My modern take on Mono Black Devotion.

Phyrexian Obliterator pretty much shuts down aggro decks that can't answer it (In particular he hates RDW).

Deathrite Shaman, is, well, Deathrite Shaman.

Phyrexian Arena boosts our devotion while feeding us card advantage.

The discard twins Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize for built-in protection and disruption.

Gatekeeper of Malakir and the edicts Devour Flesh and Geth's Verdict keep creatures at a minimum.

Fulminator Mage punishes greedy decks (looking at you, Tron).

And what black deck featuring edicts and discard spells doesn't love its Liliana of the Veil? I'll happily take 3.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel and a singleton Griselbrand are our gamebreakers.

Geth's Verdict and Abrupt Decay round out our mainboard removal suite.

Side Tech

Sadistic Sacrament helps to remove troublesome win cons.

Maelstrom Pulse because, permanents.

An extra Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek to go with Surgical Extraction, very good vs. combo.

Deathmark to help remove things like Tarmogoyf and slow down white weenie and elf decks.

Pithing Needle for decks relying on activated abilities. Great against Planeswalkers and manlands.

Sword of Light and Shadow to help give us a little resiliency towards B/W.
