castable walker). I definitely think Sorin should replace her in the 4 slot. Added 1-2 Liliana will also help you FIND whichever walker you are in need of at the time.

I like Chandra too but as a 4 of that seems a little much is prob put in two Sorin for creature presence and life gain while Chandra helps card draw

Armenius - Still testing this out as it is now! I've gotten some interesting results, but for the most part I'm just learning about how bad I am. Haha.

Ishidar - Sorin would be great if I went a more Midrange approach, but without any creatures in the build besides token generators/my sideboard he's severely limited. I do love him to death though, so I'll consider him. Liliana is nice, but more preferable in a mirror. Dropping her turn 5 instead of a Sarkhan or End Hostilities against a deck putting pressure on me isn't doing what I need it to do. Searching my library is fantastic, yes, but if every card I draw isn't helping me then something is wrong and I need to re-evaluate the deck itself. Also: Chandra is in just for her 0 ability. Her +1 is only for when it's the clearly better option, such as when I use my mana to play an Elspeth that's in hand (which is the primary wincon of the deck). If I hit her ultimate that's fantastic, but not what I'm after.

Jamesfurrow - I'm considering a 1-of Sorin, 3-of Chandra build. I do have 2 Tormenting Voice in the deck to help with draws and 3 Chandras, but 1-of Sorin feels weird. I'll playtest and see what happens.

i would add 2 sorin and take out 2 chandra, you never want 4 planeswalkers of one kind and making 2/2 then pumping team with lifelink is rreally is really good to

Even without creatures, Sorin is good as he can make his own. With that being said, if you do get Elspeth out early, he can net you a pretty piece of lifegain with her tokens as well. Not to mention his ultimate is AMAZING in control decks. I agree with you on Liliana's cost bracket in your deck though. She is probably a 1-of if that.

put in untapped lands like m15 lands and tkae out scry lands

November 14, 2014 6:39 p.m.

Doomerrant says... #14

MTGPlus - The scry lands allow me to, consistently, see what's coming next. This is a pretty basic essential for a control deck. I'd agree if it were an aggro.

Blashemer Okay, but it will be harder to respond to other players actions. They can get weenie creatures out early and then drop a bomb on you when your lands are tapped. It might help if it you take out 2 Temple of Silences for 2 Caves of Koilos and two Temple of Triumphs for 2 Battlefield Forges. Just A Suggestion you could alwats keep temples in sideboard

Ajani is in the SB for the very effect that Chain Veil gives, except I can use his ability the turn he drops. Plus I'm not keen on having something continuously Shock me if I can't get a walker on the field for a while (which happens often in this standard). Thanks, though.

Sorry, shouldn't have said "very effect". It's a similar effect in that I can increase their loyalty counters. Still not in love with it, though.

i would drop one end hostilities and run a 3rd anger in the main given the abundance of token strategies currently seeing play

Armenius says... #22

Just swapping the 4th End Hostilities for a sideboard Anger of the Gods seems quite good, seeing as the amount of tokens, Mono-Red, Whips decks (REALLY effectively kills Hornet Queen and the like.

I hadn't been playing MTG for a while, and I'm still not in the full swing of things quite yet, but token strategies are a thing now? Good meta-call. Hopefully these aren't plaguing MTGO too much.

Jeskai Tokens are extremely popular right now. Other Mardu based strategies are also using 4 copies of Hordeling Outburst, as well as Rabble Red. Anger of the Gods also does work on that deck, as well as Heroic Red.

Another set of popular decks are Whip of Erebos decks, which have access to a potential turn 4 Hornet Queen, though it's usually later. But still, Anger exiles the Queen and all her minions, so Whip is very ineffective after that.

EnderSlayer13 says... #25

With the release of Monastery Mentor, the Jeskai Tokens decks have sky rocked. Anger of the Gods is a good play, so is Bile Blight and Drown in Sorrow. The last two would be good on the sideboard.
